🕒Time to get your mares under lights again🕒

Its Photoperiod Manipulation Time - please check out these notes from Dr. Lopez and Anndie to help ensure your best breeding season yet.

If you are planning to breed your mare as early as possible in 2025, we are rapidly approaching the time to get those ladies under lights! Here are some important things to keep in mind while preparing to do so:
💡The recommended photoperiod to replicate is 16 hours of total daylight, started 60 days prior to the desired breeding time.
💡Intense light is not necessary or recommended, and the common guideline is "bright enough to read a newspaper in all areas of the stall or pen".
💡Mares that are kept under lights will not develop a thick Winter coat, so blanketing is often advised in cooler weather.
💡It is equally important for mares to get 8 hours of darkness! Mares that are under constant light do not cycle normally.
💡Proper nutrition/body condition, especially in older mares, will aid in getting good early cycles in addition to photoperiod manipulation.
💡Light-mask products works great when managed correctly, however it is essential to ensure that masks do not die, re-set, etc. causing changes to the proper function of the light.
If you need help developing a light plan for your mares give us a call at (509) 859-2933.

I’m gonna get this post on just under the wire! Tech week can’t end without me thanking the lovely group of ladies that are responsible for making CWEH tick! I’m not sure that I haven pictures of all of them but I’m gonna do my best. Herding the cats that are our ever growing group of doctors is not easy and as we grow each of these ladies is wearing more hats and taking on more responsibility! Cassie and I Can’t thank you all enough for all you do! If you see any of them around please make sure you thank them because they get very little credit for keeping the horses we all love happy and healthy! This year they’ve added rehabilitation an nurturing a batch of interns in to adulthood! I’m going to thank them all here 1 by 1:

Abby Slyfield LVT: practice manager, lead tech, hospital referee, Dr Bergevin’s therapist! This practice doesn’t go without her. As she proves every time she’s on vacation.

Pam Poole LVT: Operations manager. Pam is mostly now behind the scenes or behind the screens but you’ll still see her out on the occasional emergency or running anesthesia. She is instrumental(see what I did there) in getting all our surgical equipment and keeping it running! She also does a lot with HR and making sure people get paid on time! Lots of hats.

Anndie Lund: she is our repro manager and all around good attitude haver! We love Anndie! Her and Dr Lopez are doing lots of exciting new things with the repro department and they wouldn’t be possible without her!

Beritt Dompier: I think she still works here but I haven’t seen her in a while while she welcomes her new little one! She still techs on the weekends!

Alexis Zifer: Alexis does a great job keeping our hospitalized patients happy and helps out with rehab! Incidentally she’s been here for just over a year now and we’re thrilled to have her!

Janel Holden LVT: another one of the all star LVTs, she runs anesthesia like a boss and if your horse has had surgery she probably was involved and was the reason it slept great and woke up smoothly

Renee Houlbjerg LVT:(no chance I spelled that right) another person with an amazing attitude and is willing to fill in wherever we need her and takes an amazing amount of anesthesia on call. We’re lucky to have you!

Rileigh McClure: she’s like a Swiss Army knife, works in reception, works in the pharmacy, techs, makes coffee, all the things. And is a world champion napper!

Lydia Johnson: She’s responsible for Dr Casillas and making sure his clients are happy and they get through their days smoothly although occasionally I steal her for a field trip.

Rachel Burke: Dr Lillich’s circus coordinator. Proud of her!

Carlee Houle LVT: Last but not least my personal technician! Has one of the toughest jobs in the practice keeping the grown toddler happy and also being a great friend and role model to his children when they tag along! Also need to add professional driver to the job description.

Morgan Burke: pretty sure she still works here but she’s recovering from being broken and is a great example of how all these ladies take risks every day to help our equine patients! We look forward to having her back soon.

Jess Hartley: She’s moved on to a new adventure but is still part of the team. She runs our sister business Lakeshore Equine Rehab and you will see her if you book an appointment(hint hint). Thanks for going on this new adventure with us.

Cassie, Jose, Maria, Jimbo, Margaret, and Gobi(haha), and myself can’t thank you all enough for everything you do and none of you gets the recognition you deserves. In other news here’s some photos for embarrassment. Gosh darn I hope I didn’t miss anyone!

Some amazing Before and After goodness from the Lakeshore Equine Fitness and Rehabilitation team!

Let's talk about haul-in appointments!

We designed these to cater to those wanting to add a different modality of exercise to your horses fitness or rehabilitation program in addition to your at home routine. This is a great way to take that to your horse to next level! While aquatic therapy can be utilized daily, check out Oddie's results with 1-2 weekly sessions on the aquatread, solarium and 3D vibration plate through the strenuous summer show season! Consistency is key and here's why!

“The combination between the aquatic, 3D vibration and infrared therapies have been a game changer for Oddie. I have noticed a vast improvement in his mobility and strength in particular. Movements that were more challenging in the past are much easier for him to perform now, thanks to the time spent at Lakeshore. Not only can I physically feel a difference, but it is also evident in his overall appearance. His topline and hind end is much stronger than it has ever been. I am very grateful for Jess and her team. Their dedication and genuine love for the horses under their care is unreal. I would trust them with any of my horses for any period of time.” - Ashley Widmer with Widmer Eventing

👑Meet the small but mighty King👑

King came into our hospital last week after a few days of intermittent colic signs at home. Medical management brought some improvement, but he still wasn't quite himself. After investigating further, King gave us a bit of a surprise - two large enteroliths that were visible on abdominal radiographs. He was soon scheduled for colic surgery, and both stones were removed from his colon.

Despite being 28 years old, King has a lot of life in him. It wasn't long into his stay at CWEH that he quickly won the hearts of all the hospital staff and clients. We are so happy to see him return to feeling spunky, and wish him the speediest recovery at home!

Check out this excellent video from Equitom (Belgium) showing their team performing an OCD surgery on a Stifle. This is a common surgery that both Dr. Jose Casillas and Dr. Jim Lillich perform here at CWEH routinely.

For more information on this disease process, see these notes from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. ACVS is organization behind board certifying surgeons:
"Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a relatively common condition affecting cartilage and bone in the joints of horses. It causes clinical signs in 5-25% of all cases. OCD is due to a derangement in endochondral ossification (bone formation during fetal development), and considered part of a larger umbrella called Developmental Orthopedic Disease. Therefore, while OCD does not have a predilection for breed or s*x, it is widely considered a young horse condition. Malformed cartilage in OCD joints is irregular in thickness and weaker than in normal joints. This creates the cartilage and bone flaps we typically associate with OCD that either remain partially attached to the bone, or break off and float around the joint. These flaps and areas of abnormal cartilage and bone cause inflammation in the joint, and over time may lead to the development of arthritis. OCD is usually caused by a combination of several factors acting together, including:
☝️Rapid growth and large body size
☝️Nutrition: Diets very high in energy or have an imbalance in trace minerals (low copper diets)
☝️Genetics: Risk of OCD may be partially inherited
☝️Hormonal imbalances: Insulin and thyroid hormones
☝️Trauma and exercise: Trauma (including routine exercise) is often involved in the formation and loosening of the OCD flap"
Once an OCD is located, usually the best treatment is surgical removal of the abnormal bone and cartilage.
