Separation Anxiety is heartbreaking. It has real consequences for dogs and their owners- stress, howling, barking, destruction, soiling in the house, and the many problems that arise from those behaviors.

And it's treatable!

I am proud to announce that I am officially a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer. This took four months of intensive training on par with a semester of my MS degree- and it was worth every moment and late night. I am proud to offer this life-changing service. We can make it better.

Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through beautiful scenery, after you have been cooped up all day in the same place, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged along at a fast pace. I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop and sniff the environment. Dogs largely perceive their world through smell and it’s how they collect and process information and make sense of their world. Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk is not in their best interests and as much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.
Studies have shown that allowing dogs to spend time sniffing provides so many benefits – promoting calmness, lowering stress and anxiety levels, lowering pulse rates, preventing cognitive decline and providing mental stimulation and enrichment are just some examples.
Make time for a slow “sniffing walk”, where your dog is allowed to decide which direction to go and allowed to simply follow their nose to their noses content! It may take more patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it.

On our first consult, clients often ask about leash tugging. I usually say that it's a response to frustration or stress. Addressing it directly backfires because that increases stress.

Instead, try giving the dog an appropriate alternative. The "Touch!" command can provide a sense of purpose and teamwork. And sometimes, the best response is a simple sniff-break. Always train with kindness.

Does your dog “Down” when you ask, but then pop up like a jack-in-the-box? This post is for you. The benefit to this skill is more than teaching them to stay in the down. It also helps them learn patience. If you want a dog that will stay where you put them, wait while you put on your shoes, or relax under a café table, this is where you start....

This post will help you teach your dog patience, and to not just up right after you ask them to sit or down.

I’ve got a point– I’d like you to consider adopting a senior the next time you look for a dog. There are plenty of lists about why senior dogs are great, but most of them leave off the best reason. A Senior Dog Will Change Your Life. I picked up Ripple from a shelter in Denver. She was emaciated, she had frostbitten notches on her ears, and she ran (okay, staggered) from everyone except one shelter tech....
