Had a great session with Nola yesterday! After working her in a public setting with people, dogs and cars around without issue, we talked about muzzle training. I had given the owner some homework to see if she could get the muzzle on the dog using the typical approach of conditioning it with food. It didn’t go well…

I had figured this would be the case so we took an entirely different approach. I played a bit with her and then eventually put the ball in my pocket, took the muzzle out and tried to put it on her. She wanted nothing to do with it and dodged every attempt so I told her “no” and that was the end of it… I could then slip the muzzle right on!

I would not be able to do this with any dog off the street. I relied on everything I had built with the dog up until this point. The dog trusted me and knew I would not let her down! The secret is as simple as building trust!

As we were packing up to head home something amazing happened. I picked up the muzzle to hand off to the owner and Nola ran over to me. She sat before me and put her head up high. She actually wanted me to put the muzzle on her! I put it on her one last time and of course gave her as much praise as I could possibly give. Moments like these are what I love about dog training!

Some video of me working Jerry the other day! Everything is very calculated in this video. It’s not just playing with the dog but actually providing information in a way they understand and can learn.

Jerry froze up the first time I taught him to down with a leash pop. He was terrified because he didn’t understand that he can overcome it. We worked through that together. He still does not like when I pop the leash and that is intentional. We have genetic programing to avoid something bad and go towards things that are good. If you don’t know how to tap into this programming correctly the dog will suffer.

Another session at the field with my dogs. I am not the trainer that makes dogs place and be in a down stay for an hour. I like for my dogs to understand how to actually make decisions in the real world. If they are constantly having to follow a command you are giving to them, they cannot be learning how to behave when out of command and free.

This is the first time doing down stays in at least 6 months. It’s not something that needs to be trained all the time if you understand how to teach it correctly. Something else that should be noted is the amount of time I spend playing with the dog vs the amount of time I am asking them to do something. Until the dog loves to perform the command itself the reward phase needs to be much longer or eventually the motivation will phase out.

I want to start uploading longer videos to show people what a typical training session looks like when I take my dogs out. Most often I am not focusing my time on obedience because I know it’s only good if my dog has motivation.

To get proper motivation you have to able to put the dogs needs first. Proper motivation is not achieved by force. I take the e collar off Duke about halfway through the video to show this. He also didn’t initially play ball with me and I do not force him to play. I gave him time and he eventually opens up. If you are interested in 15 minutes of a regular session with Duke check out the link below…

Some key takeaways from this video - Duke would not play with me at first. I didn’t rush it and force him to play. Dogs will play when they are not n...

Grey is coming along nicely! Still haven’t given the dog any food at all. Just tapping into what he loves to do most. Such a cool dog!

It might not seem like much but to have a 4 month old dog willingly choose to bring the ball back rather than go see the random dog is a big deal! The future is bright for this guy 🙌🏻

Really happy with Lola’s understanding of play! Apparently she didn’t know that humans could bark 😂

Being able to communicate to your dogs what they “cannot” do is just as important as having them understand what they “can” do. Without the full picture, there is a lack of clarity and understanding that can lead you down a path of frustration and conflict.

Off leash training at the park today!

✨Duke and Maizy both started out as nervous pups but through structured play and training they both learned to be calm and follow commands in stressful situations. Send me a message so I can help your dog do the same!

Lola is out of control and it is great! All this energy can be channeled to create a dog that will choose to engage with their owner over anything else! Eventually we add rules and obedience to create the ultimate dog that will not only comply but WANTS to comply! The power of play is real! 🙌🏻

Love these dogs ❤️

I think it’s fair to say this excited golden was a bit out of control 😂 Instead of addressing every issue head on, I took a step back and found out why he was acting out. Through play he was given the outlet he needed and he was given a purpose! Punishment and reinforcement can only get you so far…

Beds don’t create aggression and dominance. People do! My goal is not to create a soldier. Teach them to express themselves, give them a purpose, and make them as happy as possible and you would be amazed at what these animals will do for you

I believe dogs should be as free as possible! Free to sniff, play, and learn how to behave properly in a human world by learning from their mistakes. Even with all this freedom my dogs willingly choose to play and be with me over everything else! This is when you have true control 🙌🏻

Focus on what your dog loves and just sprinkle in the obedience

Dukes favorite game!

Niko has got some major issues with dogs and has not made a friend besides the one dog he lives with at home. He couldn’t be walked anywhere near dogs so this alone is a step in the right direction. Soon he will be playing with dogs and having fun!

The key to dog training is building a relationship with your pup and creating a dog that wants to spend time with you 💪🏻
