I wanted to share a product one of our very own Anutta Poodle owners has developed. Courtney Sanderson supported my Poodles for decades and asked if I could order one of these pouches to test out. It arrived a few days ago and I will be making an Amazon review, because I LOVE IT! So many useful features in a reasonable size. The removable treat pouch that is magnetic closure is genius. You can pop it out and put it in the refrigerator and when it is dirty, you can wash just the treat pouch. It pops closed, so when you are bending over you don't dump out treats. There is room next to the treats for small toys / squeakers, clickers. There is a front zipper for keys and other small items. It has a clip for the keys, so you won't lose them in the middle of the training field. It has a p**p bag spot and then a little loop cinch to hang used p**p bags on. Also, a couple loops you can put clips to hang more items like collapsable water dishes or more toys. Or even clip your leash to it. Lots of options. Very well thought out. I ordered one for Kenzie, but I think I will get a second to replace my old clam shell that is getting worn and gross. This holds so much more than my old one, but still in a similar size. I love it! Oh, and it's comfortable to wear. Great belt design and easy size adjustment.

Jack is the black Standard Poodle they kept from the Cody and Mabel litter, and I love that he is the namesake for their product.

Grimm cuteness. Working baby recalls with a front.

Because I am teaching Kenzie how to raise a puppy the right way, I will try to do some short videos of what we are doing and why. I'm already explaining it to her, so we might as well bring you guys along for the ride.

Things we have already implemented.

1. Meals are training opportunities. When you have a seriously food driven breed, use it to your advantage. Currently, we are working on learning her name, to come to her name, to stand or sit with eye contact. Because Kenzie has shown interest in conformation showing, I will encourage her to reward a nice, stacked stand over a sit. But right now, calm eye contact is the most important thing.

2. Forced down time. One of the most overlooked aspects of dog mental health is napping. Puppies need a lot of sleep. The younger they are, the more sleep they need. We give her time to play with us and the other dogs. She has time for learning new things and chewing on bones. But most importantly, she has time to nap. We have a crate and two play pens for napping. She spends a lot of time on those pens and already is really good about dropping down for a nap within a minute or two of being put in the pen.

3. Tethering her to Kenzie while she works on her schoolwork in her room gives the puppy some people time but limited to help with manners and housetraining. She frequently ends up in Kenzie's lap, but I told her not to do it all the time. She needs to be able to lay at her feet and calmly chew a bone or play with a toy alone and not fight her leash.

4. Four on the floor. Many people allow smaller dogs to jump up on them when excited. I do not subscribe to this idea, and we will require all dogs, no matter how adorable, to keep their bodies to themselves. No opening pen doors if feet are on the wire. No attention to dogs who jump up.

5. Frequent potty breaks without the other dogs. It is hard for a puppy to focus on doing their business when distractions are around, so we run her outside for potty breaks alone and often. So far, she is doing amazing. Grimm only woke Kenzie up once last night for a p*e break.

Her breeder posted that this puppy was especially bright and extremely handler focused. These two things are going to make training little Grimmy a delight. Kenzie is over the moon, and we are having a blast with the little Fairy Tail.

Look what has arrived at Anutta! My daughter has dreamed of having a Beagle for a decade. I put her off until River died, then put it off so I could enjoy some time with Code and Lock. With Locket’s health doing great and my puppy, Twist coming along nicely, I decided if she was going to get a dog and have it trained up before college, it should be now. So, here is my daughter’s first competition dog. Meet Grimm! Female show quality Beagle girl from South Beagles in TN. She will be registered as South’s Fairy Tail. Pun intended. 🤣. Her sire was the number 3 Beagle in the country last year. Photos of dad and mom at the end.

I’ve never trained my own scent hound. This is going to be a learning experience for my daughter and myself. Spitz breeds? Multiple. Herding breeds? A couple. Sporting and Non Sporting? Yep. Sighthounds? Two with great results. I’ve even owned and trained working dogs and terriers. Never a scent hound. I’ll try to post updates on her training.

Hey Anutta Poodle Family. One of Jazz's pups who is 7 years old will limp on a front leg when he wakes up from a nap. Anyone notice anything similar in their Jazz pups? He has visited Auburn and they ruled out neurological. He is getting a CT today. The vet at Auburn asked of any siblings were showing similar signs. Let me know.

I had some amazing results from Twist's DNA testing. For those who do not know, my last Miniature Poodle had a genetic mutation which puts a dog at risk for degenerative disc disease. Back in early 2020, Emma got up from sleeping and simply couldn't use her rear. There was no trauma, nothing we could pinpoint to the problem. We rushed her to the emergency vet, only to confirm my worst fears. A disc in her spine had crumbled and she would be paralyzed without surgery. Our quick actions and ability to afford the surgery saved Emma. I retired her to a great home here in Huntsville with no stairs, big dogs, or jumping after her full recovery. It still feels like a miracle she made it. Emma will always be at risk, simply due to her genetics. Well, my biggest fear with getting another Miniature Poodle was invertebrate disc disease (IVDD). There is a DNA test, but many breeders either do not know about it or do not really see it often enough to care to shape their programs around removing this gene. Twist had a chance of being clear. Her breeder tested the pups they wanted to keep, but because Twist was a phantom and they were not going to keep her, she was not tested. I sat on getting the test done for a while, but as she grew, I knew I needed to know. If a dog has two copies of the gene, as Emma does, their risk is high. With one copy, the risk is reduced but not gone. Zero copies of the gene, there is no chance of IVDD. I won the lottery. Twist is clear.

Yesterday, I attended our first private lesson with a world championship agility instructor. I've decided with the kids essentially independent; I can tackle this with my little live wire. The class was incredible. I learned more from that one hour than I ever expected. It is completely different, and Twist was in heaven. I am so thrilled to have both the opportunity to take these classes and a dog who isn't going to break down from the training.

Moved up to group impluse training with Twist. This adds a different layer. I do not use these often, because they are so tiny for the Standards. It is way more useful for the mini. Cody and Locket dislike downing on them, so I generally don’t force the issue.

I know of several adult rescued Standard Poodles looking for great homes. Message me for information. Also mulling over the idea of letting Locket move to a retirement situation. I'm not sold on the idea, but if the right person walked through the door, I would consider it. My joints struggle with her grooming and it will only get worse as the years go on. Locket is a great dog with impeccable house manners and obviously well trained. She is almost 5 years old. Sweet as pie, not dominate but not a push over. Great dog manners and safe with all dog sizes. Cat safe. Message me for information.

Watch feedback Code gives Twist when they are playing. He clearly tells her “No! Too rough!” Do not be afraid to give some negative feedback to your dog. They need clear communication on what is appropriate for living in your household. This is why I do not subscribe to purely positive training. 90% of what I do is positive and very motivational. However, I do have very clear boundaries and rules.

This video documents Twist's house training struggles and my approach during her initial weeks at home. She's progressing amazingly, and I think we're ready for the next training level, starting with a bell on the back door.

Who is my little rock star? Twist! One week here and very limited training. She picked up on the automatic sit within minutes.

Just so you guys don’t think she’s lazy. 😆
