Setting the Record Straight About Pigture Perfect Rescue & Sanctuary,
To our supporters and those who care about animal welfare,
I am writing this to address the recent post about Pigture Perfect Rescue & Sanctuary that has caused confusion, hurt, and misunderstanding. While I typically avoid responding to public negativity, it’s important to clarify the truth for the sake of the animals and the amazing community that has supported us over the years.
First, let me say this: I love animals deeply. Creating a sanctuary was a labor of love, and my commitment to their care has always been my priority. The decision to rehome the animals was heartbreaking, but it was necessary under the circumstances.
Unfortunately, some of the statements made about me and the sanctuary are untrue or misleading. Here’s what really happened:
The claim that I neglected to seek medical care for a suffering animal is false. Yeti, a dog that was being boarded with me, was taken to a vet as soon as possible, which was at 8am in the morning. At 10:20 AM I spoke with the Veterinarian and was advised that Yeti’s condition was vastly improving and that he would be available to picked up by 12:00PM that day. I contacted his owners right after speaking to the vet to advise them of his condition. When Yeti was picked up from the veterinarian, no paperwork was given during his discharge, and no further treatment plans were discussed other than medication to give him. Yeti passed away within 2 and a half hours after he was released from the care of the vet.
I was charged with animal abuse in the second degree. While this sounds alarming, the charge does not reflect the full story. The charge stemmed from inaccurate information provided from the veterinarian that I took Yeti to for medical attention. The veterinarian stated that she gave instructions to take Yeti to get additional care after releasing him from her clinic, however, she also stated, in her testimony in court, that she made no calls to other vet clinics to coordinate that extended care. The veterinarian also stated in her testimony that she could not provide such documentation to the court to prove further treatment was discussed with me; to not be able to provide such documentation or to not have contacted other veterinarians is against her code of ethical conduct. This incident with Yeti had nothing to do with my rescue or the care for the animals here.
I agree that sanctuaries and rescues should be held to high standards. It has always been my goal to meet and exceed those standards. Unfortunately, running a sanctuary can be overwhelming, especially when resources are limited. While I have made mistakes, none were out of malice or neglect. Concerning Melvin and the allegation of my failure to assist him: Oddman Inn did visit my residence after Melvin had just sustained significant injuries. They offered their assistance, indicating they had the money to support the best treatment available and would be willing to aid in his circumstances. Oddman Inn took Melvin from Pigture Perfect immediately after they offered their help- the first night they met him. I was nothing but grateful and thankful for them being able to help Melvin. The only thing I was aware of was that they were offering to assist Melvin and that they had more resources than I had; I was unaware that they would use him to discredit me thereafter. I am disheartened that one rescue would use its kindness to tarnish another's reputation.
Despite these challenges, I have always acted in the best interests of the animals. When the courts made it clear that I could not continue, I reached out to other rescues to HELP ME to find them loving, safe homes, not defame me. I am grateful to those who have stepped forward to help with this process.
To those who have questions or concerns:
I invite you to reach out to me directly at 509-312-0880 . I am more than willing to discuss the situation openly and honestly. To those helping to rehome the animals: Thank you. While this is a devastating time for me personally, knowing that the animals will be cared for gives me peace. I understand that people may have strong opinions, but I ask for compassion and fairness. Everyone who has built something for the love of animals knows how hard it can be.
Thank you for listening and for caring about the animals.
Sincerely,
Mandee Graham
