National Dog Anxiety Awareness Week 🐾

Here at Indian River Animal Clinic, we pride ourselves on being as fear-free as possible. That means we rely heavily on positive words of encouragement, lots of snacks, and medication to keep our pets as comfortable as possible throughout their entire appointment process. ❤️

If your pup is fearful or anxious for their appointment, we will try to keep them calm with a slow, less-is-more approach. If that doesn't work for your pet, we may send you home with some anti-anxiety medications to try before the next appointment to keep your pet relaxed and confident in their next visit. 🐾

If you have any questions or concerns about scheduling your fearful fur-baby, give us a call and we would be happy to discuss accommodations for your pet. 👩🏻‍⚕️

Over one million pets in the United States have Heartworm Disease. While most pet owners wouldn't knowingly put their pet at risk of becoming infected with a potentially deadly disease, millions fail to protect their dog or cat from heartworm infection.

Heartworm is a life-threatening parasite that is transmitted by mosquitoes in 49 different states, it is caused by worms infesting the heart and lungs after a pet is bitten by an infected mosquito. Pets of any age and breed are susceptible to infection.

While treatment for heartworm disease is possible, it is a complicated and expensive process. In some instances the disease is fatal, particularly in cats.

There are a variety of options for the prevention of heartworm infection in dogs, including an injectable that provides protection for six months as well as monthly chewables. For cats there are topical solutions.

All of these methods are extremely effective, and when administered properly on a timely schedule, heartworm infection can be completely prevented.

It is important to realize that even pets that are exclusively indoor pets, may still be at risk due to mosquitoes entering the home.

May is National "Chip your Pet Month"! 🐾

Each year, about 10 million pets are lost in America, with millions ending up in animal shelters. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats in these shelters without microchips are reunited with their owners. 😭

The goal of "Chip Your Pet Month" is to encourage pet owners to microchip their animals so that they can be quickly found and brought back to their owners if they go missing. 🐾

Unsure if your pet is microchipped or if the information is up to date?

A little bit about dentals! 🦷 🐶 🐱

Proper dental care will help keep your pet from developing a wide variety of dental health issues, such as periodontal disease, which is caused by the build-up of bacteria in the mouth. 🐕

Signs that you might need to schedule a dog teeth cleaning include:
* Bad breath
* Discolored teeth
* Drooling
* Loose or missing teeth
* Poor appetite

During the cleaning itself, your vet or a trained veterinary technician will scale all surfaces of your pet’s teeth to remove plaque and tartar. The area underneath the gum line also will be cleaned, which is necessary to reduce gum inflammation. 🦷

Once your dog’s teeth have been scaled, they will be polished to make it more difficult for plaque to redevelop. Dental X-rays are taken to assess the health of structures, like tooth roots, that aren’t visible. Other procedures might be necessary depending on the health of your pet’s mouth.🐾

To reduce the amount of tartar buildup in between dental cleanings, you can brush your pets teeth with pet safe toothpaste! 🪥

We take this month to consult with our veterinarians about arthritis diagnosis and options for our fur-babies, as 1 in every 5 pets suffer from arthritis. 😢

If you have an older pet who is having a harder time getting up and down or taking long walks, they could be suffering from arthritis. This disease can affect the legs, hips, back, and more—making everyday movements painful.

Signs of arthritis :
* Difficulty or reluctance to stand from a lying position
* Difficulty going up stairs or jumping onto a bed or couch
* Taking a narrow stance in the rear limbs
* Wasting away of muscles in the rear limbs

Lots of people struggle with allergies this time of year—but it’s not just people who suffer. 🤒

Grass, dust, pollen and other environmental allergens affect many pets as well. 🌳

Symptoms of allergies in pets are like our own: coughing, sneezing, and watery, itchy eyes. Pets may also start licking and chewing themselves excessively as skin irritation is a very common symptom, they can also experience allergies as recurring ear infections, a**l gland issues, or hair loss. 🐾

If your pet has environmental allergies, your Indian River veterinarian might suggest allergy injections or daily tablets, medicated shampoos, antibiotics, and more. 👩🏻‍⚕️

Vaccinations are an important part of preventive healthcare for your pet and one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your pet's health, increase longevity, and quality of life. ❤️
Vaccinations also serve a crucial public health function by forming a barrier against several diseases that can be passed from animals to humans.👩🏻‍⚕️

💉🐾Which vaccines should you get for your pet? 💉🐾

Rabies
Rabies is a communicable disease between dogs, cats, people, and wild animals. Vaccinating all dogs and cats for Rabies is not only important for the health of the entire family, but also required by law.

Distemper/Parvo
The canine distemper combination vaccine is given to protect dogs from highly contagious upper respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases.

Leptospirosis
The canine Leptospirosis vaccine is typically given in combination with the Distemper/Parvo combination. This virus is transmitted to dogs through water sources contaminated by the urine of wild animals such as raccoons.

Bordetella
This vaccine protects dogs from kennel cough, and is recommended for dogs that frequent the groomer, dog parks, community/social events, boarding kennels, and doggie daycares.

Canine Influenza
Canine Influenza is a contagious upper respiratory infection. Several strains of Influenza outbreaks have occured across the country, including Central Florida. This virus can lead to serious health concerns such as pneumonia and even death.

Feline Distemper
The feline distemper combination vaccination protects cats from contagious upper respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases.

Feline Leukemia
Feline Leukemia is a highly contagious and life-threatening virus transmitted between cats. There is no cure for this virus and vaccination is the best protection for your kitty. Cats should test negative for the Feline Leukemia virus before administering the vaccination.

Lyme
Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks. It is prevalent in many Southeastern states, and more cases are reported in Florida every year.
