Honestly, it's been a tough few weeks (months?)

Obstacle after obstacle have put us further and further behind, and every plan, every attempt, and every sacrifice made to catch up are foiled (almost to the point of being comical...)

Despite that, we're still pulling out record quantities of local, natural, healthy, nutrient-dense vegetables every week!

Remember, without you -- the customer -- buying our produce, none of this can happen. You keep us going!

Meet Marquetta, our intern for 2024!

Marquetta is a lifelong resident of Genesee County, and a veteran of the Army National Guard. She wants to start her own farm in the city of Flint, to share fresh produce with her family and neighbors.

"I love nature, I love to care for other people and for all life, including plants. I love parks, staring at the stars, or simply watching the sun rise and set everyday. Just being outside brings me peace.
[Having a farm] is a dream I've had since I was a kid. I want to beat the odds and become a successful farm owner."

With our warmer-than-average fall, the leftover salad greens from the fall have stayed in pretty good shape. However, we want these beds to be ready to plant in the spring, so that means getting rid of this season's leftovers and and weeds.

Today we put out a silage tarp, which completely blocks out the sun. Over the next three months, the lack of sun will terminate the remaining plants in these salad production beds.

Because the tarp is black, sunny days will keep the soil beneath the tarp warmer. Warmer soil means more active soil biology; the worms and bugs and microbes will get to work on composting and digesting the leftovers from this season's crops, enriching the soil for next year.

In the Spring, we'll be able to peel back the tarp and plant out the first successions of salad!

We went to the MOFFA Intensives last year, learned some interesting things, and met some really cool people! If you're interested in organic farming in Michigan, we recommend putting this on your schedule.

(Perusing the bookstore of ecological, organic farming, and homesteading books is another highlight and a great part of the experience.)
