In just 3 weeks, Healing Spirit will once again be hosting the Humboldt Bay Critter Crawl to benefit the Northcoast Marine Mammal Center in Crescent City. The event features a 4.5-mile open water swim along the length of the bay from the Samoa County Campground to the Woodley Island Marina. We still have openings for paddlers to accompany the swimmers in a kayak or paddle board. Paddlers play an important role in helping swimmers navigate the channel and ensuring their safety. There is no fee for paddlers to participate in the event. In exchange for your time, you will enjoy a few hours on and around the bay, receive a Critter Crawl t-shirt, and abundant swimmer gratitude. If this sounds like fun (it is!), please visit the registration site at: https://events.eventzilla.net/e/humboldt-bay-critter-crawl-2023-2138590849

Honey had a good week. Two hydrotherapy sessions with Jen, a midweek therapeutic massage with Marjan Carroll, and a ton of love from the Healing Spirit staff. Thank you, Jen, Marjan, and everyone else who has volunteered to help this sweet dog. She is still a bit timid, but we are seeing more of her happy face. Please help Redwood Pals help more dogs like Honey. You can donate to Redwood Pals directly, or through Honey’s fundraiser here: https://www.mightycause.com/organization/Redwood-Pals-Rescue

Honey has started her rehab in our underwater treadmill. She is 3 ½ weeks out from her surgery and is now fully weight bearing on her leg! While still restricted to short leash walks outside, thanks to Jen she is enjoying a combination of walking, stretching, and massage in the water.

We are grateful to all those who have helped Honey on her journey thus far and to those who have donated to her fundraiser. We are still seeking additional donations to help Redwood Pals cover the costs of her surgery. Here is the link for anyone who wishes to contribute. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to Redwood Pals Rescue, Honey has been able to have the surgery she needed to save her leg! She has been a trooper and is now on the path to recovery.

To date, generous donations from the community have raised over $800 toward the cost of her surgery. We still need an additional $3,700 so that Redwood Pals can continue to use their limited resources to help other dogs in need. If you wish to help, you can donate through Mightycause here or at Healing Spirit.

We will continue to post updates on her recovery and rehabilitation.

Thank you to all those who have stepped up to help Honey on her journey. We look forward to celebrating her first run on the beach.

This is Honey. She is a very sweet 4-year-old cattle dog mix who had the misfortune of breaking her leg. She was surrendered by her previous caregivers as they were unable to provide any form of treatment.

Due to the nature of her fractures, they are unlikely to heal well with a simple splint or cast. While amputation is an option, we would love to help her to keep her leg. The cost of orthopedic surgery at a specialty center is $5500.

Healing Spirit will cover the costs of her immediate care and pain management. We will also help with her rehabilitation. We have set up a fund for donations to assist with her surgery.

We are partnering with Redwood Pals Rescue to provide foster care and find her a forever home once she has healed.

Please let us know if you would like to help. We can be reached by phone or text at (707) 822-8387 or email to [email protected]

This is a great way to help our neighbors in need and prevent injuries before they happen. We so appreciate Redwood Pals Rescue and all that they do on behalf of the fur kids in our community.

Have you been looking for a way to help out dogs in need but aren't looking to foster or adopt at this time? Here's an idea:
It has come to our attention that there is a neighborhood in Loleta where the homes do have dogs but don't have fences. This has resulted in an unsafe situation. Can we follow the model set by Fences for Fido and others and help get some fences up? There is funding for materials but a shortage of human power. What a great project for a youth group or a service organization! Please contact us for more details.
(Photo for attention; actual fences may be different depending on available materials and individual needs)

Happy June!

It’s been a while since our last post, so time for a few updates.

First of all, we want to thank all of you who have visited our practice during the past year for your patience, cooperation and understanding around curbside appointments and other COVID-19 precautions. We recognize that the additional wait time during appointments, communication challenges, and the absence of face to face contact have been stressful for our patients, and for you, their caregivers. But collectively we have persevered! Our staff remains dedicated to your fur kids and committed to providing the best care we possibly can. We sincerely appreciate all of you and look forward to the day when we can welcome you back in the building with some return to normalcy. For now we are continuing to take precautions, awaiting further guidance from the California Department of Public Health and CalOSHA.

Next, as a result of changes to our local after hours emergency rotation, beginning this month, through the end of the year, we will be open most Sundays for urgent care and emergency appointments only between 7 AM and 5 PM. We will remain open for regular appointments Monday through Saturday, but may have reduced hours on some days until we are able to adequately expand our team to meet the need.

Finally, we are once again hosting the Humboldt Bay Critter Crawl, our annual fundraiser to benefit the North Coast Marine Mammal Center. This incredibly fun community event will be held on Sunday, July 25th. For more information on how to join us as a swimmer, kayaker or spectator visit: https://healingspiritvet.com/humboldt-bay-critter-crawl/.

Wishing everyone good health. We look forward to seeing you soon.
