This is what it looks like when you surrender your dog to a shelter. This is from a dog who was dropped off to the shelter after being in a quiet home, with a bed, with a family. This is diarrhea from having an upset stomach. Have you ever been so anxious to the point where you get sick to your stomach? This is a 24/7 feeling for a dog who has been surrendered. “Where is my family?” “Why am I in a cage?” “Why are all these dogs barking at me?” Imagine one day you’re taken from your luxurious life and thrown in prison for no reason, never to see your family again. Did you know 50% of dogs who are surrendered to a shelter don’t make it out? Pets are a lifelong commitment. Do not get an animal if you cannot financially, emotionally, or physically care for one. Newsflash, there is no such thing as a perfect dog or cat. They are expensive and a lot of freaking work. The loyalty of an animal is unmatched. They would never do it to you, so don’t do it to them.

🚨SHARE THIS🚨 Today we reached a new record with 844 dogs in care, including 660 adult dogs and 184 puppies. More than 100 dogs in our care have been in our care for 90 days or more. Now more than ever, we need our community’s help to relieve the pressure on our shelters and the animals themselves.

Here's how you can help:

💙Adopt: If you’re considering adding a pet to your family, think adoption first. Adopting saves lives and there are thousands of pets in crowded shelters waiting for a second chance. Visit sdhumane.org/pets to browse the pets in our care.

💙Foster: This is a critical – and temporary – way you can make an immediate impact and help save lives. By opening your home to foster a pet, you give them relief from the stress of the shelter and create desperately needed space for other animals with nowhere else to go. Visit sdhumane.org/foster to sign up.

💙Spay and neuter: Increasing the number of spayed/neutered animals is the only way to stop the crisis of pet overpopulation at its root. Visit sdhumane.org/spay for low-cost resources.

💙Donate: Make a gift to help care for the 1,971 pets who are in our shelters right now and counting on us for a second chance. Visit sdhumane.org/donate to contribute.

We’re committed to doing everything we can for animals in San Diego County, but we need your help. Thank you for your support and compassion.

Did you know there are nearly 500 pets available for adoption on our pet rehoming page? This resource supports pet owners who need to find new homes for their pets when they face unexpected life changes such as health, housing or financial difficulties. By choosing to rehome a companion, owners are making a compassionate decision to place pets directly into a new home and avoid bringing them to a shelter. Plus, adopters can gain valuable insights into a pet's personality and history directly from the people who know them best! If you haven't found "the one" in our shelters, check out all the wonderful community pets available now at sdhumane.org/newhome.

Starting this week, we're extending our adoption hours on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. at all our shelter campuses (Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside and San Diego)! With over 1,900 animals in our care, our goal is to help more pets find loving families by offering extended adoption hours that are convenient for our community.

(Note: This change is limited to adoption services only. All other services, including our Resource Center, Community Pet Pantry, licensing, clinics, etc. will maintain their usual operating hours.)

The days following July Fourth celebrations are always especially busy at San Diego Humane Society. Unfortunately, we’ve already had more than 63 stray pets arrive at our shelters (including those pictured here), and our teams are working to get them back to their families as quickly as possible. If you or someone you know is missing a pet, please visit sdhumane.org/lostpet to see all of the found pets in our online database, as well as additional tools to help your search. You may also text "LOST" to 858-SAN-LOST for helpful tips and resources. Please share this information to help even more pet families in our communities know where to look for their missing pets!

Our friend Lauren Coles from Coles Fine Flooring and Smooch are here to share some simple steps pet owners can take to protect their pets before the Fourth of July holiday! These include ensuring your pet has a registered microchip and a secure collar with up-to-date ID tags, arranging pet care if you'll be away and keeping pets securely indoors. Pets often get frightened by the July Fourth celebrations, but these steps will help keep them safe and make it easier for them to reunite with you should they become lost!

As a reminder, we are offering FREE microchips at all our campus vaccine clinics through July 3 and waiving reclaim fees for lost pets through July 7.

A dog has no use for fancy cars or big homes, or designer clothes. A waterlogged stick will do just fine. A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he will give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special?
