Exploring Reactivity in Dogs
Reactivity in dogs is a common challenge, and as trainers, we often field questions about how to address it effectively. Today, we want to share our journey with Poco, a pup who's selectively reactive around other dogs.
Imagine your dog dealing with reactivity, and you're wondering where to begin. One strategy is to select a low-stress environment, like a grocery store parking lot. Here, you can gradually expose your dog to distant canine encounters while keeping their attention without triggering reactive behavior. 🎯
Once your pup masters this, it's time to level up! Progress to locations near dog parks or areas with off-leash dogs. Start from across the street, but can still notice other dogs around. Your dog will acknowledge other dogs, especially if they're playing. The goal? Find the perfect distance where your furry friend can still focus on you. 🐶👀
Take the next step! Move closer, perhaps to the sidewalk adjacent to the dog park. If your dog maintains their attention on you, you're making strides! 👏
Patience is paramount. If your dog reaches a point where they can't focus on you and reactive behavior surfaces, step back and allow them space. The aim is to redirect their attention to you, not rehearse reactivity.
While this process may seem gradual, it's highly effective. The more you work with your dog in environments where they can concentrate on you, the faster they'll recover from reactive behavior. 🐾

Teaching 'leave it' can be easy with a treat-in-hand method. Watch as Shannon shows Vaughn a treat, asks him to 'leave it,' and rewards him when he stops mugging her hand. The hands go behind the back, and the process repeats. It's a convenient way to train 'leave it' while relaxing or spending time with family. Caution is advised not to create a habit of leaving hands always, as hands are often used to lure dogs. 🐾🍪

Today, Dana is dedicated to enhancing Griffin's mobility. Just like us humans, as dogs age, they start feeling the passage of time. Movement becomes more challenging, and those long-lasting bursts of energy become rarer. To better understand Griffin's challenges, we began with some on-land exercises before transitioning to the water treadmill.
As we continue working with Griffin and his Mom, our goal is to help him move more comfortably and become more in tune with his body's limitations at this stage of life.
