Everyone at Gale’s is thrilled to have these two talented equestrians back at Gale’s: Makayla Doan and family with their horse Skippy, and Abby Perry is back to ride Cheri (and we look forward to seeing her folks too!). Skippy has settled right in to his familiar home and Cheri was obviously glad to see Abby and gave her a blue ribbon ride tonight. Welcome back ladies!!!!!!
Congratulations goes to Miss Aubry Joki on the successful completion of her D-1 Horsemanship and Riding Certification with the United States Pony Club. Gale's Equine Facility is one of the newest licensed centers for the United States Pony Club and Aubry was our first participant to complete the requirements which included oral knowledge testing as well as riding testing. Riding testing can be done in dressage, hunt seat or western disciplines in the modern Pony Club...and adults can now participate as full members of the United States Pony Club, as well. Gale's Equine Facility will be continuing its focus on complete horsemanship education and is honored to be accepted by the USPC to represent this organization. See comments below for links to Gale's and the USPC. As a Center for the USPC, Gale's welcomes participation of horsepeople that have their own stable, or ride at other lesson facilities. You don't need to be a student at Gale's Equine Facility to be a part of the United States Pony Club.

The Gale's Show Team included several riders and horses that practiced, traveled to and show at the Twin Tiers Classic Horse Shows at the Chemung County Fairgrounds. I am proud of everyone - the riders - the "show support team" - and the horses who competed in very hot weather. The photos are of our youngest competitor, 3-year-old Anna Lerer, riding on lesson horse, Toby, in the lead line classes. Her trainer, Sarah Pulver, led her to take a first and a second place in her two show classes. Anna is going to be a very good horseperson and rider. We are delighted to have the Lerer family a part of our barn family!
Gale's Equine Facility is casually looking for weekend horse care help - mostly for late afternoons/early evenings - to include horse exercising, some stall cleanings, and turnouts of horses in the evenings. Ideally need experienced horse people that would love to ride some advanced horses as part of the horse exercising. Not every weekend required (but it would be nice). Would like to have two to three volunteers that would like to ride (english or western) and help out on a weekend or two during July and August. Also have two advanced horses available for summer leases. Please call 607-796-9821 or email me at [email protected].
Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.
2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…
3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..
4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.
5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...
6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.
7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.
8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.
9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.
Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

It's early Sunday morning, the day after our team's first horse show for the 2024 season. Yesterday, the Gale's team showed their horses at the English day of the Twin Tiers Classic Horse Shows at the Chemung County Fairgrounds, and I couldn't have been more pleased with our new little show team of young women, the youngest being only 3 years old! Truly many successes were achieved yesterday. I'm so proud of them.
I woke up this morning, believe it or not, thinking about the next horse show! I'm thinking that we will need more stalls. I'm thinking that we will show both days - English on Saturday and western on Sunday. I'm thinking of schooling the girls more for western dressage. So many thoughts!!! It is because of the awesome team of parents, grandparents, friends and riders that represented Gale's Equine Facility that made these past few days, a whole lot of fun. Many people don't know how much goes into getting ready for, going to, being at, packing back up to go home, and putting everything away....all while taking the best care of our lesson horses - some being pretty old (many thanks to Toby for being such a good horse - 27 years old - he knew his job for sure).
It was really nice catching up with Maggie Johnston too. (I ordered that product, btw, Maggie. We will give it a try!)
It was nice to chat with old clients, sometimes just a quick hello as we were scurrying in opposite directions.
It was my first time back at the Fairgrounds since the passing of a good friend, Randy Ring. It seemed so strange to see "his" barn all locked up. I took a moment, putting a hand on the building, and thought of Randy. He joins a long list of well-known horse people that helped the shows at the Fairgrounds over the years, and now have passed over the human rainbow. I'm sure they all watch down from above, with their heart horses, and are happy to see that we are still here, starting new riders and supporting the "experienced" riders.
Lastly - How about those volunteers that hosted and conducted the Twin Tiers Classic Horse Shows? - an incredible effort - always well done. Thank you TTCHS for hosting this series of shows and offering opportunities for our local riders to have a good experience and making good memories!
So... onward to the next month's show! Heels Down... Eyes Up and Happy Showing to All!

A fun "change up" for three good riders, (four if you count me). We turned First Level Test 1 into a quadrille. Except for "horses being horses" - the group did a nice job of doing this. First time for Lillian on Wonder....she kept right up with me. Renee on Frank and Natalie of Elizabeth did super as well. Fun to do!!! Made my brain work to think and ride the mirror image of all the movements.
Here is a video of a lesson at Gale’s at where we started introducing the skills for barrel racing, as we are becoming more involved with western riding. Gale is certified at Level 3 by the American Riding Instructor Association for teaching western and recreational riding lessons and has been for over 20 years. With the increased interest in western dressage, my clients are enjoying the cross training. Western Dressage is especially good for older horses and riders that prefer a slower, more relaxed pace.
At Gale's, we use our indoor arena for "turnouts" of our horses. This video, taken today, is of the "Old Guys", as we call them. The youngest, the white gelding, Ari, is coming up on 20 years of age on January 1st. Sylvester, the palomino will be 25, Toby, the paint, will check off 27 years of age, and the two "appaloosa's" Duncan (a bay with no spots) and Frosty will both be 32. In the horse world, we use January 1st as the birthdate for our equines, for determining their ages. We like using our indoor so that these old guys can play, roll, and run around on safe footing and out of the weather. We also have free choice hay in the arena area as well. Enjoy the horseplay....
Merry Christmas to all of you from all of us at Gale's Equine Facility. Enjoy our 2022 Drill Team performance. Riding this year: Kristie Clark on Dublin, Kelly Storch on Duncan, Kaitlyn Joki on Gabriel, Ellie French on Cheri, Kai Yeh on Ari, Aubry Joki on Toby, Logan Zurcher on Sylvester and Gale on Tequila. For three of the riders, this was the first time practicing this routine. They learned it tonight and then we all rode the routine to music. Great fun! I am so proud of all the riders who dedicated their time to practice and support the drill team...and thank you's go to the ground crew too.

The Tiny Trotters having another good lesson today. Many thanks to the Gale’s Gals that help me to run this program. We have a short wait list now to join the lesson. If there are cancellations, we can fill in the spots. Please PM for more info. As long as there is a demand and I have the help, we can run the program on Saturdays through June. During the summer, we would need to change times to avoid the hot afternoons. Some of the children will graduate into our regular riding program. Very pleased how this worked out.
Brrrr- it was cold outdoors today, but pleasant in our indoor arena for drill team practice. The team learned and performed one of the USDF Quadrille patterns, modified slightly to accommodate six riders. I'm very pleased with how well these riders - young and younger - work together as a team to have fun with this recreational activity. Good horses too!!!!!
Outdoors, with the wind, the temperatures feel like its below 0ºF, but it is still 30ºF in the indoor arena today, and we had a nice lesson group this morning of mixed riders. Here is a video of some snippets of this morning's lesson. Everyone is improving with their individual endeavors. That's me with my lovely warm green riding skirt (thank you Miek!) on Tequila. ~~~Gale January 29, 2022
So proud of these two.... Makayla Doan and her Arabian gelding, Valor CFA (aka Skippy) rode their first dressage test tonight. It was a great opportunity to check in on our training of this nice young horse. Makayla has been so patient with this young colt and she's learning how to correctly, and classically educate Skippy to be a nice all-around sport horse. Our dressage arena has been set up inside of the indoor arena so that students can compete in the Dressage Show On-Line event sponsored by the Cayuga Dressage & Combined Training Association.
Today's drill team practice. Lots of fun with eight riders. Thank you all who came out to watch today. We enjoyed the applause.
Having fun during tonight’s jump lesson. Smokey and Makayla schooling a three foot oxer and I’m especially pleased that he is being so good in a snaffle bit now. Perfect practice makes perfect and it’s all about the dressage between the fences. Great work Makayla!!!
Lucy Theetge navigates Dublin, for the first time over the natural fences as she practices for her first horse trials event in Geneseo in a couple weeks. The girls learned their required dressage test tonight and then were treated to trying out the big log jumps. Looking forward to watching this pair continue to improve.
Makayla Doan’s first time over the front yard logs. The girls did such a nice job on their eventing dressage test, that I rewarded them with an opportunity to practice some natural jumps. Chrissy Doan and Sam Doan are pleased with the improvements. Looking forward to their first “event” in a couple weeks. I will post Lucy’s video too.
