Happy 1st Day of Summer! ☀️
Try to keep pets inside, in cool, well ventilated areas. If outside, provide shade (note: shade will change during the day). Provide pets with lots of water. Some breeds, species, and pets with chronic conditions are more susceptible to heat stroke.

Lets talk signs of a heat stroke 🥵:

💦 Excessive drool/ panting
🤕 Restlessness/ confusion
😮‍💨 Trouble breathing
👅 Red gums/ tongue
😴 Lethargy

We share our area with many species of wildlife. But there is one in particular that gets our pets in prickly situations. We see many pets that suffer from porcupine encounters. While the species is not aggressive, they do feel threatened when approached. They will turn away from their aggressor with erect quills and slash with their tails.

The quills themselves are barb-like. They tend to move inwards, deeper in the tissue. It is important to bring your pet in if they have quills. Do not try to remove them yourself! Not only is it very painful, but quills can be cause for infection as well.

The best thing to do is to try to avoid the situation. Keep your pet on a leash when hiking or walking. Also do not allow your pet to run free at any time, but especially night. 🐾

We offer a few injectable options for osteoarthritis. The first one is Adequan! Adequan slows the progression of osteoarthritis by helping the joints heal damaged cartilage and create lubrication. All while helping reduce inflammation. It is a twice weekly injection for 4 weeks. The treatment usually has to be repeated every 6-12 months. Ask your vet if your pet is a good candidate for Adequan today! 💉

Let's talk NSAIDs! NSAIDs stands for non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They are a prescription option for osteoarthritis pain management that we provide. They provide relief by blocking pain pathways. We use pre-screening bloodwork to make sure this is a good option for your pet. We also regularly monitor bloodwork for side effects. 💊

Curious on how our lyme vaccination works? Your pet will need one initial shot, then a booster 4 weeks after. After that it will be a yearly vaccination. This will provide tick protection year round in ADDITION to year round flea/tick preventative. 💉🐶

Let's talk statistics so far for 2024 Heartworm Disease in Dogs and Cats! 📊

🐶Only 1% of dogs that tested for heartworm were postitive. Which equals out 30,552 positive out of 3,084,374.

🐱 Cat statistics are a little different due to testing. Cats are not a usual host for heartworm so we usually do not see adult heartworms. Most times AB testing is used, which is short for antibody testing. This test can detect larvae. While AG testing is short for antigen testing. This test is used to detect adult heartworms. Only 0.3% of cats were AG postive and 0.5% of cats were AB positive.

🔴In Maryland 1 in 20 dogs have tested positive for lyme disease. In Garrett County 1 in 4 dogs have tested positive. In Allegany County 1 in 6 have tested positive.

🔵In Pennsylvania 1 in 11 dogs have tested positive for lyme disease. In Somerset County 1 in 5 dogs have tested positive. In Bedford County 1 in 6 have tested positive.

🟢In West Virginia 1 in 6 dogs have tested positive for lyme disease. In Mineral County 2 in 5 have tested positive. In Preston County 1 in 4 have tested positive.

Exposure to common lilies such as Easter lilies, tiger lilies and stargazer lilies sicken and kill thousands of cats annually.
