Keep your fur babies safe during these cold temps in the northland. Predators will not distinguish between wild prey and livestock or pets. They don’t care if it’s your prize winning horse, dog, or cow. All the predators see is food in their empty bellies. It is a reality out there, but remember they’re just trying to survive as well and should not be condemned for acting out as their true nature dictates. I’m very saddened as a vet tech to see this horse was attacked by a wolf, but I’m also happy it has survived and will potentially be ok.

Here at Aspen Ridge we have 12 horses and a pony. During the cold weather days where there’s wind chill warnings of -30 to -40 degrees the horses are not able to go outside. So the daily routine consists of feeding their grain and hay in their stalls, then for cleaning groups of 2-3 go out in the arena to stretch their legs and there is a large water bucket placed in there so they can have a drink while they run around a bucking and a farting. This process can take several hours as we like to make sure they are out for at least 1/2 hour to stretch their legs and aren’t standing around developing joint issues. When put back in their stalls they get a little snack of hay. At dinner time they get their grain and hay again and about an hour after that they get water buckets brought to them individually, which can take about an hour in itself, and they get to drink as much as they want. If they don’t drink, they get water offered to them a couple of hours later and then it’s bedtime. If the weather permits during the day(sunny and wind chills no more than -20), they get the chance to go out for at least a couple of hours while stalls are cleaned and then brought back in to ensure that they don’t get frostbite but get to really stretch their legs.

All of this care takes a lot of time and energy, but it’s what is necessary to these horses to ensure they’re well taken care of and they don’t develop any joint issues or other problems. It’s what good horse people do. 😊

As many of you know, Anne had been diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year and had to stop instructing for a short period of time. She has since been recovering from her treatment and is back to giving lessons. While she’s been having good and bad days, she’s quite happy to be able to make it out to the arena and be that amazing instructor that she is on those good days.

Please take a moment to welcome her back and say a few things about what you like about her instructing.

Say hi to Nova! Freshly groomed and happy to do pony and me lessons. Nova is 1/2 Welsh and 1/2 Shetland pony who loves kids and teaching them how to be around horses and to ride. She will find treats in your pocket and beg for them until you give in. She’s one of the sweetest ponies I know and gives me kisses every morning before turn out. Her personality is unique and I don’t think you’d find another pony like her around who loves people as much as she does.

Welcome to the herd Nina! She’s been here for about 2 weeks now and is adjusting quite well. She’s a beautiful young lady who is curious and just wants to make friends. The snow was a little shock to her, but she had fun rolling in it and running around her paddock a bit in it.
