Wild Agape

Wild Agape Training wild horses and burros with AZ inmates in the vaquero/buckaroo tradition. These methods are introduced to clients who work with program horses.

Individuals seeking an effective and unique way to process through emotional difficulties or a crisis are introduced to a method of horsemanship that develops the confidence, empathy, and direction necessary for healing and growth. Additionally, those seeking to develop skills that will enhance their personal and professional quality of life can discover a fun, exciting and fulfilling experience l

eading horses into places of peace. The horsemanship at the heart of the program is heavily influenced by the wisdom of Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Buck Brannaman who were all influenced by the Spanish and Mexican Vaqueros and Great Basin Buckaroos. The horsemanship passed down by these legends works with the horse to develop a partnership from a position of leadership. Troubled horses are given room to move and time to think so they can search for the good deal being offered. Clients participate in both groundwork and riding as part of the program. Fees: Fees are negotiable and set on a case by case basis as we cannot currently bill insurance. What we are not: Indy’s ministry background affords him the experience to be able to counsel, listen, and empathize. However, it is not our place nor goal to evangelize, preach, or witness to a particular view of faith. We meet people where they are and allow the experience with the horses to inform the direction of the therapy. Special Option: Sometimes, individuals cannot come to our ranch. In certain circumstances, Indy will travel to clients with one of his horses provided the client has access to an appropriate place to work. In these cases, millage is added to the fee.

Today the inmate trainers I work with surprised me by presenting me with a birthday card they had another inmate create. I share with them what I’ve learned from riding with Buck Brannaman as they work to gentle wild horses. The front of the card is a hand drawn picture of Buck. I was blown away by the skill and beauty of the artist and truly honored that the guys would go to such lengths to wish me a happy birthday. I was speechless and truly touched. Just because someone has made poor choices and made mistakes in life doesn’t mean that you should throw a whole life away. Redemption is available to everyone.

Newly removed BLM tags from new horses that arrived just two weeks ago. The trainer must be able to touch his horse and be able to have the horse accept their hands undoing the tag strings. It’s the first level of trust between the trainer and the wild horse.

Said goodbye to a special horse today. Slick suffered a injury about a year ago and can no longer be ridden. However, we found a home for him where he will be a companion horse and be pampered with love and a lot of treats 😁So happy for him!

Guys and their horses.

Another successful and drama free first ride on a wild horse today. People often ask how we get these horses ridden. It’s all about doing the right groundwork, being on “horse time”, and attention to detail. We meet the horse where it’s at and fix up a learning opportunity and then allow the horse to find it. It’s a remarkable thing to take a wild horse, partner it up with a guy who has never touched a horse before coming to the program, and get both to come together in a beautiful way. I’m honored to be a part of it!

This horse was returned to the BLM from a TIP trainer (Trainer Incentive Program). We were asked to see what we could do. You’ll see in the video that he double barrel kicks when trying to get his feet up by hand, and when they try to get a saddle pad on him. Notice that he is cross tied and has nowhere to go with his fear. They worked with him for two months with no progress. We’ve had him about a month and don’t work with him everyday. You’ll see the change in the videos of one of our guys working with him. When you apply the proper horsemanship, you can help a troubled horse work through just about anything.
