If your pet is sensitive to noise, now is the time to start preparing the Oregon International Air Show taking place May 17-19 at the Hillsboro Airport.

Loud planes and unusual noises may cause pets to panic and escape from their enclosures or to bolt away from their owners.

Even pets that have never seemed bothered by loud noises before can develop new fears.

Tips for keeping your pets safe and secure:

• If you think your pet might fear loud noises, call your veterinarian TODAY to discuss medication or other options for reducing your pet’s fear. Doing this now is also good planning for upcoming Fourth of July fireworks!

• Verify that your pet’s ID tag and microchip have current and updated information, and that your dog is licensed. Double-check that their collar fits well and that any tags are securely attached. If you pet needs an ID tag, many pet supply stores offer in-store pet tag engraving. If your pup needs a dog license tag, we are open Monday through Saturday for in-person dog licensing.

• Check your fence and gates. Are there loose or warped boards? Are there spots where your dog or another critter has started to tunnel near the fence? Is the gate closed and latched, and does the gate stay latched? We recommend keeping your dog on a leash for their potty breaks if loud noises are a concern, even in your own backyard.

• Pick a room in your home that can provide a safe space for your pet. Help your pet become comfortable in this space now. You want them to associate the room with good things like treats, cuddles and their favorite bedding. Consider adding soft music, talk radio or white noise to the room.

If you find a stray animal or your own pet goes missing, check our website at www.WashingtonCountyPets.com for lost and found pet resources.

Thank you for helping us keep the animals in our community safe at home!

Another FYI
As you may have seen on local news sources lately, there has been an increase in dogs presenting with infectious respiratory diseases in our area. Unfortunately, it is not currently known what the underlying cause of these cases has been since these patients are testing negative on available upper respiratory panels, and do not respond to typical treatments.

It does appear that this respiratory disease is highly contagious from contact with other dogs and is not preventable with currently available vaccines. Therefore, the best way to avoid the risk to your dog is to avoid contact with other dogs. This includes going to dog parks, daycare, and boarding facilities.

Symptoms of respiratory disease in dogs include coughing, sneezing, and nasal or eye discharge. It is especially concerning if your pet is also lethargic or has a decreased appetite. If your pet is exhibiting any of these symptoms, we recommend having your pet examined by a veterinarian.

FYI, very scary stuff. This was posted on my NextDoor page.

My friend lost two of his dogs last week 2 days apart. The vet has no idea why.

PAY ATTENTION PEOPLE AND PEOPLE WITH ANIMALS!! This is NOT in the news and it has been posted all over since yesterday that this is happening but unless you run across it YOU WILL NOT EVEN KNOW. So FYI..... PLEASE READ THIS.
BIRDS ARE DYING ALL AROUND HILLSBORO.

From the Brookwood library: “If you have patrons ask you what we are doing about the sick/dead birds around the ponds behind the library, we have posted information around the library and on signs near the ponds. There is an outbreak of Avian Influenza among the migrating waterfowl. It is widespread all along the Pacific flyway. We are seeing it here in Hillsboro and most recently also at Fernhill in Forest Grove, and I imagine at Jackson Bottom, as the migrating birds stop over on their way south. This highly contagious bird flu has no cure for the birds, once you see them sick it is too late. No, Audubon will NOT take them, nor will any vet. The disease shows no symptoms until the end, when the bird is acting sick it's already too late.

Here's what you need to know:

If you walk the paths around the ponds, DO NOT pick up any sick or dying birds.
Wash the soles of your shoes off when you are done walking the path.
Right now, you should avoid walking your dog on the paths, if you do, don't let them sniff, roll on, or carry around a dead bird. The disease is highly contagious around birds, but has been known to cause illness in mammals. If you do walk your dog on the paths, be sure to wash their feet well, so they don't lick their paws.
If you have neighbors who have backyard chickens, ducks, or geese, do not wear the shoes you walk the paths on, around those birds. Domestic fowl are very much in danger from this bird flu.
Fish and Wildlife, the Department of Agriculture, AND the Dawson Creek Business Park management has been made aware of the situation. I was on the phone with all of them Tuesday and Wednesday.
We've posted information in the library and on the signage near the ponds. For patrons who demand that the library do something, Dawson Creek is NOT a city park, we have no jurisdiction, nor does the City of Hillsboro. The number for Fish and Wildlife is on the signage. Fish and wildlife are getting a press release out this week.
Birds in the area have been tested by Fish and Wildlife and yes, it is Avian flu. It will be an issue for at least this month as the migrating birds go through the area. It's sad, I know, but it's kind of out of our control (human wise)....there is no cure, and there will be loss of life among the birds. So far, I've noticed the cackling geese (look like juvenile Canada geese) and the merganser ducks being the ones sick or dead. “

FYI
08/25/2023

FYI

There is a scam targeting people whose pets have gone missing. The scammers contact the owners of the lost pets and pretend to be from an animal shelter or Animal Services agency. They then tell the owners that they will need to pay before they can pick up their animals at the shelter. These scammers don’t work for an animal shelter and never had the lost pets.

Please be wary of anyone who claims to be contacting you from our shelter or any animal-related organization with a request for immediate payment to return your lost pet to you or to hold the animal at the shelter.

If your pet is located at our shelter and there are fees involved, you can pay in person at the shelter when you pick them up.

You can view stray animals located at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter, learn more about reclaiming a lost animal, and find additional lost pet resources at https://www.washingtoncountyor.gov/animal-services/lost-and-found-pets.

FYI, be aware .

Lost pet scam alert! We have learned about a scam targeting owners of lost pets in our community. The scammer contacts the owner of the lost pet, identifies themselves as a Washington County Animal Services officer or Bonnie Hays staff member, and then asks for payment over the phone for something related to the animal. It could be vet fees, a fee to pick up or drop off the animal, or another type of fee. They may ask for this payment via gift cards, which we will never do.

These types of scams pop up on social media in many different communities and prey on people who care about animals. Please be wary of anyone who claims to be contacting you from our shelter or any animal-related organization with a request for immediate payment to return your lost pet to you or to hold the animal at the shelter. It’s possible that your cell phone may show a call is coming from “Animal Services” when it is NOT actually coming from us.

If your lost pet is located at our shelter and there are any fees involved, you can pay in person at the shelter when you pick up your pet.

Find a link to view stray animals located at the shelter, information on how to reclaim a lost pet from us, and other lost pet resources at https://www.washingtoncountyor.gov/animal-services/lost-and-found-pets.

Nice weather in the forecast is likely to inspire many people to be out and about with their dogs this weekend!

If you plan to venture out to parks and other public places with your furry friend in the coming days, help keep people and other animals safe by following these Washington County requirements:

* Keep your dog on a leash seven feet or shorter when not in a designated off-leash area. Your dog may be friendly, but people may be uncomfortable with a loose dog in their space. Additionally, some leashed dogs are reactive to unleashed dogs approaching them.

* Clean up after your pet. Pet waste is unpleasant to step in and can contain parasites or bacteria that can be harmful to both animals and people. Be sure to scoop that p**p and put it in a garbage can. Pet waste should never be tossed into a storm drain, recycling bin, or compost pile that is not specifically set up for animal waste.

* Keep your dog’s license current. All dogs six months and older must be licensed in Washington County, and a current rabies vaccine is required for the license to be valid. You can license your dog in person, online, by mail or over the phone. Check our website or call us at 503-846-7041 for information.

Thank you for being a kind and responsible dog owner while enjoying Washington County!
