It's Puppy Season! I see a lot of people getting puppies this time of year. Here are some often overlooked facts about getting a puppy. They are adorable, but they are a TON of work, time & commitment that I often see people forget to consider and the puppy suffers.

If you or your family work full-time out of the home, I always recommend considering rescuing a dog 2+ years or older.. trust me! They are easier for a busy family or individual to train. PLUS! There are so many deserving dogs in rescues/shelters that are looking for a comfy home like yours. I've seen firsthand so many puppies that come from breeders who practice inhumane care. Please always try to look at rescue/shelters first and remember ALL pups need some training!

I've been coaching Bean's foster family to help teach him the puppy ropes! He's doing great. He is very smart and lovable. I got a chance to hang & train with him yesterday!! Lots of snowy fun! He only deserves the best home ❤ He's great with other dogs, especially dogs who love to run & play!!

Meet handsome Clover! This cutie is a sweet and calm dog, but in recent months has started to exhibit resource guarding of different items. Something of concern to his parents, especially since they have young children. Resource Guarding is a behavior dog's instinctually have carried with them from their ancestors. When they had to fend for themselves outdoors, protecting items they considered high-value was a way of survival. Our domesticated pups, can often show this behavior as well as a symptom of anxiety or feeling like they need to protect their high value items. Often just one small interaction where an item is taken unwillingly from a pup can cause this behavior to crop up. Rough house play can also trigger this behavior. Luckily, in most cases, this is treatable by practicing a few different exercises with your dog each day to help them feel more comfortable with you being near or needing to take items from them. NEVER pull an item from a dog's mouth if they are unwilling to give it up. This can trigger this behavior.

I shared some tips and exercises with Clover's parents to start practicing right away and with lots of repetition, his family should see him become less and less protective of items.

-Make sure your pups are up to date on vaccinations. See what your vet suggests.

-If visiting family with dogs, check in to see if the dogs are well or consider not traveling with your dog if possible

Meet sweet sisters Hope & Zoe! These cuties are full of energy, especially Zoe since she's still a puppy. I worked with their family on some exercises to tame their young pup energy and worked on some very typical puppy behaviors! I look forward to our next session where we'll work on Leash Training! All pups need a bit of help to develop manners & focus on leash.

These adorable puppies are on their way from kill shelters in TX & SC to Castle of Dreams Animal Rescue in Cliftwood, NJ. The animal rescue world is in a very sad state. Too many animals being surrendered at shelters and not enough people stepping up to foster or adopt.

If you are able to foster or interested in adopting a puppy or dog, please reach out to Castle of Dreams. Please always consider adopting before buying from a breeder. Very very often breeders are inhumane and these poor animals also end up in kill shelters.

Each of these items serve a very important part of training your new puppy. Let me help you navigate the often complex (and frustrating) stage of Puppyhood!! All dogs need training to be the best pups they can be ❤ 🐾

Meet adorable Salty!! This cutie is almost 5 months old and the sweetest puppy! I have been working with her and her mom on House Training, Impulse Control, Basic Obedience, and more. All the things that puppies need to set them on the right track to be well mannered adult dogs!! I love working with puppies and their families, it's so fun to teach the little ones how to be well mannered pups!

You can start training a puppy as young as 8 weeks old! The younger you start the better. You can prevent typical puppy antics! Even if your puppy is older, it's never to late to start working on their training. All dogs need some training help!
