While fireworks and 4th of July festivities are loads of fun for us, they're not so fun for our pets- they can be pretty scary for our four-legged family members! Here are a few tips to help keep your pets safe and sound this Independence Day:
๐ Make sure your pets wear collars and ID tags with current information. If they're microchipped, ensure your contact information is updated with the microchip registry. The loud noises and bright, flashing lights from fireworks can be disorienting for pets, and they may bolt in their confusion. Current contact information where it counts can reunite you and your pet as soon as possible if they get lost.
๐ญ๐ We know your pets are your family, and you want to include them in all the festivities. However, remember that many BBQ foods, including onions, garlic, avocado, chocolate, salt, and cooked bones, are harmful and even toxic to pets. To keep your pet happy and healthy, stick to pet-safe treats and keep all alcoholic beverages out of your pet's reach!
๐ Leave your pets at home and keep them inside during fireworks displays, whether it's the city show at Jackson Junior High School or just your friends and neighbors on your street. Make a safe, quiet space for them in your house, and consider using a fan, white noise machine, or soothing music to help soften the loud booms and popping sounds they'll hear.
๐ After the festivities, ensure all firework debris, food scraps, and decorations are properly disposed of or put away. You're probably not interested in BBQ skewers, used fireworks, paper plates, and disposable silverware, but your pet might think those are tasty treats or fun new chew toys. Help prevent an upset stomach or an intestinal blockage by thoroughly cleaning up any potential pet hazards before letting your pet play in the yard unattended.
We will be closed tomorrow and Friday, but if anything happens and you need immediate medical attention for your pet while we're away, call Insight Veterinary Wellness Center at 916-618-4700.

According to this post, household pets are welcome at the cooling centers! Thank you Amador County Sheriff's Office and Amador County Animal Response Team (ACART) for helping to keep us all cool this week!
Excessive Heat Warning!
Good morning, Amador County
Due to the Excessive Heat Warning the National Weather Service has issued, a Cooling Center will be opened from Wednesday, July 3rd through Sunday, July 7th. (Additional days may be added if the heat event continues). This Cooling Center will be at the Health and Human Services building located at 10877 Conductor Blvd, Sutter Creek, and will be open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. Amador County Social Services staff will be on-site to provide water and snacks donated by the American Red Cross.
Youโre also invited to bring your household pet to this Cooling Center, and the Amador County Animal Response Team (ACART) will be on-site to help you kennel your furry friend while you cool off. Kennels will be on-site and water will also be provided for your pet.
Plymouth and Ione will also have their own Cooling Centers. Plymouthโs will be at City Hall (9426 Main Street) from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm from Wednesday through Friday, and Ioneโs will be at the Ione Fire Department, Station 2, located at 600 Preston Avenue from 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm from today through Sunday. Also, you can always cool off at the Jackson Library and catch up on your reading.
For more information on how to beat the heat and stay safe during extreme heat events, click here.
It's going to be scorching hot this week! Help your pet beat the heat by NEVER leaving them in a hot car and ensuring they always have access to fresh water and a cool place to escape the sun. Consider walking your dog early in the morning or after sunset when the asphalt and sidewalks are cooler. Remember, heat stroke in pets can be fatal. If you're hot, they're hot!
As a reminder, we will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week for Independence Day. If your pet needs medications before the holiday weekend, don't wait until this last minute to get your refills! Call us today at 209-223-3504.

Our JCVC elves have been busy this week squirreling away gifts for local shelter pets! There are 19 days left until Christmas, so there's still plenty of time to add to the pile. We'd love to gift even more dog and cat toys, beds, treats, and food. If you're feeling generous this holiday season, ask one of our lovely receptionists how to make sure your gift makes its way to an adoptable pet in need!
12/01/2023
It's TIIIIIME!! ๐๐ Time for our annual Wish Tree program, that is! If you want to help spread holiday cheer to animals in need, stop by and help us fulfill the wishes of local shelter pets. Take a "wish" from the Christmas tree in our lobby, place your donated items under the tree, and leave an angel on the tree in memory of a loved one, or just a special holiday message. All donations will be distributed to Amador County Animal Control and Adoption Center, A-PAL Humane Society, and Interfaith Food Bank of Amador County. Every donation is greatly appreciated, but unopened/unused items are preferred whenever possible.

Please call in refills of prescriptions you know you'll need before Thursday as soon as possible--don't wait until the very last minute! Itโs spooky season! ๐ป Lucy would like to remind everyone of some of the dangers to our pets brought by Halloween.
For the sake of your pets, keep them away from:
๐ฌ Candy - It might include dangerous ingredients, like chocolate or xylitol. It is especially dangerous if consumed in quantity.
๐ Costumes - Small bits, like buttons or decorations, can be chewed off and become choking hazards.
๐ฏ๏ธ Candles - Jack oโ Lanterns and other open flames can burn your pet, or be knocked over and become a fire hazard.
โญ Glow sticks - Glow jewelry can be chewed on and spill its toxic contents.
๐ธ๏ธ Decor - Temporary decorations, like fake spider webs, can be eaten and cause choking or intestinal blockages. Electrical cords should be kept out of reach or securely taped down.
๐ Snack bags - Pets can get their head stuck inside, and suffocate. Cut up plastic bags before disposing of them.
By being mindful of these seasonal dangers, you can keep your pet happy and safe!

Misty came in today to show off her stylish shoes & to remind everyone about the significant difference between the temperature in the air versus the temperature on the ground. Misty's friendly owner let us know he was thinking ahead to make sure she was protected from this heat & we love this! Check out that traction!

We will be closed for Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th, and have minimal staff on Monday, July 3rd. If you know your pet needs calming medication to help them cope with the loud noises and flashing lights from local fireworks displays, please call us before 2:00 pm tomorrow to ensure we have enough time to get your request to a doctor for approval.
Now is also an excellent time to check that your pet's microchip information is up to date, and if your dog has a collar tag with your contact info on it, make sure they're wearing it! Our furry friends don't usually share our enthusiasm for fireworks and may get spooked and even run away in their confusion when our celebrations start. While we all hope this doesn't happen to our pets, it's always a good idea to make sure your ducks are in a row so you can be reunited as soon as possible if it does!
In case of emergency while we're closed, please call Insight Veterinary Wellness Center at 916-618-4700 or VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center at 916-362-3111. We wish you all a safe and happy Fourth of July!

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month so we thought it would be helpful to show you why your veterinarian thinks it is so important to keep your dog on heartworm prevention year-round.
Below is a map directly from the American Heartworm Society showing you the positive cases in the United States.
While it may be more prevalent in the South East, it is still found in our area & unfortunately, we do see positive tests here at JCVC.
There are different medications available to protect your pet from this disease including oral medications taken monthly (such as Heartgard) & annual injectable medications (such as ProHeart). This disease is almost 100% preventable!
Please contact us directly if you would like more information about protecting your precious family member at (209)223-3504.
