I was ruminating on the personalities of the Standard Poodles who have impacted my life. This breed is so interesting. They have a vast array of personalities, layers upon layers. I grew up with Pointers, Labs, Boxers, and Setters, bred and raised Shiba Inu, owned one Sammy, and experienced training my parents’ smaller dogs, Poms, Paps, Maltese, and Cresteds. I’ve also owned a few sighthounds. So, I have lived or had close contact with a LOT of dog breeds, not to mention teaching obedience classes for many years. Back in the early 2000’s I spent every single day, hours a day, at the Obedience Training Center of Huntsville, plus 3 years on the North Alabama Search and Dog team. Oh, and let’s not forget the Miniatures. I’ve owned and lived with 3 Miniature girls and each one was very similar in how they reacted to the world. I could give you traits on the breed and pretty much be sure of what you were getting.
I’ve found Standard Poodles to be different. You really have no idea what they will be as adults. I think this factor makes having them as service dogs so difficult. Will your Standard grow into a Poodle who has German Shepherd tendencies? That was Merlot. Oh, he was 80% Poodle, with a healthy side of “seriously dedicated, highly protective, hyper aware of his environment, co-dependent, with deep thoughts and worry”. Locket, I call her my Poodle Lab. She has deep ‘retriever’ tendencies, far more than your average Poodle. Eats toys and other soft items, picks up anything new in her path of travel, does what she is told with 100% of her abilities and doesn’t over think things, lives for water. She’s still very Poodle in how she walks, moves, behaves in general, but a big layer is “I’ve played so hard I have ripped my foot open, but who cares I’ll bleed everywhere, it’s fine”. Weekly. I’m not joking. I called Major my Poodle Golden, because that dog never met a stranger, was so bomb proof, loved to just float around in water, carried things, sweet as pie, calm and beautiful. Heart of Gold. Sadie was my Poodle sighthound. Sensitive to everything, dislike the ruckus of our barking Poodle home, wasn’t the brightest dog on the planet, but at the same time never did anything wrong. She retired to a family who would gently ask her politely to do things and shined. Deep sighthound tendencies. Anyway, just something bouncing around in my brain and wanted to share. Does anyone see traits in their Standard which you wouldn’t think a Poodle should have?
