🌟 Let's Give a Big shout-out to the DPW and East Providence Public Works! 🙌🚧

Two things are for certain:

😤 Grumpy people will complain about the roads no matter how good you do!

🍟🍺 At The Local, you get a free small bite item and draft beer (after the shift) every time it snows!

🛣️ Your hard work and tireless efforts are what keep our city moving safely.

Have you noticed the beautiful new sign welcoming travellers to Watchemoket Square. This new sign is located at the base of the exit to Warren Ave from route 195 east and at the gateway to Watchemoket.

This simple sign is an example of how projects in the city take time, planning and coordination.

Timeline for the Watchemoket sign:

2017: City applied for $75,000 in grant funds through Commerce RI’s Main Street Streetscape Enhancement program. Three projects are approved, one of them being the creation of a large sign to let people coming off the highway know they are in Watchemoket, in East Providence.

2019-2020: The first two projects nearing completion, the Beta Group is brought in to assist with placemaking for Watchemoket.

2021: Beta Group presents a 104 page report detailing placemaking efforts for Watchemoket.

November 2021: Director Bill Fazioli approaches Melissa Spurr to submit a design for the Watchemoket sign.

January 2022: Design concepts submitted to Bill Fazioli to review. Design is approved.

March 2022: The City seeks permission from the Federal Highway Administration to erect a sign on State land.

May 2022: Federal Highway Administration grants permission. City applies for Physical Alteration permit from RIDOT.

June 2022: Providence Painted Signs selected to fabricate the sign.

September 2022: Sign is completed and delivered to the City and stored until RIDOT permit is approved.

Summer 2023: RIDOT approves the permit. Planning meets with Highway and City engineers to plan mounting the sign. Highway department states that September would be the ideal time to install the sign.

September 2023: East Providence Highway Department installs the sign.
