About Our Shrimp
Motor City Sea Farm shrimp are only sold fresh, whole by the pound with heads on. No chemicals, antibiotics, hormones or colorings are necessary to enhance the product, and our shrimp is much more flavorful than shrimp from the grocery store. You can feel good about eating our product because it is sustainably grown and does not destroy natural ecosystems, like the shrimp found in grocery stores.
We start off with 12-day old Pacific White Shrimp(Litopenaeus vannamei) which we get from a hatchery in Florida. We raise the baby shrimp for 30 days in small nursery tanks. We then add them to one of our twelve 4,500 gallon tanks for another 120 days. The tanks are filled with sparkling Lake Huron water, treated by our own local Detroit Water and Sewage Department, straight from the tap that you get your drinking water from. We let it settle for a few days and aerate it to remove the chlorine. After that, we add aquarium salt and that's it. The shrimp are fed a high protein pellet food daily. Again, no hormones, no chemicals or antibiotics. Wait until you taste the difference!
Our type of system is called a recirculating aquaculture system(RAS). It is a waste free system. We don't dump our water, but constantly reuse it. The only water we add to the system replaces evaporation. As the water in our system "ages", good bacteria grow and the shrimp flourish in our "bio-floc" heterotrophic system. The water is constantly oxygenated and tested nine different ways daily to ensure the proper quality. Like good wine, as the water "ages", it improves and sustains the survivability of the shrimp. Our shrimp are harvested after four or five months of growth. The average size is 18-24 count per pound. Motor City Sea Farm sells their shrimp at their farm location, 10090 W. Chicago, Detroit and at local farm markets.
