World Mosquito Day may sound strange to some, but mosquitos can carry a variety of different diseases. Mosquitos affect not only us, but can affect our pets as well. One large way that mosquitos affect our pets is that they carry and spread Heartworm Disease. Since it can spread so easily, it is important to have your pet on preventatives and get a heartworm test once a year. Heartworm disease can be deadly if not treated, and causes severe lung disease as well as damage to other organs in the body. Even if treated, there can be lasting effects in your pet's body long after the worms are gone.

As July is coming to a close, an integral part of The Paw Patch Place's history will be leaving us. Kyle's is a face many will recognize, and all will miss. On July 26th, we will be parting ways and she will be retiring. Kyle will be leaving us shortly after her 18th anniversary with our clinic, and even after so long, it feels far too soon. Kyle is always ready to tell a funny story or joke around with her colleagues, but is also more than willing to listen when you are upset. She is welcoming to everyone she meets and always has a story to tell. We truly will miss all the time we get to spend with her and it definitely won't be the same. We hope her retirement is filled with even more fun moments and love, as well as the relaxation she so deserves.

Please feel free to stop by or call before the 26th if you would like to say goodbye to Kyle. We would also love to hear any stories you have from during the time she has been here.

Today is a day for the itty bitty felines in our lives! Whether we choose them or they choose us, kittens have the best way of brightening any day. On this year's Kitten Day, we would love to see any pictures of the cats, both kitten and adult, that hold a special place in your heart. (If you have pictures of them as kittens as well as adults, we always enjoy a good glow-up!)

While your pets may not be able to partake in National Freezer Pop Day, there are dog-safe and cat-safe alternatives to this tasty treat! If you have Churu treats, or similar snacks at home for your cat, try freezing those to replicate a cat-safe popsicle! There are similar treats for dogs, but you could even spread out some canned food and put treats in that to freeze for your canine pals!

💾 Register their microchip.
🚪 Keep them inside and secure exits.
🎶 Play calming music.
📦 Create a safe space where they can hide.
🏡 Stay home with them.

We heard from the owner that the tortoise has been spotted around 52nd, Carrollton Ave, and Guilford Ave! If you are living in this area please keep an eye out! And as a reminder, Hiero is a tortoise, not a turtle, and will not need to go into water!

One of our clients is missing their tortoise. If you happen to find him, please feel free to call the number on this image, or contact us directly.

Hiero is a Russian Tortoise. He’s around 15 years old and is roughly the size of a cheeseburger. He is likely burrowing during the heat of the day and coming out to hunt for dandelions and clover during the cooler morning and evenings. He got out of his outdoor enclosure on Friday afternoon and is probably somewhere within a mile of the 54th st and Monon corridor.

For the love of toe beans, please limit your time outside! With temperatures rising, please remember it only takes 60 seconds for the hot ground to damage your pets' paws. As a good rule of thumb, if it is too hot for your own bare feet, it is too hot for theirs- and this includes grass!
