Thoroughbred aftercare is a vast, multi-faceted industry that includes players in both the non-profit and business spaces. Track-based rehoming programs provide a crucial service in the industry, networking horses from their racing connections to organizations, businesses and individuals who can transition those horses into careers beyond racing. These programs may be based at individual tracks, or work on a state or jurisdiction level.
Track-based rehoming programs each work on a unique model that fits the particular environment in which they operate, but generally function as non-profit organizations. They may be funded entirely on donations, but also may be funded by mandatory takeouts or pledges. Some organizations work entirely with accredited non-profit aftercare organizations while others network with businesses or individuals to provide transitional care and training.
The Retired Racehorse Project is uniquely placed as the only organization that works with all branches of Thoroughbred aftercare to increase demand for Thoroughbreds beyond racing. Learn more about the landscape of aftercare at https://bit.ly/44V2IwM
The RRP's Impact: Horse Listings
The Retired Racehorse Project's impact goes far beyond the Thoroughbred Makeover. While we're best known for the world's largest and most lucrative retraining competition for recently-retired racehorses, we offer additional services, events and opportunities to help more Thoroughbreds find careers beyond racing. Our Thoroughbred-exclusive horse listings are one of those critical services, offering both the racing and equestrian industries an outlet to connect their horses with their next owners.
Since the relaunch of our improved website in 2022, 383 horses have come through the RRP Horse Listings, including our open listings as well as the Makeover Marketplace. The listings are free to user both as a buyer/adopter and seller, with additional upgrades available to enhance listings. This is the only listing service dedicated exclusively to Thoroughbreds. Thoroughbred aftercare is a vast, multi-faceted industry that includes players in both the non-profit and business spaces. Sanctuary organizations are an important part of that industry, providing a retirement outlet for horses that may not be able to go on to sport or recreational careers after racing for any number of reasons.
Sanctuary organizations provide lifetime care for horses, and typically do not offer their horses for adoption or rehoming. Some of these organizations may also offer therapeutic, training or other equine-assisted programs in which horses do not need to be ridden. Sanctuary organizations provide a critical service for former racehorses who otherwise might be difficult to place in appropriate homes due to athletic limitations.
The Retired Racehorse Project is uniquely placed as the only organization that works with all branches of Thoroughbred aftercare to increase demand for Thoroughbreds beyond racing. Learn more about our work and support our mission at https://bit.ly/3xnWbOD.
Our banner event, the Thoroughbred Makeover, has directly impacted 4,710 horses that have been registered for the competition since its inception in 2013.
Horses registered for the Thoroughbred Makeover receive the benefit of trainers' participation, including the support network and educational resources of the Retired Racehorse Project and the community of other participating trainers. These resources help build a successful foundation that focuses not just on training for a sport discipline, but attention to care, nutrition and physical well-being in that critical first year of transition to a career beyond racing.

The Thoroughbred aftercare industry consists of many different branches approaching the challenge of finding outlets for horses exiting racing in unique and varied ways. There is no single approach that offers a single solution. Thoroughbred aftercare takes the combined and cooperative efforts of ALL of these entities for the benefit of the horse: sanctuary, non-profit facilities, track-based programs, listing agents, resellers, and incentive/advocacy/education programs.
The Retired Racehorse Project is uniquely placed as the only organization that works with all of these branches of Thoroughbred aftercare to increase demand for Thoroughbreds beyond racing. Learn more about our work and support our mission at TheRRP.org.

#TBMakeover: Brooke's Appeal & Palace Two Step
The 2023 pilot program for Former Broodmares, sponsored by Claiborne Farm, saw some of our most enthusiastic trainers embracing the unique challenges of preparing a former broodmare for the Makeover. Meet Teresa Pilegaard, trainer of Brooke's Appeal, and Jennifer Lee, trainer of Palace Two Step, in this video from the 2023 #TBMakeover!
#TBMakeover: Makeover Siblings
OTTB enthusiasts seek out particular types of horses for all sorts of reasons, but increasingly, more emphasis is being placed on breeding and how particular lines originally bred for racing might perform in disciplines of sport riding as well. Hear more from Makeover veteran Samantha Fawcett on why she sought out a particular horse for this year's event -- and life beyond!
#TBMakeover: Claiborne Farm & the Broodmare Division Pilot Program
2023 marks the first year that we have taken a foray into a broodmare division. The pilot program for this year is generously sponsored by Claiborne Farm, and we were honored to have Claiborne's Mary Ormsby come out to the Thoroughbred Makeover this week to meet some of the competing mares and speak with their trainers. Hear more from Mary in this video about why Claiborne felt it was critical to get behind this cause, and what's next.
#TBMakeover: Tiger Blood
Tiger Blood raced just a few months ago at Gulfstream Park, but he's already taking strides into a second career with the Bennings, themselves Makeover veterans. Get to know this multiple stakes winner, plus hear an update on the Bennings' 2022 Show Jumper winner and People's Choice Award winner, Prince of New York!
#TBMakeover: Godolphin Lifetime Care & Royal Park
Godolphin has been a major supporter of the Retired Racehorse Project and the Thoroughbred Makeover since its early days moving the event to Kentucky, and it's always been a major supporter of its own horses in second careers. Don't miss this story on how 2022 Competitive Trail winner, junior trainer Isabel Wells, teamed up once again with Godolphin to prepare Royal Park for the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover.
#TBMakeover: La La Land (IRE)
It's not uncommon for horses to change hands at several points in their life, which might mean a change in zip code, state or even country. This is no less true for Thoroughbreds, who may find themselves trotting the globe in their storied careers. Meet one such horse, La La Land (IRE), who now finds himself at the Thoroughbred Makeover from his new home base in Missouri.
Our first horse is in the ring at the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA)! No more fitting horse to present first than Jesslyn Woodall and Storm Threat, by Midnight Storm, who won the Kentucky leg of this year’s The Real Rider Cup.
#TBMakeover: Sandhill Lady, Former Broodmare
You might be most familiar with Jonathan and Ashley Horowitz as our livestream commentators, but this year, you'll be seeing them in the competition arenas as well. They're entered in our inaugural former broodmare pilot program, sponsored by Claiborne Farm, with Sandhill Lady, a 2009 CO-bred mare whose connections were seeking a third career option after she concluded her career as a broodmare. Check out their story!
