Asking your veterinarian office to schedule a nail trim is not always the best choice for a few reasons:

1. Cost:
Veterinary services can be expensive, and nail trims are generally something that can be done at home or by a groomer at a lower cost.
2. Time and Efficiency:
Veterinary clinics are busy with more critical medical procedures and consultations. Asking them to handle routine tasks like nail trims takes time away from these important duties.
3. Specialization:
Professional groomers are specifically trained for tasks like nail trimming. They usually have the experience and tools needed to make the process quick and stress-free for your pet.
4. Stress:
Visiting the vet can be stressful for pets, especially if they are not used to being handled outside of medical situations. It is better if your dog does not associate the "trauma" of a nail trim with the vet's office. A groomer or doing it at home might be less stressful for your pet.
5. Routine Maintenance:
Regular nail trims are a part of ongoing pet care. Groomers or at-home maintenance can be more suitable for routine tasks, leaving vets to focus on medical care.

That said, if your pet has a medical condition that affects their nails or if they need to be sedated for a nail trim, the veterinary office is absolutely appropriate.

To our clients:
Don't worry........We will still do nail trims if your pet is here for an appointment or surgery, but we are phasing out of scheduling JUST routine nail trims.

We are more than happy to recommend a local groomer to you!

It’s Veterinary Assistant week! We will take time everyday this week to highlight one of our awesome vet assistants. Of course we have to start with the “goat” of our veterinary assistant staff, Debbie. She has been with our clinic for over 45 years!! (We quit counting)
Happy vet assistant week, Deb, and thank you for your unmatched dedication to West Side Animal Clinic!

UMMM....it is TOO HOT outside!! Do NOT take your dog for a walk today (or for the next several days). They should only be going outside long enough to do their business and then right back inside. If you are in need of help in this heat, there are multiple "cooling centers" offered around town too. Please stay safe!

Woo hoo!! Our first TNR(trap, neuter, return)
Day was a success. Our staff was split into multiple teams to make today go smoothly -from intake to release. We had a much deserved parking lot lunch and celebration afterwards.

Dog Training for New Parents

Cribs and Canines – a practical, reward-based training protocol for both dogs and their owners, who are or are soon-to-be-parents! We understand that a new baby can cause new inconsistencies in a person’s AND dog’s normal routines and daily life schedules. We want to make sure that both human and dog can make their own personal transition with a new baby as pleasant and comfortable as possible.

UPDATE:
We have reached our limit!

We greatly appreciate your honesty in registering your "own loving cat that you've had for years". Please understand that your registration will be declined. Please use your personal veterinary office or UCan to get your pets spayed or neutered. This TNR day is for the stray cat population control. We are not funded in any way for this . We are volunteering our time and expertise, doing this as a community service, and only asking for $25.00 to HELP cover the cost of anesthesia, vaccines, pain and antibiotic injections.

This past week, Dr. Galen Heyne took his own life, leaving behind a wife and 2 VERY small children, whom he loved deeply. He battled the demons that we all deal with in veterinary medicine, and unfortunately lost that battle.

This is why - Not One More Vet, Inc, exists. Our profession is 2-3x more likely to die by su***de than the general population, and we are dying left and right. Many who manage to survive their battle end up burning out and leave the profession entirely. These two things are the biggest reasons our profession is facing an unprecedented staffing crisis, why we no longer can offer on-call or after hours services, why we can no longer take on new patients or new clients — because we are dying and leaving in droves.

Please be kind and compassionate to the people who give their all to a profession that most of us have wanted to do since we were the age of Galen’s children, and often for little pay or reward. Please consider financially helping his devastated, struggling family, and keep them in your prayers:

We wanted to take the opportunity to answer some of the questions we have been getting pertaining to our upcoming TNR day. Hopefully this answers questions you may have as well!

1. Do the cats HAVE to be in a trap?
a: YES. We are not taking a chance on our doctors, staff, or volunteers getting bit, possibly needing medical attention, NOR do we want to deal with a 10 day rabies quarantine situation with unvaccinated cats.

2. Will we fix stray KITTENS?
a: We would prefer that they be over 4 #. We will be weighing cats before taking them in- especially younger kittens.

3. Do we HAVE to "tip" their ear?
a: YES, we will be tipping the ear of each and every cat we fix.

4. Will we spay pregnant cats?
a: YES. If a female is brought in and it is discovered that she is pregnant, we will still spay her. (pregnancy is therefore terminated)

5. How many cats can I bring in?
a: Since this is our first time doing a TNR clinic, we will need to limit the number of cats we take in. We want to make it fair for everyone, whether you "take care of a colony" or just have a neighborhood cat that is having litter after litter. Stay tuned as we find out through online registration how many we are limiting it to.

6. When will I need to come back to pick the cat up?
a: We are releasing cats between 3:00-4:30pm. If your cat is done and ready sooner, we will call you.

If you have a different question, please comment below!
PS- we could use donations of newspapers and sheets for this TNR project!

We are excited to announce our first TNR day! (Trap/Neuter/Return)
Our doctors and staff members are volunteering their expertise and time to help get our community's cat colonies under control. Do you have a stray hanging around and adding to your neighborhood's cat population? Do you help feed and care for a cat colony? Let's get them spayed and neutered! Borrow a trap (details in the notice) and bring them in! There will be more info to follow, as we are still working on our online registration for this day, but let's go ahead and spread the news...... Stay tuned !
