November is also Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Each year over 6 million dogs and 6 million cats receive new cancer diagnoses. That is a staggering number! What is a pet owner to do? Spaying and neutering can greatly reduce the risk of mammary, ovarian, prostate, and/or testicular cancer. If you notice any suspicious behavior or growth, contact your vet. Early diagnoses can aid in treatment and make for a better outcome overall. https://www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/petcare/cancer-pets

It's National Seatbelt Day! We urge you to consider your pets' safety when they ride in the car with you. There are approximately 100,000 animals injured or even killed in car accidents and that number doubles if you include truck bed-related injuries and deaths. That is why it is so important that they be properly belted in and not allowed to hang out of a window or ride in a truck bed. https://www.avma.org/news/data-safety-regulations-lacking-when-it-comes-pets-and-vehicles

Today is National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day. Dogs with lymphoma have a limited prognosis, the survival rate is 4 weeks to 1 year after diagnosis. Several purebreds are more predisposed than others like; the chow chow, Saint Bernard, Bassett Hound, Golden Retriever, Airdale/Scottish/Westie, Yorkie/Bull terriers, German Shepard, Rottweiler, Beagle, and Poodle. Remission is possible with the usage of certain therapies like radiation, surgery, or steroids. https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/lymphoma-in-dogs/

Autumn is in full swing now and as the leaves, acorns, and walnuts fall, be sure to keep a watchful eye on what your pup may sniff or ingest. Acorns are actually toxic to dogs and should be kept away from hungry mouths. Ingesting too many tannins may lead to gastrointestinal upset and in very severe cases liver & renal failure. If you are worried fido may have eaten acorns, please reach out to your vet and contact pet poison control immediately. https://www.bluecross.org.uk/advice/dog/health-and-injuries/are-acorns-poisonous-to-dogs #:~:text=Acorns%20contain%20tannins%2C%20a%20type%20of%20chemical,blockage%20of%20the%20intestines%20in%20smaller%20dogs.
