Jack was elected as AVECCC Gilbert’s Patient of the Month. He was transferred to AVECCC from another hospital for acute kidney injury secondary to NSAID toxicity after ingesting Ibuprofen. Our team closely monitored Jack while he received fluid therapy along with other supportive treatments. At first, his kidney values continued to rise, in spite of treatments. Jack became polyureic (increase in urine production) while his kidneys were healing. He was eating and made daily improvements. Thankfully, he did not require dialysis. Jack was slowly weaned off IV fluids; however, our doctor informed his owner that Jack may need to be discharged from our hospital with a continued plan of subcutaneous fluids at home. He was able to go home with his loving family after 5 days of supportive medical care. Jack’s mom reports that he longer needs subcutaneous fluids and they continue to recheck his kidney values regularly. Isn't he the cutest? 🐾

It’s and this week is - an important reminder to us all that many people are going through silent struggles. Our very own veterinary health teams are at particularly high risk due to stressful job demands and the emotional toll of providing medical care for animals in need. However, anyone can be susceptible to suicidal thoughts so we should always be mindful and kind to each other. 💜 🤟

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a condition commonly referred to as bloat. This is a critical medical issue for dogs, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Bloat happens when gas or food stretches a dog's stomach. The distended stomach rotates, trapping the gas inside, and blocking off the stomach's blood supply. This can develop quickly, without warning, and requires immediate medical attention.

Here are a few ways you can help prevent bloat:

🐶 Encourage your dog to eat slowly
🐶 Feed smaller controlled portions
🐶 Don’t feed them right after exercise or when over-excited/panting heavily
🐶 Keep them at a healthy weight

If you suspect your dog has bloat, reach out to us right away. We're here 24/7!

This sweet 12-year-old Boxer mix, named Angel, made us chuckle because she pressed her face against the kennel door as she observed the hustle and bustle of our emergency treatment room. She required medical attention due to being unable to urinate. What a cutie! She's now at home with her family and on the mend. 🐾 🥰

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈♥
Author Deborah Barnes started Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day to give all pet-lovers a day to share memories of beloved pets that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge and are waiting for us there. The special day is commemorated on Aug. 28 each year and stands as a time to celebrate the life of the dogs that have brought us joy, unconditional love, comfort, and laughter through the years. ❤ Pets become family and we will be forever grateful for their companionship.

Looking for a summer fruit that’s safe to share? 🍉 🍉 🍉

Watermelon is 92% water so it’s a great treat to help keep your pet hydrated. It also has low calories, no fat or cholesterol, and is high in potassium and vitamins A, B6, and C. But be sure to remove the seeds and rind! (AKC)

Try freezing small chunks of watermelon to make an extra special treat for a hot day!

We've received so many kind messages and comments from pet lovers asking how Maezy is doing. We are grateful for all the love and support that has been poured out to her family. Thank you! 💜

For those following her story, Maezy continues to make progress. She is completely off of the ventilator and breathing mostly on her own with limited oxygen support. She has been able to enjoy some time outdoors and we're working on helping her regain some strength. We had extra special visitors from Gilbert Fire stop by today to offer their words of encouragement and to see how Maezy is doing. We can't thank them enough for their service in our community!

Meet Laila! This sweet 2 1/2 year old, chocolate lab, belongs to one of AVECCC's technicians. She gave her mom quite a scare when she had multiple episodes of vomiting and wasn't acting quite right. Laila required an emergency surgery for a mesenteric torsion of her intestines. This condition in dogs is a rapid and often fatal disease where the intestines spin around the mesenteric root, cutting off blood supply and causing intestinal death and sepsis. Thankfully, due to the speedy response of her dog mom and TLC from our team, Laila's surgery went great and was able to go home after 24 hours in our ICU.

Laila is doing great at home and is back to being her stubborn self! Her dog sis, Lani, is happy to have her hiking buddy back! 🐾

If your pet is ever injured and unable to walk, transporting them to the emergency vet can be a challenge. Here are some tips if you need to urgently and carefully move your pet to get them medical attention:

🚑 Towels, blankets, bedsheets, or pet beds can double as a pet stretcher to carry and lift your pet into the car carefully.
🚑 If you live alone and have a large dog breed, you could invest in a wheeled pet stretcher or wagon to have on hand just in case.
🚑 Injured animals are more likely to bite or claw out of fear or pain so be careful when moving your pet. For dogs, you may need to use a temporary muzzle to prevent a bite injury. For cats, it is best to approach them from behind and wrap them in a thick towel or blanket to protect yourself from biting or scratching.
🚑 Handle the injured animal as little as possible to prevent further injury to the pet or yourself.
🚑 If you are able to, give our emergency team a call and alert them that you are on the way so they can prepare for your arrival.

If you experience an emergency with your pet, give us a call at 480-497-0222.

Maezy, our resilient smoke inhalation patient, is making slow, but steady improvements. Regular family visits and words of encouragement fuel her progress. Our skilled emergency and critical care veterinarians continue to closely monitor her, preparing to wean her off the ventilator. Maezy’s family is grateful for all the kind words and support. ♥️

08/19/2024

Maezy is fighting for her life on a ventilator at AVECCC Gilbert due to smoke inhalation after her family’s house caught on fire. She received life-saving resuscitation by Gilbert Fire and Rescue and was transported directly to our emergency pet hospital for ICU care. Fire is devastating and our hearts go out to this family as they grieve the loss of their 3 other pets who didn’t make it. Our Doctors and staff are working hard to give Maezy the advanced medical care that she needs.

August 17th is !
Unfortunately, black kittens and cats are often overlooked at shelters and take longer to be adopted. Wrongly, they are thought to be unlucky or mischievous.

🥰 If you have a black cat, make them feel extra special today.
🥰 If you have been thinking of getting a cat and are able to care for it, consider adopting a black cat.
🥰 If you don’t fall into either of these categories, consider donating to your local shelter or tagging a friend in the comments below to spread to word!

Let's have some fun! Caption this photo of Juno sitting on a bench in our emergency lobby. We couldn't resist sharing this cute photo that her mom captured. 🐶 📸

Juno is a 9-year-old, female, Pitbull Mix who ingested some raisins at home. On presentation, our team induced vomiting and retrieved approximately 2 cups of raisins from Juno. Her owner approved the recommendations for IV fluids and monitoring for potential acute kidney injury. Juno's lab work was stable, and she was able to go home with her loving family after a night at AVECCC. We're glad she's feeling much better!

This sweet pup named Harlow was selected as AVECCC Gilbert’s Patient of the Month. Harlow presented to us originally for dehydration and not eating for a few days which then progressed to her being unable to sit sternal or stand on her own. Her muscles continued to spasm and tightened. We transferred her to Neurology to obtain an MRI and our team started treatment for suspect Tetanus. Tetanus is the result of a bacterial infection caused by clostridium tetani. This type of infection is rare and not commonly seen in dogs and cats. The bacterial infection prevents neurotransmitter release which can cause spasms of the jaw/facial muscles along with whole body rigidity. Harlow was hospitalized for 14 days in a quiet environment with intensive nursing care including: antitoxin treatment, antibiotics, muscle relaxers and other supportive care medicine. Harlow was unable to move/stand on her own and unable to open her jaw to eat, but with the help of our ICU nurses providing physical therapy, and a feeding tube, by day 10 Harlow slowly started regaining function. To this day we have word from Harlow’s mom she is happy, healthy, and playing with her sister Hadley!

With us in the peak of AZ summer, we want to make sure your pets are safe! Some things to remember are:

☑️ Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, seizures, bloody stool, and vomiting, to name a few

☑️ NEVER leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle (Even with the window cracked! Studies have found that cracking the window has very little effect on the temp inside the car.)

☑️ Educate your family and friends about the risks of leaving their pets in the car so they can keep their animals safe as well!

To read more on hot weather safety tips, check out this article from the ASPCA and share with your fellow animal lovers:

Like any season, summer comes with its hazards for pets. To make sure you’re prepared for whatever comes your way this summer, check out this list of summer safety tips from our experts at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

Congrats to Gloria Bishop for being selected as Gilbert’s Employee of the Month and someone who INSPIRES her teammates. Gloria is one of our Client Administrators and she’s currently in tech school. Gloria has been in the vet field for 3 years and in the animal care field for 10 years. She started volunteering at her local animal shelter at age 13. She’s been part of the AVECCC team for just over 3 months. She said that the favorite thing about her job is being able to help clients through difficult situations and make a bad situation a little less terrible for them. She also said, “It’s also extremely rewarding seeing successful treatments and watching healthy patients go home from the ICU!” In her spare time, Gloria goes to raves and music festivals, design and sew handmade clothing, and paints. She has one old, orange medium, mixed breed dog named Earl who is a very good, very stinky boy. We’re so glad Gloria is part of our team!
