Building a Killer Recall Response in Your Dog, STEP 3 (of 3): Extending Distance and Working with Distractions

We’ve built the foundation for a super recall with the Find Me game (step 1) and short-leash recalls (step 2). Once your dog is snapping right around the second you give the recall cue, and s/he is VIGOROUSLY running to you, you’re ready to practice calling your dog from longer distances and in more distracting situations.

IMPORTANT—practice on leash or in fenced areas for safety (to read about recall reliability and things to consider before going off leash, read my article “Recall Safety and Going Off Leash (The Myth of the 100% Recall) at https://www.goldstardog.com/visit-the-library

Example exercises:
o Go to a dog park, stand outside the fence, and ask your dog to come away from the dogs (start farther away from the fence and as your dog gets good at the exercise, get closer and closer to the fence). Be aware if this is agitating the dogs in the park, and go elsewhere!
o Go to a soccer or other sports game and ask your dog to come away from the action on the field (same as with the dog fence, you control the distance from the distraction—far enough away at first for your dog to be successful, then closer and closer as s/he gets better at it!).
o Be creative! What else can you practice on-leash recalls with? Your cat? Your children? The neighbors?
o Adding distance: To teach your dog to recall from longer distances, use a long line or a flexi-lead to let your dog get farther away from you before you call him/her!

Building a Killer Recall Response: STEP 2 (of 3): Short-leash Recalls

Last week, we paved the way to a great recall with the Find Me game.

Now we’ll teach the dog to return when we ask--to come when called.

Here’s how we start: SPONTANEOUS ON-LEASH SHORT RECALLS
Video tutorial (and TIPS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErknbNikCb0
1. Have your dog on a 6-foot leash. Walk about a bit, allowing your dog to wander at the end of the leash.
2. When s/he’s not paying attention to you, say his/her name, give the recall cue (i.e. “come”), and run backward a few steps.
3. The second your dog spins around in your direction, use a happy voice to encourage him/her to run to you.
4. Give a food reward right next to your legs at your dog’s nose level when your dog reaches you, while touching or holding the collar briefly (this gets your dog used collar holding and putting the leash back on). Giving the treat at the dog’s nose level keeps him/her from jumping on you and makes sure the dog comes all the way to you.
5. Then let him/her go back to what s/he was doing.

The GOAL for this exercise is two-fold: Getting your dog to snap right around the second you give the recall cue, and for him/her to run to you quickly and VIGOROUSLY! When these two things are happening, you’re ready to go to next week’s lesson (Follow me on FB to get notification when next week’s lesson is posted!)

Building a Killer Recall Response in Your Dog, STEP 1 (of 3): The Find Me Game!

The heart of a reliable recall (getting your dog to return when you call him/her) is a dog who has been taught that returning to you is SUPER FUN.

I start all recall work with a hide and seek game called "Find Me!" This game teaches your dog that seeking you out is fun and will be rewarded. TO LEARN HOW, check out the "Find me" game article in the Gold Star library: https://www.goldstardog.com

Next week I'll show you how to build on this, turning your work with the Find Me game into a fabulous "come when called" response!

So, go have fun and play the Find Me game this week!! Follow me on FB to get notifications for next lessons.

Does your dog want to be a therapy dog?

Well, we’ve got a course for that! This 6-week course gives dogs and handlers the necessary skills for not only passing the test, but also for working successfully as a therapy dog team. The course is taught by Deb, who has been a therapy dog handler since the mid-1990s, has had 6 therapy dog partners over the years, and has directed a large therapy dog certification and training program since 2005.

For A Dog Training Session Extraordinaire…
Looking for a great training session with your dog? Try this tried and true recipe.

Maybe it’s a weeknight, with little time to spare, and you’re for a quick and easy training session. Or maybe you’re gearing up for a new complicated trick that will take some time and effort.

Our dinner guest, your dog, may be a squirmy young puppy with an attention span that makes sound bites seem like epic novels. Or maybe you have a veteran partner you’ve been training with for years who knows how it all works. Maybe you have a dog who is tough to motivate, or one who is too motivated. This recipe will be a pleaser no matter who you have at the end of your leash. Adjust ingredients as needed!

Ingredients
• 2 cups of patience—whole and unseeded
• 3 cups each of open-mindedness, self-reflection, and willingness to learn from mistakes—mixed and well-blended, chilled in the freezer overnight
• 2 cups of observation and problem-solving, aged and cured
• 1 cup of technical skills (timing, cues, reinforcers, and how to use them)—these are available in many good training books as well as Gold Star Dog Training’s classes
• 3 tablespoons of humility (carefully peeled so as to remove the outer skin, called the ego, which should be discarded)
• Happy voice, silly moves, and positive energy, to taste

Make sure you have enough of these ingredients on hand before each training session. Adjust the amounts per your taste—and enjoy!

Time to take off the training wheels!

My Beyond Basics class is perfect for those who want to further their training. It is designed to be taken numerous times and still offer a challenge.

This course shows you various levels of each command or behavior. It's taught using an easy-to-apply, standardized approach to dog training and management that is designed to be useful no matter what level your dog is at with a given command or behavior. For those who are ready for the challenge, homework involves training out in public and engaging in discussion about the experience.

Woof!! What's the Dog Saying? (FREE EVENT, Woodbury VT, May 18)
A workshop for understanding what dogs are trying to say to us.

Is a yawn always just a yawn? Why does a dog shake off even when it’s not wet? Why is a growl a good thing? Is a tail wag always friendly? This popular, long-running dog communication and safety lecture is a multi-media extravaganza of fun where the audience also gets to test their "dog reading" skills. We’ll demystify dog communication, reveal some common dog-human misunderstandings, and explore how we can all live safely and happily together. At the end of the presentation, the audience engages in several fun, interactive exercises to practice reading dog body language.

Humans only; please leave your pups at home.

Who Ate The Flowers? Garden Safety For Your Dog

I am NOT a green thumb by any stretch of the imagination or in any alternate universe. In fact, if plants could talk among themselves (and who knows, they might), they'd probably refer to me as The Black Gardening Hand of Death and Destruction.

Nearly everything I plant dies. Perennials become annuals (as in, they don't come back next year). When I'm weeding, I can't tell what I planted from the weeds and usually pull out things I planted on purpose only the year before.

In short, I'm a gardening horror show. But let’s get to the dog-related part.

Check out my short article on garden safety and your dog: https://www.goldstardog.com/visit-the-library.

Look in the “Living with/Caring for Dogs” section for the article titled “Who ate the flowers…”

Today is National Lost Dog Awareness Day. Around 10 million dogs and cats get lost each year in the U.S. and only 23% are reunited with their owners. This day is used to spread awareness about ways to keep your dog safe, such as microchipping them so, if the worst happens, you can be reunited.
