New River had the pleasure of taking care of K9 Officer Supra, of the Beaufort County Police Department. 🐾

Supra presented to NRVS for a possible GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus). Officer Wiren noted that Supra had an acute onset of excessive panting, non productive retching (trying to vomit), drooling and abdominal distention. Officer Wiren acted quickly, as these are common signs of a GDV, which is a serious and life threatening situation! Thankfully, after performing abdominal radiographs, it was confirmed that Supra did not have a GDV, but just a mild case of gastroenteritis. Supra was able to go home for continued monitoring and sent home with anti nausea and pain medication to help the gastroenteritis.

What is GDV? GDV stands for Gastric Dilatation-Volvus. GDV is a very serious life threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention and surgical intervention. The condition is commonly associated with rapid ingestion of large meals and stress. There are also certain breeds of dogs that are at a higher risk of GDV due to their lean body condition and deep and narrow chest confirmation. These breeds include Great Danes, German Shepherds, Irish Setters, Weimaraner's, Saint Bernard's, Standard Poodles, and Bassett Hounds.

When a GDV occurs, the presence of food and gas causes the stomach to significantly dilate and expand, which then leads to severe consequences including:
- prevention of adequate blood return to the heart from the abdomen
- loss of blood flow to the lining of the stomach
- rupture of the stomach wall
- pressure on the diaphragm preventing the lungs from adequately expanding leading to decreased ability to maintain normal breathing

Common Signs of GDV Include:
- An anxious look or looking at the abdomen
- Standing and stretching
- Drooling
- Distended abdomen
- Retching without producing anything

If you are concerned that your dog may have a GDV, veterinary care is needed immediately! Your dog should be taken to an emergency hospital for immediate treatment and surgical intervention. NRVS is fully equipped to handle GDV's and any other emergency that may happen to your pet!

07/10/2024

☀️With Summer in full swing, temperatures are increasing! In the last two weeks NRVS has seen a number of heat stroke cases! Dogs can suffer heat stroke if the humidity is high, even if it is not “hot” outside! Humidity matters too!☀️

Dogs cool their body temperatures through panting. Panting cools through respiratory tract evaporation. If it is humid outside, dogs struggle to cool off by panting. Older dogs, heavy coated breeds, brachycephalic dogs (eg. Pugs, Boston Terriers, Bulldogs etc), and dogs with airway disease (eg. laryngeal paralysis) are at increased risk of heat stroke. Cats rarely present with heat stroke.

A dog should never be left inside a parked car when it’s warm. A car parked in the sun can reach 120°F within 7 minutes even with the window rolled down! Heat stroke can be fatal within minutes.

➡️Signs of heat stroke – dry, dark pink to red mucus membranes in the mouth, weakness or uncoordinated walking, vomiting or diarrhea, and seizures. Often the vomitus or stool contains blood and bruising of the skin and gums can be seen.

➡️ If you suspect that your dog has heat stroke, take a re**al temperature with a thermometer. Heat stroke is a concern when re**al temperatures are over 106°F (normal temperature in dogs is 101-102.2°F).

💦 If the temperature is high, immediately start to cool your dog with lukewarm water. Avoid ice or cold water! Use a fan to blow air on their wet fur to help cool by convection. Monitor body temperature while cooling and on the way to the vet hospital to avoid lowering the temperature below 103 F.

🚐 Drive to the nearest veterinarian immediately - immediate emergency care can mean the difference between life and death.

✅ Animals are treated immediately with IV fluids to continue active cooling and restore hydration.
✅ Immediate blood work is completed to evaluate for damage to the kidneys and blood clotting systems.
✅ ECG is monitored to evaluate for heart muscle damage.
✅ A neurologic examination is completed monitoring for brain injury and seizures.
✅ The gastrointestinal tract is damaged directly by heat. Ulcer therapy and antibiotics are administered for treatment and to prevent secondary bacterial infections.

🏥 Patients with heat stroke are often hospitalized for 48 to 72 hours or longer depending on the extent of damage to the kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, blood clotting system, and neurologic system.

With aggressive and immediate emergency medical therapy, many dogs with heat stroke survive and live a normal lifespan.
