Just wanted to let ya'll know that I have moved Centerline Training, inc. to Aldine Westfield Stables. Located just north of Houston Intercontinental Airport. We have all settled in and are starting riding again.
Thanks to all the fellow equestrians who helped in the hurricane evacuations. There were so many doing everything: Coordinators,Veterinarians, trailering, feeding ,those that walked horses through waist deep water leading frightened horses, moving and cleaning tack, and many more just small things. It's really more than Mega Thank You.

Last Saturday I happened to be in the Houston area and got to pick the brains of Karen Brown of Centerline Training. Long lining, carriage driving, and general FEI training are her forte. I have been long lining Will consistently since December--several times a week. His body has changed and become evenly muscled and I am sure that the long lining has really helped with his conditioning and attitude. Regardless, I had many more questions for her!
Here's how things shook out: 1. whip: use a buggy/driving whip that is properly balanced--lunge whips are not the answer; 2. to create a tool to get him to be more rate-able at canter, teach him how to rock back a bit first at walk, then trot, then canter via a slight counter flexion (for only a moment), then lightening and allowing him to travel straight ahead. 3. It is also permissible to teach him to take a step of turn on the haunches via a touch of the whip's tip (I believe she said on the outside haunch). Not a bad idea to use a round pen to help with teaching this. Then you can slow his canter in increments. Previously I was using circles of various sizes (when long lining). He has to have a solid understanding of the outside rein. Today, I went out and began practicing what she had explained to me. He already has improved on the zig zags in the long lines which is what Jeff Moore wanted me to work on...with straight line portions in-between (as she suggested).
I do not have a real buggy whip (yet) so I improvised with a stripped down fishing pole (no rod and reel) as it already had a nice feel to it; had an EXCELLENT comfortable cork handle on it; and is light in hand and properly weighted. My horse got it almost immediately about the touch of the tip to his outside haunch to mean turn...Karen explained that in a way it was like teaching a carriage horse to turn within the shafts...they HAVE to do mini-turns on the haunches to do ANY turns rather than the more usual bending a mounted or freely moving horse has available. At first I assisted him getting the idea of what I was after via allowing the outside long line to sort of "scoop" along the outside of his upper hind leg and gaskin and to exert a touch of pressure there in conjunction with the soft one-time tap of my fishing pole (!). Then I stopped using the outside line at all like this and only had to use the one-time touch. Normally my long lines are running through the upper turrets (as though riding) and indeed they were today as well. After about 2-3 tries with this (the outside line "pushing" on his haunch coupled with the one-time tap of the fishing pole), he "got it" and suddenly I was able to very easily have my horse make clean 90-degree corners just by touching him once on the outside haunch with a suggestion of the direction of his head and face via a soft, leading inside rein. And then, miracles of miracles, he became so nimble and responsive and light that all I had to do was almost think these things and he was manipulating his forehand wherever I so directed. It was like "wish" and BAM he was right there wherever I wanted him to go! BAM, BAM, BAM! All 1355 lbs. was like a feather in my hands. I am so excited as I can feel the potential...and we were doing this out in the open even (round pen was too wet today). Utterly marvelous. Thank you Karen Brown, you are an oracle--a true fountain of wisdom--as far as I am concerned.

In an age when many American women take their political freedoms for granted, they would do well to recall that for nearly a thousand years their mounted ancestors enjoyed neither political nor equestrian equality.
