Bronwen's Art & Stuff

Bronwen's Art & Stuff I'm nerdy, and I like it. Sometimes I make stuff. I sell some of it in my Etsy shop. Inclusive feminist af. Now occasionally featuring cats!

I've always loved to make things, especially for other people. Over the years, the amount of ideas I have for things to make has grown much larger than the amount of friends and relatives I have to make them for. With this shop, I hope that means I can make some wonderful things for the wonderful people out in the world, too! My spare bedroom has become my studio space where the creativity happens

. I went to school for graphic design, but I love to do much more than just that. I especially love watercolors, but I also sew and draw and create things with paper and really anything that inspires me. I love to experiment with techniques and materials, and sometimes the most satisfying thing is knowing you made something old into something new again. Here, you will find updates about what I'm up to, and more often updates about my Etsy shop. I'm just starting out, but I hope you'll stick around and watch me grow!

Happy !
I attempted to do some mermaid makeup, but the pinks and greens and golds I chose don't pick up on camera very well. It's cute and quirky but kinda doesn't read mermaid. Oh well, at least it was fun practice ♡

Another old sketchbook drawing done at the same time as my last post. I decided to actually show what I started with six years ago to compare. It was rough, but I've come a long way. Feet are so hard in perspective!

Another old sketchbook find that I decided to use for perspective practice. The feet were the worst of it, but they look pretty decent now.

Today's drawing was inspired by a prompt I found early in the month from http://artprompts.org: Medusa tries a new hairstyle (or something like that). I very quickly imagined this pun on teasing, and I'm so excited to finally draw it!

[Image: A comic panel with text at the top that says 'Medusa teases her hair.' The drawing below is of Medusa pointing and looking up at her hair (which is made up of very sad snakes) and a speech bubble that says 'How do you measure a snake? In inches, they don't have feet!']

Turns out I saved the post I made about the dream that inspired yesterday's Inktober prompt (see below)! I forgot about the C buttons from the N64 controller being on the ocarina, and it made me laugh.

"I had a pretty hilarious dream last night (for once), too. I was at Hogwarts, but Hogwarts was a temple in Hyrule. There were four doors, one for each House, but there was an ocarina song written on each door. I was in charge of playing the songs to open the door for each House, because there was a mission for each House to complete behind each one. When I got to the Slytherin door, I couldn't see the song anymore, so I tried to play it from memory but I couldn't get it quite right. Then the Head of Slytherin (who was Voldemort, and no one questioned this) came over and got angry about the delay. He said we should duel, so I pulled out my Hylian sheild and the master sword and he shot me with an energy blast, kamehameha style. I got thrown back against a wall, but when the blast stopped, I rushed around behind him and stabbed him in his secret eye on his back (that SO many Zelda bosses have), then picked up the heart container after he died. Oh, and the ocarina had yellow c button arrows like on a N64 controller. I didn't actually play it."

Another crossover I found in my sketchbook from long, long ago! This one I got discouraged about because I couldn't get the perspective right on this pose, so that was my main focus on reworking it. I threw on some color because the concept doesn't read very strongly without it.
This was actually based on a hilarious dream I had! It involved playing songs on an ocarina in order to open doors to the different Hogwarts houses, then fighting Voldemort by hitting the classic Zelda boss eye on his back.

[Image: Drawing of Voldemort with a big, bright orange/yellow eye on his back, looking over his shoulder with an angry expression and a raised clenched fist. The background is a faded pink oval surrounded by dark blue.]

Inktober really got away from me last week, but I'm getting back into it now!
This was a sketch I started foreverrrrr ago and got discouraged because it wasn't as good as I was picturing it in my head. I flipped past it in my sketchbook and decided to stick it out. Inktober's all about practice anyhow, right?
So, this was a crossover idea between the zelda game Spirit Tracks and the Full Metal Alchemist anime. The parts when Zelda's spirit inhabits the armor always gave me a FMA vibe.

I've built off this drawing for Inktober quite a few times, but it's been an enjoyable process so I'm ok with that.

Backgrounds are tough, so I practiced with something simple. I tried some trees but wasn't super happy with anything I came up with. That's what all that empty linework is all about. I might come back to this some more later for practice because it's so dang cute, but I'm moving on tomorrow. Promise!

The alternate nap spot I offered up to appease my cat overlord after having to get up from cuddle time has been accepted. Don't be fooled by her adorable countenance. She weilds great powers of manipulation.

Yesterday for Inktober, I worked a while on digitally painting the coffee sketch from earlier this week, but time got away from me and I didn't get anything new 'finished' that was worth posting. I'm still happy with myself for continuing my art every day streak, so enjoy this cat photo until tomorrow's Inktober entry ♡

I definitely need to be more patient with watercolors. I didn't wait long enough between sections (despite my better judgment) and kept having to go over areas to try to keep the textures smooth after parts blurred together. I'm happy with this for what it is overall, though. I also finally tried out a water brush pen thing I've had for a while and now I want all the sizes. Holy cow, it was so nice to use!

Four days of drawing in a row is some kind of record for me, maybe! Not focusing on realistic proportions seems to be good for me. This was a lot of fun to do, and I was surprised how easily it came together when I loosen up my drawing style. Perfectionism is easier to manage when the goal is to not be perfect! This prompt was 'coffee thermos' from http://artprompts.org.

I had fun with this one experimenting on this knitting detail. The fuzzy black kitten started as a striped kitten, but I need more practice with ink on not fussing with lines until it just becomes a busy mess. I kinda like how it ended up better in the end, though! The prompt I used was cozy sweater, another one from the object category at http://artprompts.org.

Welp, it didn't take long to start struggling with that consistency thing! I spent my drawing time yesterday doing that artist thing where you have a lot of ideas but not enough skill yet to do them justice so you feel overwhelmed and discouraged. It's easy to think big and want to skip ahead to big things, but when it comes to drawing I need to get comfortable again in smaller places. So after doing a drawing that I realized I'd rather save to do in another medium, I was at a loss. I saw an official Inktober prompt list where the second day was 'noisy' and my brain was the noisiest thing I could think of. A ball of perfectionism, frustration and all of the meh. This little doodle is the result of my resolve to keep fighting perfectionism and to be authentic in that work. It's not going to be pretty ♡

[Image: A photo of an open sketchbook, pencil, marker and eraser. Drawing on the sketchbook is a face with bangs, wearing glasses, with eyes closed, cut off under the eyes at the bottom with a think bubble taking up most of the page filled with messy doodles.]

Hello, internet! Woah. It's been a minute since my last post, I know. To get reacquainted with you all I'm going to give Inktober a try! Consistency is one of my long term goals, and I clearly need the practice, haha!
I've been excited to try this cute idea generator someone shared with me ages ago, http://artprompts.org. It's simple and easy to use, so far. This first Inktober drawing was created with a prompt from the object category: glass vase with flowers. I'm feeling pret-ty rusty drawing on paper and using ink, but it's fun!

It's only Wednesday after a long weekend and why is it not Friday yet? How are short weeks so long sometimes?!

This is my view as I lay on the couch, excited the long weekend is practically here! He has the tiniest tongue barely sticking out and all of the rumbles (that's what we call purrs because his are so loud and, well, rumbly!). Welp. I blew through Super Metroid in like a week. Only got 81% of the collectibles, so of course I'm going to dive right back in and try again. I'm all in, folks. This is like right under Zelda levels of franchise love (which if you know me, that's high praise). So, so good.

I've been playing Super Metroid (on wii virtual console) for the first time this week. I've played a bit of Metroid/Metroid II and fell in love with the feel of it, but it's so easy for me to get infuriatingly frustrated and lost without a map. So, this game has sucked me in fast. Uncovering the map is so satisfying!

What you're witnessing here is a cat miracle. In our house this chair is known as Clawshot's Chair. He loves this thing. He's also known for kicking Bombchu out of a nap spot if he decides he'd like it to himself. So when I came in the room to find this in The Chair, I basically melted into a cat lady puddle ♡

I was at my mom's yesterday and found this photo from high school I haven't seen in a long time. It was picture retake day and I was half-assing it pretty hard. I distinctly remember that I was wearing pajama pants in this pic, and I took this button down off after and threw on a hoodie! 😂

[Image: A school photo from the chest up of me (a girl with long, wavy, reddish blond hair parted down the center; wearing a red striped collared button down shirt) from my junior year of high school.]
