Hurricane season is here and breeding season has begun!!! Be sure to keep our number handy!!! If you find a baby parrot that seems like it’s either hurt or endangered give us a call! So many rescues and wildlife centers drill into people that if it’s a “fledgling” leave it alone!!! And that’s true to some extent. Do you know the difference between a fledgling and a nestling (a younger baby)? Fledglings are fully feathered! They have their flight and tail feathers. Nestlings are not fully feathered.
We received a call yesterday from a woman that found a fledgling. At first I told her to leave it alone and that the parents would still be taking care of it…well then a video followed showing this baby literally stuck in a fence by its neck. After a few minutes it was able to squirm out but it left the baby’s leg and wing injured. So, I instructed her to get the baby to safety and I went and picked him up. IF THE BABY IS INJURED OR AT RISK ALWAYS BRING IT TO SAFETY!
And did you know that if you release or re-release a non-native parrot in Florida there is the real danger of getting hit with a $10,000.00 fine??? And right now people have either started hurricane trimming their trees or they are about to. In most cases the landscapers, tree trimmers and contractors don’t want to risk the fine and feel they have no other choice but to kill the babies. Don’t let these wild birds and babies be killed. Find out what services we have set up for these parrots. Life is always better than the alternative. We will come and pick them up! We will hand feed them and depending upon their tameness and age they will either become someone’s pampered pet or they will live their lives out in large aviaries with birds of their own kind. These aviaries replicate their environment in he wild but they are provided food and enrichment and no longer have to hunt for them.
AND ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WHO YOU CONFIDE IN ABOUT A WILD NEST!!! THERE ARE POACHERS OUT THERE THAT ARE NO BETTER THAN HEAD HUNTERS! SINCE TAKING IN THE BABY MENTIONED ABOVE…I’VE HAD 3 POACHERS ASK WHERE THE NEST IS AND TWO IF THEM GOT REALLY NASTY ABOUT IT! I refuse to tell them and they aren’t happy about it. They are half the reason diseases are spreading among our parrots…and many of the birds die due to the way they are handled by these people. They are unscrupulous!
Saving these lives is free. So, there will be no out of pocket cost to the finder!!!!!
