🐾 Need assistance caring for your pet? 🐾

Indy CARES is a shelter diversion programs who works to lower the intake numbers at Indianapolis Animal Care Services. Their mission is to empower Indianapolis pet owners to responsibly care for their companion animals by connecting individuals with community resources, education, and support. They offer everything from subsidized medical care and free behavior modification consulting to pet deposit assistance, supplies, and food.

Indy CARES relies on community support and donations to continue to do what they do. Every penny donated to their organization helps keep pets with the families who love them. Right now on their page they have fundraisers for animals they are helping stay with their family and out of the shelter.

They even have their own Bonfire store, https://www.bonfire.com/store/indy-cares-store/
Can't donate? Share! Tell your friends about them and share their stories.
They can't do it without you. ❤

4th of July celebrations are coming soon! Take action NOW to prevent your pet from being lost.

Statistics show that more dogs are lost over the 4th of July holiday than any other time of the year. Public and neighborhood fireworks displays, open doors and distractions at family gatherings are common reasons for a pet’s disappearance.

*This week is expected to be HOT! Make sure you are taking care of your furry family.*

Did you know, that pets are just as likely if not more likely to get heatstroke as their humans?

Dogs specifically are more likely because they cannot sweat, tell us they are too hot and want don't want to stop playing.

Take care of them by making sure they have access to water and are inside in the AC with you.

It's 85 degrees outside. People like to leave their dogs in the car while they run into the store for just a "minute". If we get to your car before you come back out, the ticket is $260. We have a city ordinance that states:

"Further, it shall be unlawful to:
(3)Leave an animal enclosed within a vehicle, or the bed of a parked truck, in ambient temperature which exceeds 79 degrees Fahrenheit unless said animal is enclosed inside the vehicle with the air conditioning turned on." under Sec 6-9.

Please leave your pets at home. The inside of a car heats up very quickly.

If you witness this happening Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm, call 405-372-0334.

If it is after hours or the weekend, call 405-372-4171 immediately.

ONE mosquito bite started this. ONE. The damage in this case is too much and can't be fixed. Monthly heartworm prevention is necessary 12 months a year. It takes one infected mosquito bite to cause this. It can happen inside your house or on a 5 minute potty break. Monthly prevention is the only way to stop this from happening!!
It’s a $10-$12 monthly treatment.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR PETS ON MONTHLY PREVENTION

Dear Mom and Dad" (dogs point of view)
Let me stay home. It's not nice for me to walk and run next to you. But because I am a loyal dog, I often go beyond my limits. So I walk and run beside you, standing still if I have to. And feel my paws burn.
I'm looking at you for a moment, but you do not understand. Because in a little over 5 minutes we're at the cool puddle, right? But those little 5 minutes can be fatal to me. Because I sweat through my paws, and in this heat I just can not get rid of the sweat. My whole body is boiling, but I keep going .....
And then I end up on the tarmac. In the heat and in the sun. With my tongue out of my mouth and my eyes flashing in the sun. My paws are burning, my tongue is dry and my head is pounding in the heat that my body cannot get rid of ...
Instead, let me stay at home where I can enjoy the sun, with a large bowl of water, somewhere in the shade. And best of all like in a cool area with grass.
Love
Your dog

SO JUST HOW LONG DO YOUR PET’S SHOTS LAST?

Definitely longer than a year!

According to the top pet immunologist (aka vaccine expert) in the world, Dr. Ronald Schultz, Ph.D. – “ Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions.”

What the heck are adverse reactions (or side effects)?

Well according to the other rock star pet immunologist Dr. Jean Dodds:

“Side effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dog’s life (Dodd, 2001).

Severe and fatal adverse reactions include:

•Susceptibility to infections.

•Neurological disorders and encephalitis.

•Aberrant behavior, including unprovoked aggression.

•Vaccines are linked to seizures. Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and, presumably, other vaccines have been linked with poly neuropathy, a nerve disease that involves inflammation of several nerves. (Dodds,2001)”

SO HOW LONG EXACTLY DOES YOUR PET’S VACCINE LAST?

According to the recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), (basically the dudes who set the standards for the vets): “Among healthy dogs, all commercially available [core] vaccines are expected to induce a sustained protective immune response lasting at least 5 yr. thereafter”

Here’s the breakdown of the core vaccines from Dr. Ronald Schultz:

Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines:

Distemper- 7 years by challenge
Parvovirus – 7 years by challenge
Adenovirus – 7 years by challenge
Canine rabies – 3 years by challenge

The moral of the story here, if you have no idea when your pet is due or has been vaccinated, then just run a titer test and this will confirm if you are due, rather than over-vaccinate your poor pet, setting the stage for future problems!

What’s a titer test?

A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your pet’s blood. Basically, it’s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet.

It’s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination.

Vaccinating your pet is super important so don’t lose the overall message here: VACCINATE, JUST DON’T OVER-VACCINATE!

According to Dr. Dodds:

“Vaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, and has saved more animals' lives than any other medical advance.”

Pet Guardians Origin story

I started Pet Guardians 25 years ago when very few people had even heard of a pet sitting service. My degree in animal science, my work in a vet emergency hospital and head keeper at a zoo means that I have the skills and knowledge to handle any situation that may occur. All animals large or small, winged or scaled, domestic or exotic are welcomed at Pet Guardians.

It began as a way to earn some extra money. I have always loved working with animals but found myself working in laboratories, getting further and further from animal care. When the opportunity to walk friends dogs presented itself I grabbed it. It was fun and never boring. out of this came the idea for a business.

I’ve had a lot of adventures. The pets and their families I’ve met over the years has been a joy. Now however, I find that its time to move on:
