Part 2: Holiday Plants Dangerous to Pets

Festive greenery is beautiful, but some holiday plants can pose a risk to your pets. Keep these plants in mind when decorating:
1. Poinsettias: While not as deadly as once thought, they can cause mild irritation and drooling if ingested.
2. Mistletoe: Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, heart issues.
3. Holly: Berries and leaves are toxic, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.
4. Lilies: Extremely toxic to cats, even small amounts can cause kidney failure.
5. Christmas Trees (real and artificial): Pine needles can irritate the mouth and stomach, while stagnant tree water may contain harmful bacteria or fertilizers.
6. Amaryllis: This plant’s bulbs are highly toxic, causing vomiting, abdominal pain, and tremors.

Decorate with care, and opt for pet-safe alternatives if possible. Your veterinarian or local pet poison helpline can help if you have concerns. Let’s keep the holidays merry and safe for everyone!

Today and Saturday we are doing a 2 part informative post on things to avoid for your pets during the holidays.

Part 1: Christmas Foods Dangerous to Pets

The holiday season is filled with delicious treats, but not all of them are safe for our furry friends. Here’s a list of common Christmas foods that can be harmful to pets:
1. Chocolate: Contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous.
2. Grapes and Raisins: Found in holiday fruitcakes and cookies, they can cause kidney failure in dogs.
3. Xylitol: A sugar substitute in some baked goods, candy, and gum that can lead to severe hypoglycemia and liver failure in dogs.
4. Fatty Meats and Bones: Leftovers like ham or turkey bones can cause pancreatitis or splinter, leading to internal injuries.
5. Onions, Garlic, and Chives: Common in stuffing and gravies, they can damage red blood cells and cause anemia in pets.
6. Alcohol: Even small amounts can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, and even coma in pets.

If you suspect your pet has consumed something harmful, contact your veterinarian immediately. Prevention is key—keep those holiday goodies out of paw’s reach!

Holiday Tree Safety Tips for Pet Owners

At Hillcrest-Flynn, we know how much your furry family members mean to you. The holidays are a magical time, but holiday decorations—especially Christmas trees—can pose unique hazards for pets. Keep your pets safe and your holiday stress-free with these tree safety tips.

1. Secure Your Tree

Pets love to climb, nudge, and explore. Anchor your tree securely to prevent it from tipping over if your curious cat or playful pup decides to investigate. Consider using a sturdy tree stand and tying the top to a nearby wall or ceiling.

2. Skip the Tinsel

Tinsel can be irresistible to pets, especially cats, but it’s a choking hazard and can cause serious intestinal issues if ingested. Avoid using it or opt for pet-safe alternatives.

3. Choose Pet-Friendly Ornaments

• Hang breakable or valuable ornaments higher up where pets can’t reach.
• Avoid edible decorations like popcorn strings or candy canes, which can attract unwanted nibbling.
• Use shatterproof ornaments on the lower branches.

4. Mind the Water

Tree water can contain fertilizers, bacteria, or preservatives that are toxic to pets. Cover the water reservoir with a tree skirt or aluminum foil to keep your pets from drinking it.

5. Check Your Lights

• Keep light cords out of reach, as chewing on them can lead to electrical shocks.
• Use cord protectors or tape them securely to the floor or wall.
• Opt for battery-operated lights if possible.

6. Watch Out for Pine Needles

For real trees, fallen needles can be dangerous if ingested, causing mouth irritation or internal damage. Vacuum around the tree regularly to keep the area clear.

7. Supervise Your Pets

If your pets are especially curious, consider placing a baby gate or pet barrier around the tree when you’re not able to supervise.

Celebrate with Peace of Mind

The holidays are a time to enjoy with your loved ones—pets included. By taking these precautions, you can create a festive home that’s safe for every member of your family.

Bugsy Buckner

Born -October 2012 in Hartford Township, OH

Crossed the Rainbow Bridge - November 17 at 10:30 p.m.

When we bought our previously abandoned home in Hartford Township way back in 2007, we had no idea that ti came complete with a feral cat colony that had been living inside it for quite some time. Being animal lovers, and having three kitties of our own when we moved in...we had to learn as much as possible in a very short time - about how to humanely care for and love this feral colony...now displaced on our property.
So we bought a shed and converted it into a heated home for these babies...and eventually learned about TNR. Iwent out to the shed every morning and fed them all...not a day went by they went without. But prior to that, we identified three main mamas (Licorice, Calico and Mama)... who had litter after litter of kittens...and boy did we have our hands full! We found loving new homes for many of them, and our indoor house of
three kitties quickly became a full time home, nursery and hospital to a dozen kitties. We did the best we could with the hand we were dealt, and if love would have saved them all...well, every single one of them would be right with us today.

On Calico's last litter before she got TNR'd...most all of her kittens were adopted quickly as they were adorable. But sadly one last little sickly kitten (our dear Bugsy) was left unwanted in the corner of the shed. My husband John immediately took to Bugsy, and catered to her day and night. Calico adored this little angel and so we took her inside to live with us permanently. Best decision we ever made. She was named "Bugsy" because she had the most vibrant beautiful green eyes we had ever seen!! They just "bugged out" at you when you looked at her, she was beautiful. And she had a heart of gold. It's kitties like Bugsy who keep you going, let me tell you.
Fast forward twelve amazing years! Bugsy was the best baby in the world, very laid back and sweet...she was never aggressive
or mean to any of the other kitties. She was an angel, and she chose my husband John...as her person. She remained by John's side as his faithful sidekick, through his own bout with lung cancer - she never left his side. Until the bitter end last
evening.
Earlier this year Bugsy developed lumps on the side of her shoulder. We took her to the vet and were told it was a very aggressive form of lymphoma...but they could remove it with
surgery and hopefully get it al. Bugsy recovered quickly after her surgery and thoroughly enjoyed the next few months of her life. She was feeling SO good! But sadly, there were no guarantees with this lymphoma...and when she stopped eating and drinking last week....we knew something was very wrong.
We promised her we'd take her to the vet first thing this morning. But things progressed os quickly over the weekend, and she passed last night at 10:30 p.m. It was a very very sad night for all of us. It was comforting that she was right with her family, in her own familiar bed...and it happened relatively quickly.
The moral to Bugsy's story is never judge a book by it's cover. Although she may not have ever been the "pick of the litter" in looks...she so FAR surpassed in personality anything that a "pretty kitty" could do. She was the absolute BEST! For twelve solid years, she never caused us a moment's grief and was such a joy to be with. And we will miss her every single day. Thank you Bugsy, it was an honor and privilege to have been loved by you. We will never forget you...and I hope to see you again one day in Heaven.
In retrospect, our house full of kittens back in the early 2000's is now down to five remaining angels. Icannot thank Matt Record enough...for always being there for us during these extremely
difficult times. Matt si a godsend! Matt, you've gotten us through the passing of Jezzabel, Mufy, P***y, Grey Bear, Bufy and now our sweet Bugsy. We can't tell you how you put our hearts at ease. Just knowing we can always depend on Matt and Hillcrest...has helped us help these sweet babies. Thank you Matt.
Heaven has another angel...rest in peace my sweet Bugsy.

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and, of course, delicious food—but not all of our holiday favorites are safe for our four-legged friends. As you prepare your feast, here are some foods to avoid sharing with your pets:
• Turkey Bones: Cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or digestive injuries.
• Stuffing & Gravy: Often seasoned with garlic, onions, or other spices that are toxic to pets.
• Chocolate Desserts: Even small amounts of chocolate can be dangerous, especially for dogs.
• Fatty Foods: Rich foods like butter, skin, or drippings can upset their stomach or cause pancreatitis.
• Alcohol: Never give your pet alcoholic beverages or foods made with alcohol.

Halloween is here, and while treats are fun for us, they can be dangerous for our furry friends! Candy, especially chocolate and sugar-free treats containing xylitol, can be toxic to pets. Even small amounts can lead to serious health issues. Keep candy out of reach, watch out for wrappers that can be choking hazards, and remind kids not to share their goodies with pets. If your pet does get into something they shouldn’t, contact your vet immediately. Have a safe and happy Halloween for all members of the family, furry or not! 🐾🎃
