Watch feedback Code gives Twist when they are playing. He clearly tells her “No! Too rough!” Do not be afraid to give some negative feedback to your dog. They need clear communication on what is appropriate for living in your household. This is why I do not subscribe to purely positive training. 90% of what I do is positive and very motivational. However, I do have very clear boundaries and rules.

This video documents Twist's house training struggles and my approach during her initial weeks at home. She's progressing amazingly, and I think we're ready for the next training level, starting with a bell on the back door.

Who is my little rock star? Twist! One week here and very limited training. She picked up on the automatic sit within minutes.

Just so you guys don’t think she’s lazy. 😆

Two weeks ago, I wasn't getting a puppy. I had taken the rescue pups back to my friend Darcy and was feeling the gigantic hole in our home. I was lamenting finding a small breed that would work for everything I wanted to do and was commiserating with Kelsey Wolf at Tintlet Poodles, saying she was dropping the ball on finding me a Phantom Mini. We have joked about it for years, but she knew what I wanted was a unicorn. "If only I could find a sane phantom Mini from health tested lines". Unexpectedly, Kelsey chimed in "I think I know of one". I looked at photos of the puppy and then laughed, as I told Kelsey there was no way they would place her with breeding rights. Kelsey simply said it couldn't hurt to ask.

That day, I penned a letter. Spilled out all my dreams, how I wanted a Phantom, but not just any phantom. I wasn't going to just buy a puppy for the markings. It had to be incredible quality, mentally sound, from health tested and titled parents. I spoke about my history in dogs, in Poodles, and how I loved Poodles, but couldn't do the big hair for conformation anymore, due to my personal health struggles. I sent that email and expected nothing.

A few hours later, I get a call from an unfamiliar number. Hoping beyond hope, I answered thinking "Maybe it is about that puppy". It was. Donna of Rannod Poodles is a second generation show Poodle breeder. Her son, now the third generation, bred this litter. The little phantom girl was unexpected, but she was super nice quality. Donna asked what I wanted, told me what she needed, and we agreed to both think about it. She sent me all the parents health testing, photos, and I spoke to Keith. I mean, a few hours before a puppy wasn't even on the radar.

After seeing a few videos of the phantom girl, I was sold. I put a deposit down and my daughter and I made the long drive to pick her up. We arrived home last night, tired but thrilled.

So, there ya go. I have a new brown phantom Miniature Poodle. I've got Donna and her son, Bryan, as my mentors to help me on this journey. I know little about brown Mini lines, so I have a lot to learn. They are excited to have someone showing this little girl in sports and keeping her available to possibly have pups if she makes the cut. They have trusted me with this beautiful little gal and I am in LOVE.

Meet "Twist". Fancy name is: Rannod Twist of Fate.

Standard Poodle Breeder located in North Carolina

I was ruminating on the personalities of the Standard Poodles who have impacted my life. This breed is so interesting. They have a vast array of personalities, layers upon layers. I grew up with Pointers, Labs, Boxers, and Setters, bred and raised Shiba Inu, owned one Sammy, and experienced training my parents’ smaller dogs, Poms, Paps, Maltese, and Cresteds. I’ve also owned a few sighthounds. So, I have lived or had close contact with a LOT of dog breeds, not to mention teaching obedience classes for many years. Back in the early 2000’s I spent every single day, hours a day, at the Obedience Training Center of Huntsville, plus 3 years on the North Alabama Search and Dog team. Oh, and let’s not forget the Miniatures. I’ve owned and lived with 3 Miniature girls and each one was very similar in how they reacted to the world. I could give you traits on the breed and pretty much be sure of what you were getting.

I’ve found Standard Poodles to be different. You really have no idea what they will be as adults. I think this factor makes having them as service dogs so difficult. Will your Standard grow into a Poodle who has German Shepherd tendencies? That was Merlot. Oh, he was 80% Poodle, with a healthy side of “seriously dedicated, highly protective, hyper aware of his environment, co-dependent, with deep thoughts and worry”. Locket, I call her my Poodle Lab. She has deep ‘retriever’ tendencies, far more than your average Poodle. Eats toys and other soft items, picks up anything new in her path of travel, does what she is told with 100% of her abilities and doesn’t over think things, lives for water. She’s still very Poodle in how she walks, moves, behaves in general, but a big layer is “I’ve played so hard I have ripped my foot open, but who cares I’ll bleed everywhere, it’s fine”. Weekly. I’m not joking. I called Major my Poodle Golden, because that dog never met a stranger, was so bomb proof, loved to just float around in water, carried things, sweet as pie, calm and beautiful. Heart of Gold. Sadie was my Poodle sighthound. Sensitive to everything, dislike the ruckus of our barking Poodle home, wasn’t the brightest dog on the planet, but at the same time never did anything wrong. She retired to a family who would gently ask her politely to do things and shined. Deep sighthound tendencies. Anyway, just something bouncing around in my brain and wanted to share. Does anyone see traits in their Standard which you wouldn’t think a Poodle should have?

A friend posted this and it struck home. Recently, we had one of the Cody x Mabel pups come stay with us for a month, while her owners were out of town. They opted for 'board and train' and even if they had not, I would have done some things to make her function within our home. In any case, for the first few days with a new dog in our home, I feel like a huge nag. So many "Ahh" and "No!"s. No, you are not bolting out the door, counter surfing, jumping on us, pulling on the leash. Correction after correction. Do you know what happens? The dogs always, ALWAYS get it. They see the rules, they understand under no circumstances will I allow those rules to be broken, and they start behaving. The light bulb goes off and they get it. Sure, we are all frustrated at first, but quickly, life turns to rainbows and butterflies, because I was firm, but fair right from the start. The owner had issues with leash reactivity. Due to the soft nature of this dog, I wanted her totally comfortable with me and my style of training. I had worked with her at home on sharping her obedience skills, so when I took her out to Home Depot, Tractor Supply, and Rural King, I actually didn't see a single instant of reactivity. Why? Because that dog understood, deep in her core, I had total control of what we were doing. She lacked confidence and my consistent training and communication let her understand how to act. She did alarm bark at a man once, but I told her NO, popped the leash and we moved on. That was it. She was like "Oh, wow. I'm not supposed to do that? Never knew!" She was fine after that. Her tail was up. She was happy heeling and working her obedience with pretty low stress levels. I watched for signs of stress and it was low.

Anyway, I don't want to be the bad guy. I don't think I am. But at the same time, someone has to give these dogs clear direction, especially the ones who are less confident. If you have an obnoxiously friendly dog, it wouldn't take me 5 minutes to get that dog in hand. If you have a fearful dog with layers of reactivity that 'look' like confidence, that is the tricky point. Those dogs need a confidence owner / handler more than any other. They need direction and feedback. That feedback should match the dog's personality. It should be clear enough for them to understand, but should absolutely not create fear. You guys know I teach new things using treats, toys, and even attention / love. But I am also not afraid to tell my dogs no.

I had a personal message from Jazz's mom last night. Jazz went in for a cyst removal yesterday, and they pulled blood work on her prior to anesthesia and found extremely high liver enzymes. So, they took a chest X-ray and found cancer. Claudia is devastated. Jazz is the best girl. For those of you who do not know, Jazz whelped two beautiful litters for us. Back in late 2018, Claudia called to tell me she was pregnant and really needed another dog to burn some energy on Tina, one of the puppies she bought from us out of Libby. Tina is high drive and Claudia's energy was being sucked out by pregnancy. I had been toying with the idea of retiring Jazz. We had a 3 month camping trip planned for summer 2019 in a small travel trailer, so I knew I needed to decrease my dog population. Jazz is a special girl. I loved her so much, so placing her was not easy or taken lightly. However, I knew this was probably the best choice for everyone. It would help Claudia. It would help Tina. And most of all, I think Jazz would love every aspect of their home. We decided to do a trial run, as Claudia had two senior Yorkies and I was worried about how Jazz would act with terriers. I shouldn't have worried. Several months later, Claudia brought the dogs for a weekend visit, so I could groom Tina and see how Jazz was doing. When Claudia came to pick up the dogs, Jazz was BUSTING to leave and go with her. That was the point I knew Jazz loved them and was totally happy. Please keep Claudia in your prayers as she struggles with the next few months. Jazz is her heart dog and if you have ever had one of those in your life, you know this is going to be a rough time.

I've included only photos Claudia has taken in this post, to honor her and Jazz's second life as baby raiser. She adored her human child and took her job seriously. Hug your pups. Time slips by so quickly.

"Well, we received sad news today. Jazz has cancer. Her prognosis is not good, so for now we go day by day. She is not suffering or in any type of distress, but if that changes we will be there to help her cross the rainbow bridge to be with Shelby & Zoe. I am devastated by this news, and can’t believe our girls end is near. She will be 13 in April. 🌈🐾🐩
She has been and continues to be such a huge part of our lives. "
