We are sharing this to inform, not to cause panic.
The influenza vaccine helps protect dogs and lessen the severity and duration of symptoms. High traffic areas (boarding facilities, groomers, dog parks) are higher risk, but these are not the only places where influenza can be contracted.
If your dog is coughing, or has been to a kennel and/or grooming facility PLEASE let us know before entering the building. We have protocols in place with the intention to keep everyone's dogs as healthy as possible by minimizing potential spread.

Thanksgiving is Thursday! We are open Wednesday, Closed Thursday, and open Friday & Saturday.
While we want our furry friends to be part of the festivities, we need to be careful about what foods we give them. This Kong recipe is a safe, easy way to keep your dog preoccupied while you eat your Thanksgiving meal.
If you are going elsewhere for Thanksgiving, never feed pets anything unless their owner is okay with it! Some pets stomachs are more sensitive than others, some pets have allergies, and some are on a strict diet.
If your pet does ingest something they should not have, these resources are available to help determine if your pet should be seen at an emergency hospital immediately.

It's Practice Manager Appreciation Week!
Jennifer started as a technician here in 1998 and has been an essential part of CAH since then.
Along with everything she does as practice manager, she continues to work as a technician & jumps in to help wherever needed.
She does many things (including a lot of behind the scenes work) to keep the hospital running smoothly.
She has definitely earned the title of "Chaos Coordinator" with her amazing multitasking skills. We don't know what we'd do without her!

Dental health is an important part of our pet's overall health.
The first picture shows how much of the tooth is visible above the gum line, the next shows how much of the tooth is below the gum line (where we cannot see.) This is why dental x rays are so important! Dental disease and changes to the bone can happen with little outward visible signs. Plaque & tartar build up can lead to gum recession and bone recession if not addressed.
This tooth was extracted from a German Shepherd Dog.

Rock Hudson was so comfortable in his bed, he stayed in it while Dr. Teri White looked him over. The only time he left it was when he was put on the scale.

Inflatable collars can be a good alternative to an E Collar (the plastic "cone of shame") after some surgeries, but not all. If your pet is in for a procedure and may need something to keep them from reaching their surgery site, ask if this may be an alternative!

October is Pet Obesity Awareness Month. While no one enjoys getting on the scale, it's an important thing to keep track of! Do your pets fall in the green part of the scale or closer to the red? Weight loss needs to be achieved gradually over time, we do not want pets to lose weight too quickly.

This week we celebrate our techs for everything they do!
They are x ray technicians, phlebotomists, pharmacy techs, kennel attendants, surgery technicians, pooper scoopers, all around multi taskers!
They are here to help provide the best care possible to your pets.

This week they were provided lunch by Merck, and Jenn set up a hot chocolate station, brought breakfast from Chic-fila, as well as a popcorn station and goodie bags!

When you bring your pet in for any kind of surgery we ask important questions before starting.
Would you like pre-anesthetic bloodwork? This is always recommended, it checks a complete blood count which may indicate anemia, infection, and immune system response. Chemistry tests check kidney and liver functions.
We want to make sure your pet is eating and drinking like they normally do, and that they don’t have an upset stomach (no vomiting or diarrhea.)
If you have any worries or concerns, relay them to our receptionists or surgery technicians when they come to get your pet for surgery. We all want to be on the same page before proceeding!

September is Pain Awareness Month! Pets are good at hiding their pain, especially chronic pain, so it is important to watch for subtle changes like the ones shown below. Some animals may become less active as they get older, but sometimes it's because they are in pain. If you are seeing changes like these from your pets, talk to our doctors about pain management options we have available to help keep your pet comfortable.

Dr. Joe Nizolek is retiring after practicing veterinary medicine for over four decades. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, his red van was frequently seen on the country roads from Centerville to Greensboro to Church Creek as he tended to horses, cows and a variety of livestock on the farms of several counties. Since 2020, Joe has spent most of his time at the Community Animal Hospital treating dogs and cats. He is known for being excellent at orthopedics and for being a remarkable diagnostician.

Dr. Joe and his family were the architects, construction managers, tradesmen, and landscapers in 1984 when the first edition of the Community Animal Hospital was created from a little brick ranch house. He guided the expansion of the Hospital in 2000 and spent the next twenty-three years making sure that the building, the equipment, and the grounds were immaculate and in perfect repair. He and his wife, Dr. Donna, thought of the Hospital as their third “child.”

His skills as a doctor, his ability to communicate with people from all walks of life , and his humor will be missed! So many clients over the years asked him, “Can you be my doctor??” He will now be enjoying life at his own pace. Joe will have more time to spend in New Jersey fishing on the family boat with his brother. We wish him the very best after a long and rewarding career.

Approximately 80% of orange cats are male. This is due to the genes needed to be carried by the parents to produce the orange color in offspring.
