Many of you know that my own dog, Leila, has faced some adversity in her life, including dog attacks and fights. These experiences unfortunately but understandably led her to being wary around certain other dogs. She particularly struggles with dogs larger than her who are approaching her head-on. This technique, called Counter-Conditioning, aims to build positive associations with things that are not positive to the individual. You can see in the video that we are outside of our local dog park (with some buffer space between). All I’m doing is throwing treats in the grass in the direction of the park - it can truly be that simple to change your dog’s emotional response! PS, this is also a great way to socialize puppies and teach them to be neutral around other dogs!

Another spaw day for Leila. She gets monthly visits with Dr. Jodie's Integrative Consulting, PLLC for acupuncture and laser therapy, which helps significantly to reduce her musculoskeletal pain. Many times when we come to these appointments, Leila is asleep by the end - she loves it! Apparently she was not feeling like laying on the mat today, lol!

I am deeply saddened by the Republic of Ireland’s decision to effectively ban XL Bully-types. Here’s what my pals at The Muzzle Movement had to say:

From midnight, the import, breeding, sale, and re-homing of XL Bully dogs will be prohibited in the Republic of Ireland. Additionally, as of 1 February 2025, owning an XL Bully will be illegal without a certificate of exemption.

To all the incredible guardians facing this monumental change, we want to share our heartfelt thoughts…

We are genuinely heartbroken for anyone who shares their life with an XL bully type. We know how deeply you love your dog, and we sincerely hope that everything we strive to accomplish at The Muzzle Movement demonstrates that a muzzle should never be seen as a "life sentence." Many dogs can and do lead happy and fulfilling lives while wearing muzzles.

Lastly, don’t let the negativity and prejudice get to you - keep your heads held high because you are doing brilliantly. 💕

Our hearts go out to the Irish XL Bully community… we stand with you every step of the way! 🤍

Little clip from us practicing sustained relaxation while watching other dogs, people, bikes, and cars go by this morning. This is what dog training is supposed to look like! Calm, casual, relaxed. Let’s face it: a little boring. No big blowout reactions, no extreme corrections. It might not be very entertaining to watch, but this type of training is much more effective than “flooding” the dog with stimuli. It’s also kinder to your dog.

Do you have a Labrador Retriever or Flat-Coated Retriever that seems hungry all the time? The POMC gene may be to blame.

New Information On The “Hunger Gene” In Labs And Flat-Coats
By Caroline Coile

Researchers have unraveled more information about the genetic POMC mutation that makes some Labrador Retrievers perpetually hungry. For one, the mutation has an allele frequency of 12% in Labs and of 60% in Flat-Coated Retrievers. These are the only two breeds in which the mutation has been found despite surveying more than 40 other breeds.

Dogs with one copy of the mutated gene have increased weight, body condition score, and food motivation. Dogs with two copies of the mutated gene have even higher weight, body condition score, and food motivation.

Because only 4% of Labs are homozygous for (have two copies of) the mutated gene, no homozygous dogs were used in the study. In a comparison of wild type (no mutated POMC genes) and heterozygous (one mutated POMC gene) in which the dogs were allowed to eat as much as they wanted, the heterozygotes ate more than the wild type dogs, but the difference was not statistically significant. The wild types did regurgitate the huge meals significantly more, however...continue reading: http://caninechronicle.com/?p=297067

Hi Everyone, I have some great news.

After a year of health struggles, 7+ surgeries (I’ve lost count!), and a move to a new state, I am moving back to Fountain Hills and finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel with my surgery journey (hopefully!). It will take some time for me to get a business license, insurance, and everything I need set up to start training again, and my health issues are unpredictable and life-long, but I plan to be training again in full swing in Fountain Hills by the end of this year! I am so excited to get to work with you and your dogs again, and am so grateful to everyone who has reached out to ask when I’m coming back. The answer is: soon!

Also, I will be completing my Clinical Pet Nutritionist certification soon, too, and will be offering that service as well. I’m so excited about this, as proper nutrition for our friends as just as much my passion as training for them is.

More updates to come soon!

What equipment do you use to walk your dog? This study suggests that a harness is a safer and more comfortable option than a collar.

“Conclusion: Variation in the pressures exerted on the neck may have implications on comfort and the potential to cause injury. No single collar tested provided a pressure considered low enough to mitigate the risk of injury when pulling on the lead.”

Heads up people! We are less than one month away from our pets’ least favorite holiday: 4th of July. This is your official reminder to talk to your vet about noise sensitivity or anxiety medications! Not only can they help your pet relax and not be bothered so much by all the chaos, it can truly save their lives. Did you know that 4th of July is the day that the most pets go missing in the US? Don’t let yours be one! Keep them HOME with the doors (including doggy doors) and windows closed and LOCKED. Use medication if you need to. There are plenty of safe medication options that your vet can discuss with you!

Practicing relaxing outside in a muzzle. Just because a dog tolerates a muzzle doesn’t mean they can relax in one, hence why it’s important to practice being relaxed while muzzled.

You never know when your dog might need to wear a muzzle, and you never know why a strange dog might be wearing one. Introductions to other dogs and people, eating things on walks, and emergency veterinary use are three reasons why we do muzzle training in this house, but there are endless reasons a dog could be wearing one.

Yes this muzzle is slightly too large. Still waiting on our custom one, but this one is good to practice in!

General tips about muzzles and dogs in muzzles:
- Give all dogs space, especially muzzled dogs. Some muzzled dogs are wearing it because they get scared easily.
- Don’t wait until the time comes when they need to wear one to practice wearing one! Imagine your dog broke their leg and is in severe pain. Severe pain makes anyone cranky, but animals who can’t communicate with words sometimes use their teeth to let us know when we’re accidentally hurting them.
- Try not to judge dogs in muzzles or their handlers, and don’t give unsolicited training advice.
- Your vet team or groomer will sometimes muzzle your dog (maybe even without letting you know!) during routine blood draws, exams, baths, and haircuts to keep themselves safe. This is appropriate and reasonable on the human’s side, but can cause the dog more stress in an already stressful situation if they are not already accustomed to the muzzle. This increases the risk of an undesired reaction (fear, aggression, etc) in the future.
- Don’t let your dog (or yourself!) greet a muzzled dog without direct permission from the handler. Again, this may be a fearful dog who needs space.
- Have a dog that eats everything on walks? Eats their p**p in the yard? Muzzle up, pup!

Early morning muzzle training session. Muzzle training is so essential and so often overlooked.

We ordered a new, custom one from The Muzzle Movement (size “Taz”) that will fit better than this Baskerville (size 5, too large for her), but it hasn’t come yet. Will of course show you all when it does!
