Then and now🖤
Basta is one of my favorites, as is her person. She is a bottle babe from the reservation and has so many awesome qualities wirh a few "hurdles" we are working on.
Basta and I had our 1st 1-on-1 session in public today and she did AMAZING! New things and new people can be scary, but Basta worked though it like a CHAMP!
Forever grateful that her mom and dad trusted her with me 🤍

We have another "official" good girl in Flagstaff!
After 6+ weeks of hard work, Macy and her humans, big and small, earned their S.T.A.R Puppy.

Peak Paws is BUSY BUSY this time of year, but we are still finding time to volunteer. This week we went to 2 events at NAU to help relieve some finals' gitters and got to spend time in the Teen Club at the Boys and Girls Club.

I promise more group classes and availability for 1 on 1 training is coming in the new year!

NAU Dog Days is a 1 hour opportunity for students to hangout on the lawn and pet therapy dogs. Therapy Pets of Northern Arizona is always looking for more teams to volunteer! Therapy dog training STARTS with obedience.

These 4 finished off 5 weeks of basic obedience with a 10ft stay WITH another dog walking around 6ft from them. Congratulations to Maisy, Rex, Piper, and Chleo and their awesome handlers. They DEFINITELY did their homework each week.

Class was canceled tonight because Hiram and I were asked to fill in for a sick therapy team. Thank you to everyone for your understanding!
It's important for me to balance my passion to help my students and my passion to be in the community with my dogs.
One student really stuck out to me at Paws Your Stress today. She dropped her backpack and dropped to her knees next to Hiram. She carefully pet his head as she began crying. "I miss my dogs so much. This has been such a hard month and I just miss home so much." I told her Hiram loves to be hugged and she buried her entire face in his shoulder and squeezed him. For the next minute or 2, he just stood with her as she cried into his fur. It was a good, necessary cry that she thanked him for when she left.

One of our favorite treats to give are giant frozen carrots. It's a great cool down treat when it's hot, plus it keeps everyone busy for a few minutes!

Tucker had his first visit to the Peaks Senior Living Community this weekend. He accompanied his mom to a visit to HER mom who is 107! Tucker did amazing and brought a lot of joy to the people there. I mean, how could you not smile at that face?!
Tucker is not a therapy pet, but he was invited to return because he was such a gentleman. We have been working together for a year and while he still has crazy puppy outbursts every once in a while, I am so proud of him and his mom for the progress they make and the work they put in.

It's been nearly 2 weeks with Reilly and Jonesy, the terrified pups rescued from the desert. Look who decided to jump onto the couch with me?! 🥰😭He didn't stay long, but long enough for me to snap a picture which is HUGE!! He is starting to approach us on his own and I'm super happy about that.

One of the best things to teach your dog is to do NOTHING! It's also one of the most challenging things to accomplish. Being able to relax in an unfamiliar area with unfamiliar people, sounds, and smells shows the confidence your dog has in both themselves and you as their leader.

Disco got some public work downtown today. He is SUCH a gentleman when his vest goes on. We are a little out of practice due to splitting our time between him and Hiram AND all this SNOW limiting our outings. However, he did very well and walked great with "hands off" the leash.

Does your dog ignore you? If you were your dog, would YOU want to interact with YOU? Are you fun, or are you only talking to your dog when you want something? Is interacting with you rewarding for your dog? Having a positive relationship with your dog will eventually over rule treats, but start with fun engagement games that end with a reward! Here, Aksel and Disco are doing a WATCH ME without a lure. Disco gets a reward at the end of the exercise.
