Be careful out there!

For folks who like to run their dogs at Timber Creek Pooch Park, be advised: Camden County Government has identified a harmful algal bloom in the waterway. Health officials are asking everyone to keep their dogs out of the water until it can be cleaned up.

According to the county, tests from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection confirmed the presence of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, which can produce toxins that are deadly to animals. Cleanup efforts are being devised.

Anyone with questions about cyanobacterial toxin poisoning should call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

We’ve had questions about how to keep pets safe in poor air quality. The same general advice that applies to humans applies to pets—when the air quality is poor, limit outdoor exposure. That may mean avoiding walks and taking your dog out only to pee/poo and keeping indoor/outdoor cats indoors. You can also wipe down their paws and fur with a damp cloth after being outdoors (the pollutants can irritate the eyes in addition to the airways.) Indoors, keep windows closed and if possible keep air circulating with fans and air conditioning. Pets with underlying respiratory conditions and dogs with short noses—pugs, bull dogs, shih tzus, etc. may be at higher risk. Call the vet if you notice any difficulty breathing or excessive coughing.
