Tips on How to Choose a Boarding Facility for Your Pet
When it comes to choosing where you will leave your pet when you are away from home you should check the facilities that are available in advance. Making calls over the phone is a good place to start. You need to ask questions. However, you should not make your choice until you have visited the facility.
Never base your decision only on price. Base your decision on a fact finding personal visit. Then you can weigh out your options and make a sound decision.
As a responsible pet owner you want your pet to be comfortable and in the hands of responsible compassionate, committed, and caring people. A personal visit will allow you time to see what each individual business offers. Value for your dollar is valuable care. When checking prices, you should make sure you are getting value for your dollar.
Meet the owner and/or staff. Personnel should be neat and presentable. They don’t have to be spotless. When working with pets you can get soiled as soon as you get to work. Cleaning a pet care facility is hard work. Staff members should be courteous and take an interest in you, your concerns and your pet. They should show interest by asking you questions about your pet(s).
When visiting the facility ask for a tour. If you are not cheerfully given a tour you should not consider leaving your pet.
You must see where your pet is going live while you are away. You should be able to see where the dogs/cats are kept. If there are outside facilities such as play yards you should see them as well.
Look at the pets who are in board. Do they look comfortable ?
What are the cages made of? Are enclosures made of a material that is safe? There should never be loose, sharp or sagging wire present. It poses the hazard of injury.
* How does the facility smell? Is it clean? Is it well ventilated and lighted?
* Is the facility secure?
* Are the facilities air conditioned? Heated in the winter & cooled in the summer?
* What is furnished for the pets to sleep on?
* What times are they taken out for potty breaks ?
* Are they given the opportunity to socialize/play/exercise? If so, how often? (activities & exercise help ward off stress issues)
* What kind of food is fed if you don’t supply your own?
* What kind of food dishes and water containers are used?
* How often are the individual pet's quarters cleaned?
* Do they monitor food intake and bowel & urinary functions?
* When is there someone at the facility?
* During week-ends & holidays, if their office, is closed when do they come in to care for the pets?
* What is their procedure if your pet becomes ill while in board?
Ask the staff questions about concerns you may have. No matter how minor your inquiry may be. If something is important to you then it should be important to the staff. You should feel confident in the place that you're leaving your pet.
