Yesterday was International Day of Veterinary Medicine, a day in which we look to honor the field that takes care of our furry companions and those who dedicate their lives to promoting animal welfare and health.

3.5 years ago we took in 42 cats from a hoarder house after a fire at the residence. We named them after Baskin Robbins Ice Cream flavors and they became known collectively as the Ice Cream Cats. Most of them were adopted over the next few months but about a dozen of them were under socialized and while they never minded the consistent food and clean living space, they preferred their space so obviously it has taken longer to find them new homes. When we moved to the new facility in October there were still 4 Ice Cream cats with us. We were delighted when Rum Raisin was the very first animal to be adopted from our new building. We took this as a good omen!

Yesterday, a pair of heroes came through our doors. This mother and daughter duo were looking for a bonded pair and were happy to take a couple of cats that might be harder to place. They gravitated toward the Ice Cream cats and when they heard their story and that there were only three left they couldn't imagine just taking two and leaving one sole survivor alone. SO THEY TOOK ALL THREE!!! After 3.5 years with us Rock n Pop Swirl, World Class Chocolate and Mama's Makin' Cookies are finally home ❤️❤️❤️❤️

We like to say we are More Than a Shelter and we think we've earned the title. We never gave up hope that all of these cats would find heroes and we committed to let them stay in our care for as long as it took. The shelter isn't going to be the same without them, but we’re so happy they got the second chance they needed and deserves! ❤️

Did you know that it’s National Safe Toys and Gifts Month? 🎁 During the gift giving season, we recommend reading reviews and examining all toys to ensure they are safe for your beloved companion.

☑️ See what other buyers say about the sturdiness of the toy. If it can be easily torn apart maybe it isn’t the right toy for your pet.
☑️ For stuffed toys, check to see if they are labeled for children three years of age or older! Also check to see if they contain dangerous fillings. Nutshells and polystyrene beads are dangerous, and even some “safe” fillings aren’t safe to digest.
☑️ Make sure it isn’t small enough to be a choking hazard!
☑️ Check for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) label. This guarantees the toy has met the national safety standards.
☑️ After purchase, it’s good to regularly check toys for signs of wear and tear and replace them if they are damaged to prevent injuries or illness.
☑️ Not at rawhides or hard chews are safe. Check in with your vet for their recommendations about what is safe and appropriate for your pet.

🎶 When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore🎵

🎶 When the world seems to shine like you had to much wine, that's amore 🎵

When this little guy looks at you in the eye, thats amore!

Yes, this is little Moonpie with the big wide eyes searching for that special someone to take a shine and fall in love with him. He is 6-8 months old and can be a little reserved, but as soon as he feels a warm lap, he's full of purrs and love. He could get used to living with another cat, but may prefer to be your one and only.

Are you ready to fall in love? Come and meet Moonpie and you won't be disappointed.

Thanksgiving is this week and you know what that means.... FOOD. During the holiday season it is important to remember that not everything we enjoy is safe for our pets. 🍽🥧🍗
A little bite of turkey or ham will not hurt your pet, but please make sure it is a piece with no spices, fat, or bones to avoid GI upset or a blockage.
Garlic and onions are delicious for humans but can be devastating to dogs and cats. Avoid giving anything that could have onions or garlic to your pets - we advise not even to let them lick your plates after you are done.
Raw yeast dough can continue to rise and expand in a pet’s belly, not to mention the ethanol (alcohol) will be absorbed and could cause even more problems.
Do not let your pets have any baking batter, the xylitol and other artificial sweeteners can cause low blood sugar, liver damage and even death.
Chocolate can cause vomiting and diarrhea, increasing respiratory rate, excessive thirst and thus urination, abnormal heart rate, seizures and even death.
Keep an eye on the trash bin! All those delicious smells might cause curious pets to go snooping. Avoid potential issues by taking out the trash regularly or making sure the trash is well secured.

⚠️Attention Rogers Park & Evanston pet owners!⚠️
We have seen an increase of our Rogers Park and Evanston neighbors commenting on social media about rat poison being placed in areas where pets have easy access, as well as reports of numerous deceased wildlife.
Please stay vigilant and keep a close eye on your pets while out for walks to ensure their safety.
