- The Arabian horses of Poland have played a major role throughout the history of the breed and their influence is seen in the horses we enjoy today. One of the most colorful characters among Arabian horse breeders in Poland and throughout all of Europe was Count Waclaw Rzewuski. ("Portrait of Wacław Rzewuski, known as the "Emir " Author: Kazimierz Żwan (1792-1858) Copy of the painting from the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland.

Born in 1785, he attended university in Vienna where he studied Arabic languages. Following the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Count Waclaw Rzewuski was entrusted with the task of purchasing Arabian horses for the Russian Czar, Alexander I, and for the King of Witenberg's Weil Stud in Germany. In 1817, Count Waclaw Rzewuski's dream of traveling to Arabia came true when he headed an expedition for the purpose of finding and purchasing the best Arabian horses possible. During the course of his travels, Count Waclaw Rzewuskikept many notes and sketches of his experiences in the desert. Later, these were published under the title," Sur Les Cheveux Orient et Provenant des Race Orientales".

These documents are preserved today at the National Library in Warsaw, Poland. Learning about your horses and where they come from creates an even deeper, more meaningful bond.
