Down With Dogmatism – A Bird’s Eye View

Dogmatism is the tendency to lay down principles as true, without consideration of evidence or the opinions of others. To be dogmatic is to hold onto a view no matter what. “Never” and “always” are often followed by dogmatism.

Animals communicate their evidence and opinions with their body language. They approach or retreat. They relax or contract their muscles, which changes their hair or feathers. Their eyes have a soft focus or a fixed stare. Every movement broadcasting information.

One caregiver skill is to observe our animals’ nuanced behavior precisely. Another is to interpret their behavior in context accurately. But the most important skill of all is to be dynamically influenced by our animals’ behavior. Let them help us improve what we do.
