This is pretty much what my stallion and I use to do. We would call it a game, and he loved it. It was never hard to get his attention even if there were mares around. We had our own bond!!! I miss my son!♡

For three weeks, horses at stables in Hertford, North Carolina, have been getting sick.

New Hope Stables has turned into a makeshift medical ward as horses kept there have been struck with a mystery illness.

I want to begin by apologizing for not providing you with an update sooner. I just couldn’t bring myself to write, “We still don’t know what is wrong with our babies.” In the last 48 hours we have learned a lot about what it is not. The horses have tested negative for Coronavirus, Cryptosporidiosis, Clostridium and Salmonella. The necropsy on Fancy’s body has not yet determined her cause of death.

Preliminary test on the food have come back negative. We will continue to feed an alternate food till all testing is complete. Testing on the water has not come back yet. We have had an alternate source of water brought in until we are sure the water is safe.

All of our babies continue to fight hard. The past two days have been touch and go for Stormy. Twice we have almost lost him. Thanks to the dedication and extreme measures of Dr. Shanna he is still here to fight today. He currently remains in critical condition.

Rippy also remains in critical condition. He has been receiving IVs the longest. His ups are finally beginning to outnumber the downs.

Sadly yesterday Trooper and Empire’s conditions were downgraded to critical. They are both receiving IVs today.

Sunny seems to be doing well but the girls are keeping a close eye on him.

Charm and Autumn are still under observation at NC State. Yesterday was a scary day for Charm. Saturday morning he was facing surgery. By the evening both horses were stable and surgery is off the table for now. Today’s reports leave us hopeful that they are both getting better.

On Saturday Cappy started showing signs of dehydration. He was given an IV and by evening was looking better.

Chillie is being released from NC State today. At this time he will not be returning to the barn until we find out exactly what we are dealing with.

Sammi has been very stressed and may have developed ulcers. She is being watched closely.

Parker, Sassy, and Copper all are doing well but we are watching them for any signs that could cause them to not feel well.

The only constant in my life this week has been my 4:30am cup of coffee with my husband in the parking lot. I haven’t been home since Sunday when Koda fell ill. I cannot put into words how proud I am of my students and their parents for their love and dedication to our horses. They have sat diligently outside the stalls of each horse documenting every little detail about their day. The stress this has put on all of us is overwhelming at times. We are all tired, especially our horses. When one of them just wants to lay down and take a nap we all immediately jump up to check on them. I want to take a minute to personally thank our Vet, Shanna’s ’s for her dedication to saving our babies. She has been here, day in and day out, caring for our sweet babies like they are her own. We will never be able to thank her for all the hours she has put in this week. I never thought the day would come when the barn would look more like a hospital than a barn.

I hope tomorrow’s update brings continued improvement and more answers. Please continue to lift our entire barn family up in your prayers.

Tonight I find myself struggling to find the words to write this update. Today has been an extremely sad day at New Hope Stables. Heaven has gained three more beautiful horses today. Not long after my last update Fancy took a turn for the worse. The emergency vet was called to come to the barn. While waiting for the vet to arrive we were contacted by the veterinary clinic about Koda. His condition had also taken a turn for the worse and they felt there was no longer anything they could do for him. The decision was made to end their suffering early this morning. Our Sweet Dixie has fought hard all day. She had a hard night but by morning was beginning to show signs of improvement. She received medicines throughout the day and continue to show slight improvements but by evening her condition quickly began to decline. Surrounded by many who loved her she was peacefully laid to rest a few hours ago.

All of the remaining horses have been seen by the vet off and on all day. At this time we currently have Autumn, Sunny and Rippy under close observation.

As this day comes to an end we still have no answers. What we do have is a army of people from numerous places looking for the answers.Fancy’s body was transported to NC State’s Infectious Disease Center for extensive testing in hopes of finding answer to save the remaining herd. Chillie has also been transported to NC State for observation.

We were able to bring home the body of our beloved Koda late this evening, where he was laid to rest surrounded by those that loved him.

Thank you once again for your overwhelming support. We pray that tomorrow brings answers.
Please continue to share our story and our GoFundMe Page. We will update you again tomorrow.

Interesting 🤔

Mares aren’t always well liked and for the same reasons strong women aren’t.

Opinionated? Those opinions are not without good cause and maybe you can't figure them out or maybe you just don’t like her opinion of you. Change it and she will always be on your side.

Stubborn? She just won’t let you bulldoze her. Treat her with respect and her resilience will be an asset to you.

Difficult? You just can’t handle her. You don’t have what it takes.

Stick with geldings then, and leave the mare for someone who understands her and appreciates the same qualities society has subtlety taught you not to like.

Here’s to mares, to strong women, and to those who CAN and DO appreciate them!

Mr. Eugene Carter, 93, was the last person to sit on Man O’ War, and proud of it. He died, yesterday, at the Kentucky Horse Park, doing what he said he always wanted to be doing. “Being with horses. Everyday. That’s what I all wanted to do. Horses have been my life,” he said. “As long as I’ve got breath, I’ll be coming out here to be with them.”
I bet they have Big Red saddled up and ready to run! Have a great ride.
