Summer is a great time to explore the outdoors and…. it can get hot. Like us, pets are susceptible to dehydration and heatstroke, so we need to help them stay safe and cool when the temperature is rising.

Protect your pet from dehydration and heatstroke by ensuring they have constant access to fresh clean water and ample shade, never leaving them in parked vehicles or any enclosed space without proper ventilation, protecting their paws from hot pavement, and limiting exercise when the temps or humidity are high.

* Heatstroke is an emergency that requires medical intervention as soon as possible! *

Signs of heatstroke in pets can include:
- Dehydration: Vomiting and/or diarrhea; dry, sticky gums; excessive panting; loss of skin elasticity.
- High heart rate.
- Body temperature over 104 degrees.
- Collapses or seizures.

* If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, follow these steps and call us (or an emergency vet) immediately at (610) 635-1100. *

1. Move them to a cool, shaded area.
2. Pour cool (not cold) water over their body or use a wet towel to cool them down.
3. Provide fresh, cold water.

We hope this information helps you and your pet(s) enjoy a safe, fun, and “cool” summer!

Sincerely,

Creature Comforts Veterinary Hospital

Two bonded orange males looking for a home!

Chubby Buddy “Chubbs” (top) 8 yo. Tiger (bottom) 7yo. Both neutered males. Indoor only. They eat urinary food because one of them had crystals. Not up to date in vaccines. Both are friendly, but Tiger is a bit shy at first.

Some tips for you and your pets tomorrow:

Stay calm: Animals are sensitive to human emotions and actions, so remaining composed is important, according to the Usdan Institute.

Keep pets indoors: Crowds, noise and commotion could be stressors for animals, and increased traffic pose a higher risk for accidents and trauma. For these reasons, Paradowski recommended not taking pets to eclipse viewing events.

Maintain a calm environment: Keep lights on and play soothing music to help facilitate a comforting atmosphere. Additionally, a favorite snack can be given to a pet motivated by food, while physical touch such as petting may help others.

Maintain routines: Adhering to regular schedules facilitates senses of normalcy and comfort, which help to mitigate stress or anxiety while an unfamiliar event is occurring.

Check identification: Ensure pets are microchipped and wearing collars with ID tags. Should they become fearful and run off, this precaution may prove invaluable, according to the Usdan Institute.

This is what the face of regret looks like.

Cooper had a fun time eating Cadbury Creme Eggs and Lindt chocolate bunnies... That was followed up by being made to vomit up the chocolate and foil wrappers, and finally topped off with being fed several large syringes of activated charcoal (to bind the toxins). Cooper's mom said we could post this to remind everyone about the dangers of dogs eating chocolate.

Hope your Easter was better than Cooper's!

03/18/2024

While we usually associate pesky parasites with the summertime, did you know that flea/tick prevention is recommended for pets year-round? Mosquitos (spreaders of heartworm disease) and ticks are also active in the fall and winter months when many of us don’t think they are an issue because of cold temperatures.

The best way to protect your pet and avoid suffering or discomfort from parasite-causing diseases and infections, is with vaccines and medications including:

Flea/tick control: Keep fleas and ticks off your pet, and out of your home. These parasites are not just cause for itchiness, but they can transmit serious diseases to you and your pets. Some flea and tick medicines also protect from heartworm disease: Heartworm infection can be deadly, and the treatment can be very costly, and painful for your pet. Heartworm disease is present in geographic regions throughout the United States, and it is recommended that dogs receive preventive year-round medication, regardless of the climate. Bonus: many heartworm preventives also work as a dewormer in case your pet is exposed to gastrointestinal parasites.  Lyme Borreliosis vaccination: Tick bites can lead to pain-causing Lyme disease. Vaccination + booster for Lyme borreliosis, combined with a monthly flea and tick control medication, should be considered for dogs that live within, or travel to, regions with emerging or endemic Lyme disease. (To find out if Lyme disease is a concern in your area, view the prevalence maps on the Companion Animal Parasite Council website.)
https://capcvet.org/maps/ #/2022/all-year/lyme-disease/dog/united-states

Schedule an appointment with us at (610) 635-1100 and we can help determine which parasite protection plan is best for your pets or provide treatment if you are concerned they may already be infected.

Today, we saw one pet with a tick, one pet with fleas, and one pet with tapeworms (which come from fleas). It is not cold enough to stop flea and tick meds and last year it never got cold enough. Two of these pets were "indoor-only" cats. Fleas can sneak in through cracks in the windows, or on rodents, or on your dog. Use flea/ Tick meds on dogs and cats all year!

Happy Hannukah! Hanukkah sameach!
May this festival of lights bring you and yours warmth and joy!

At CCVH, we use an electric menorah to protect our pet friends. We're also careful to keep them away from chocolate gelt (and wrappers), latkes (and other fried foods), small dreidels, and gift ribbon. A safe Hannukah is a very happy Hannukah!
