Did you know male cats are prone to urinary blockages more than any other animal we see in our clinic?!

Urinary blockages in male cats WILL kill them if it is not treated in a timely manner!! Urinary blockages are caused by a buildup of minerals in the urinary tract, which can form crystals or stones that block the urethra. Other causes include tumors, lesions, and scar tissue
Here are some things you as the pet owner need to be looking for!

🐈 Frequent trips to the litter box with very small amounts of urine. They may urinate in unusual places like the sink, bathtub, or tile floor.

🐈 Straining to urinate/seems to be "constipated".

🐈Blood in the urine.

🐈 Vocalizing when going to the litterbox.

🐈Acting lethargic, hiding, and vomiting.

It is VERY important that if you have a male cat that is showing these symptoms to be seen by a Veterinarian IMMEDIATELY AS THIS IS AN EMERGENCY!

Why do we recommend diagnostic testing for your pet VS just giving medications?

Most of the time we can not just tell you what is wrong just off of a physical exam!

If your pet is experiencing vomiting or diarrhea, it could be one of many health conditions! The diagnostics such as bloodwork and radiographs can tell us if your pet is having a pancreatitis attack or if there is a foreign body that is stuck in the intestines, a f***l test can tell us if there are intestinal parasites!

Diagnostic testing is an important step in the development of a treatment plan for your pet, allowing your veterinarian to most effectively target the underlying problem(s) and assess the probability of successful treatment. Your veterinarian can explain the purpose of each diagnostic test for your pet, and help prioritize which tests may be most helpful in determining the cause of your pet’s illness.

Do you wonder why we recommend heartworm testing every year with your pets vaccines?

Heartworm prevention needs to be given EVERY 30 DAYS! Per the company instructions!

Missing even one dose can be enough of a window to have your pet become positive, unfortunately it can take several months to show up on the heartworm test!

There can be break through cases, even though you are giving the medication! We recommend you purchasing the prevention from a veterinary clinic as the company will help pay for treatment if the medication was given correctly and is shown in the medical chart!

Be sure to keep up with your pets yearly tests and staying on prevention all year round!

Historically, sailors and fishermen believed that having a black cat onboard would bring the ship good luck and guarantee a safe journey (with the added benefit of fewer rats).

Fishermen’s wives would also keep black cats at home believing that they would ensure their husbands returned home safely from sea.

A far better onboard companion than a noisy parrot, don’t you think?

In Ancient Egypt, all cats, including black cats, were considered sacred and worshipped.

The goddess Bastet, a deity often depicted as a woman with the head of a black cat, was strongly associated with domestic cats.

Every house and temple had at least one cat as it was seen as a way to bring luck into your family.

Cats were often cared for and fed by poor, lonely ladies who were accused of witchery and as a result, got a bad rep.

Black cats were considered especially desirable partners for witches because of their ability to remain unseen in dark places and as witch hunts grew in popularity, many superstitions about uniformly black felines started to develop.

Thankfully witchcraft is now something we worry about less, so those beautiful black kitties can rest easy.

It is Black Cat Appreciation Day!
Did you know?
There are as many as 22 recognized breeds that can have solid black coloring but the only all-black feline is the Bombay cat.

The breed was developed in the 1950s by crossing Sable Burmese with black American Shorthairs with the aim to create a cat that resembled a miniature black panther.

Well if you can have a lion in your living, why not a panther!

Jett from Effingham County Animal Shelter & Control is still looking for his furever home or a foster!!!

He is such a sweet boy and looooves running around outside!! He is potty trained and so far seems to not mind other dogs!! He does have seizures but so far has not had any while at the clinic! We are waiting on some diagnostic testing results so we can see what may be causing the seizures!

We are not sure about cats but we for sure know he does not do well with specifically ducks 🦆 .
