We are a big family, living in a tiny house, learning how to be more self-sufficient on 1/8th of an acre in the Cultural District of Fort Worth.

Queen "Bloody" Mary's reign has come to an end. She was a good queen, but unfortunately she loved the bad boys and created a hive that unleashed a reign of terror on our tiny farm. She was sentenced to ex*****on on May 1st, and her subjects were allowed a period of mourning before their new queen's inauguration.
Two years ago today on May the Fourth we installed our first hive, so it is fitting that our new Queen, Amidala, began her reign today. We also laid Queen Mary to rest in our garden near the salvia and bluebonnets. We're not sure what other beekeepers do, but we feel that our queens deserve a nice burial. ❤️

Did you know that you should remove all blossoms from new strawberry plants during the first growing season? As hard as it is to pluck off these cute little blossoms, removing them will allow the plants to focus their energy on growing as well as increase production. We will continue removing the flowers through the end of the month, and then hopefully we'll have a big harvest later this season!

A tiny Texas Spiny Lizard lives in our potatoes. Shall we call him Samwise, since he likes po-TA-toes? He's rather shy and doesn't like getting his picture taken, so this is the best I could do.

Our bunnies are more than just adorable fluffy fluffernutters...they also help us with our garden! Did you know that rabbit p**p, or "boop," as we like to call it (our kids love making portmanteaus 😂) is awesome fertilizer for your garden? It's high in nitrogen and phosphorus and it breaks down quickly and won't burn your plants, so you can put it in your garden right after you clean their cages!

We put Queen Mary's honey super on today...that hive is SPICY. If you've been following us for a while, you may remember that Queen "Bloody" Mary earned her name when she killed our fancy Bee Weaver queen that we bought last year. Her colony is becoming a bit aggressive. It just might be time for her reign to end soon.

What do you get when you have a bunny cage with a loose latch and two lovey-dovey bunnies? An unexpected litter and a deeper understanding of the phrase "breeding like rabbits," that's what! Although we did not intend for Polly and Digory to have another litter so soon, we're grateful that she and her seven new babies are healthy and doing well. Spring has definitely sprung on our tiny farm!

The girls are FINALLY laying some really beautiful eggs again after we had an outbreak of "egg eaters." It's very, very difficult to break chickens of that bad habit. It seems a combination of blown-out eggs filled with spicy English mustard and our biggest culprit (Luna) going broody has really improved the situation.

Day 32: Polly's kits are officially one month old today! We're probably not going to do daily updates on them any longer; however, stay tuned for their gender announcements as well as adoption details. They will be ready to hop to their new homes when they are 8 weeks old! (At the end of April, AFTER EASTER).

Day 24: We thought we'd take a little break trying to wrangle the kits for a photo and check in on Polly. She is doing a great job taking care of her babies! Rabbits are not the most motherly of animals, but she's always anxious to feed her babies and will bravely chase off River any time she so much as looks at them. 😂 (Don't worry, River is very gentle with all of our farm animals). Also, check out those cute bunny feet. ❤️
