Although the weather seems to be turning a bit cooler 🤞, it's still rainy season, which means snakes are being snakes 🐍.

The chances of your pet having a run-in with a snake is inevitable. With Florida being home to 40+ species of native snakes, six of which are venomous, it's a good practice to have a snakebite emergency plan.

Luckily, our UF Small Animal Hospital has experience treating snakebites. Meet Josie, a sweet survivor who got a second chance thanks to our emergency and critical care team.

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heat stroke in our beloved pets. Dr. Ronald Goncalves, an emergency medicine and critical care specialist, brings his expertise to Animal Airwaves-Live to discuss this potentially life-threatening condition. Heat stroke is a serious and often underestimated danger for animals, capable of causing severe organ damage or even death if not promptly addressed. Unlike humans, pets can't easily regulate their body temperature or tell us when they're overheating. Dr. Goncalves will explain why certain animals are more susceptible to heat stroke, how to recognize the early warning signs, and most importantly, what steps pet owners can take to prevent this emergency situation.https://bit.ly/33GNM6v

Baxter the goat is one lucky guy! 🐐 Last September, he was rushed to the UF Large Animal Hospital with a life-threatening urinary stone obstruction. Our amazing team jumped into action, performing emergency surgery that very night.

Today, Baxter is back to his playful self (pictured here in the middle), thanks to the incredible skill and dedication of our large animal surgeons. We're so grateful to be able to provide 24/7 emergency care for all animals, big and small.

: Gators helping Bulldogs! In this photo from 1996, former faculty members Dr. Roger Clemmons and Dr. Rob Parker posed with Alexandra, an 11-month old English bulldog that was paralyzed when her owner brought her to UF. Drs. Clemmons and Parker collaborated in her care. Alexandra received innovative surgery that involved bone fusion, combined with the use of titanium mesh implants and a bone regeneration substance, and we did a story about this collaboration that enabled Alexandra to walk again. Sadly, Dr. Parker passed away some years ago. This story made a lot of people smile; it came out just after a Florida Gator football victory over the Georgia Bulldogs the previous weekend.

Has your pet shown abnormal behavior lately, such as hiding or growling? Our animals can’t tell us when they’re hurting, and assessing pain in our pets can be difficult. It’s important that pet owners be tuned in to any changes in behavior, the way your pet stands, walks or even looks at you. On today's Animal Airwaves-Live, Dr. Elizabeth Maxwell, a surgical oncology specialist, will discuss why pain assessment is so important and why contacting your veterinarian is critical if you suspect your pet is in pain. She’ll also discuss methods of pain management. The show airs from 1-2 p.m. on WUFT-FM, 89.1, on WUFT-FM, 89.1. Don't miss it!https://bit.ly/2SBInsQ

Over 19 years ago, in June of 2005, we held a groundbreaking ceremony for Deriso Hall, the building that houses members of our Food Animal Reproduction and Medicine Service. The building's construction allowed members of the FARMS service to have its operations based under one roof for the first time. Named for the late Bob F. and Evelyn B. Deriso, the building was made possible by a bequest from the Tampa couple of more than half their $2 million estate. They gave the gift in honor of Dr. Paul Nicoletti for his contributions to the control of brucellosis, a disease that was a major threat to livestock in the Derisos' day.

From left to right are Dr. Maarten Drost (professor emeritus), Dr. Vic Shille, Dr. Wy Cripe, Dr. Paul Nicoletti, former UFCVM dean Dr. Joseph DiPietro and Dr. Ken Braun. Drs. Shille, Cripe, Nicoletti and Braun are no longer with us, but their mark is felt on our college and the FARMS service every day.

Congratulation to Dr. Jose Carvajal! Formerly a clinical instructor in small animal surgery at UF, Dr. Carvajal ('17) recently completed a rigorous two-year fellowship program and he is the very first veterinary surgeon to be officially recognized as a Fellow in Joint Replacement Surgery by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).

The ACVS is the specialty board that sets the standards for advanced professionalism in veterinary surgery and is the specialty organization recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) for the certification of veterinarians in large and small animal surgery.

Mentored by Dr. Stan Kim, a professor of small animal surgery at UF, Carvajal completed his fellowship in July and is now working as an orthopedic surgeon at VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists in Portland, Oregon. He is also a UFCVM graduate (Class of 2017) and completed his residency here in small animal surgery before joining the faculty as a clinical instructor and entering the ACVS fellowship program.

The University of Florida is the only veterinary medical college in the world to offer four ACVS-approved fellowship programs: minimally invasive surgery-soft tissue, surgical oncology, minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, and joint replacement surgery.

Having your horse vaccinated routinely is important to ensure it stay protected against infectious diseases. However, each horse’s immune system is different, so horse owners should talk to their veterinarian about which immunization program makes the most sense for their animal. On today's Animal Airwaves-Live, an archive, Dr. Martha Mallicote, an equine internal medicine specialist, will discuss the importance of vaccination as a part of routine health care for horses. She’ll also address why keeping your horse healthy involves more than just adhering to a vaccination protocol, and why good nutrition, deworming, pasture management and minimizing stress and overcrowding are also important factors. The show airs from 1-2 p.m. on WUFT-FM, 89.1. Don't miss it! https://bit.ly/2SBInsQ
