Josie's Misfit Ranch is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 20th annual Dachshunds on Parade this year in downtown Ellensburg. The event will be sponsored in part by Club 301 and Valley Veterinary Hospital & Cascade East Animal Clinic, as well as the Ellensburg Downtown Association.

This year's event will feature not only the Dachshunds you love, but will also feature other race, costume and trick categories for small, medium and large breed dogs. It's an opportunity to celebrate everything dogs can do!

This absolutely beautiful senior doggy had a relaxed toenail trim this morning.

With older pets, I find it is beneficial to work where they are most comfortable. We say hello, then they show me where they want to lie down. I manuever around where they want to be, allowing them to stay cozy and relaxed.

Did you know that a dog's nose is as unique as your fingerprint?

Nose prints can be used to distinguish different animals not only in dogs, but also in cattle, cats, deer, and other animals. It is as simple as spreading a small amount of ink over an animal's nose, pressing onto which a paper or soft cloth to lift the nose pattern impression.

What is one dog walking accessory you can't live without?

For me, it is this hands free doggy bag holder. Yep, that small chunk of metal is pretty fantastic! Here are the reasons why I love it so much:

1. It's convenient. This item is small and hardly weighs anything, so it is easy to always have on-hand.

2. It allows me to keep my hands free. Walking a dog is more difficult when one hand is occupied with managing a large, smelly doggy bag. This allows me to carry a full doggy bag without losing some of my handling capabilities.

3. It's easy to use. After tying the knot on the doggy bag, all I have to do is slide it in the clip. This makes it easy to use with gloves or pulling dogs, unlike other designs.

4. It's cheap. I bought two of these clips on amazon for $12.99. They each came with a carabiner and a waste bag dispenser.

Let me tell y'all the story of how Peter got his name.

Seven years ago, shortly after I captured him, he started his life with me in a small wire crate next to my bed. He was flea ridden and not quite litterbox trained, so I kept him in there when I couldn't watch him as a temporary measure. He didn't mind this at all as he was regaining his strength from being near starving and dehydrated.

One evening, I awoke to his frantic little meows. He was energetic and happy, so he wanted attention! I think he got the zoomies for the first time in his life, but was too confined to let it out. So I watched him do something that I have yet to see another kitten achieve; he crawled up the side of the crate, then upside-down across the top, and finally down the other side. He was my spider-cat. So I named him Peter after Marvel's Spiderman.

I think that most animals have influence over their chosen name, and many have a good story behind it. How did your pet get their name?

This morning stayed in bed an extra 15 minutes because my cat wanted cuddles. I chastised myself for running late for this poor reason. Reflecting on this now in the evening, I am glad that I was able to give him a little extra love. I have spent today running around town hardly taking a breath at home, so he appreciated and needed that time in the morning. When I arrived home for the night, he was excited to see me and we haven't had a moment apart. So yes, that time spent with him was not a waste. I am thankful for those morning cuddles with my kitty.

What do you do when a kitty scheduled for a sanitary trim says absolutely not to the electric grooming clippers?

You take a breath, give the kitty lots of pets and love, and find a method that works for them.

Today, Sasha was getting very stressed with being restrained while I prepared to begin her sanitary trim. So we decided to go for Plan B: I gave her lots of love and brushes with her favorite comb and used my grooming shears instead of the electric trimmers. Instead of restraining her, I worked around where she was laying or pet her to encourage that she moved into another position so I could get a better angle. We went slow, and I only touched her mats or rear area when she most comfortable. So she spent the whole time purring and we still removed all of her mats. The extra time was worth making this sweet kitty happy.
