Z is for Zoonotic diseases!

A zoonotic disease is something that can be transmitted between humans and animals. One of the most known diseases is the rabies virus, but there are also other illnesses such as leptospirosis, ringworm, hookworms and toxoplasmosis. Ask your veterinarian how you can keep you and your family safe from theses diseases through prevention/vaccinations. πŸ’‰

Zoonotic disease or zoonoses are terms used to describe an infection or disease that can be transmitted from an animal to a human being.

Y is for Yeast Infection!

Yeast is a normal part of any dog/cat or even human's skin, but when there becomes an overgrowth of yeast, that's when it becomes an issue. Yeast infections typically occur in moist areas of the skin such as the ears, groin/genital areas, in between skin folds and under arms. Symptoms of a yeast infection may include bad body odor, itching/scratching, hair loss, thickened skin, and sores/flaky skin. If your pet has any of these symptoms, it would be best to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the best plan of action. 🐢🐱

X is for Xylitol Poisoning!

Xylitol is a sugar substitute usually in "sugar free" gum, toothpaste or certain peanut butter brands. Toxic doses of xylitol in dogs can cause seizures, vomiting, lethargy, hypoglycemia and even can be fatal if not treated immediately. Be sure to check the ingredients if you use peanut butter as a treat and do your best to avoid any that say they are "sugar free" because they likely use xylitol rather than natural sugars.

W is for Weight Management! βš–οΈ

One of the most common diagnoses that we make in our hospital is "overweight" or "obesity". We know it can be hard to manage your pet's weight, especially if you have more than one, but obesity can cause a variety of issues in your cat/dog's life. Remember that even 2 lbs of extra weight on a small dog or cat is equal to about 30 lbs on a grown human. Click the link for more information about weight loss and weight comparisons!

Learn tips for determining your pet's ideal weight, questions for your vet about pet obesity, how to support your pet's weight loss and potential prizes from Hill's.

V is for Vestibular Syndrome (or Vestibular Disease). πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

Vestibular disease refers to a sudden disturbance of balance typically in older pets. Symptoms of this may include nystagmus (rapid, irregular eye movement), a head tilt, disorientation and a quick onset of loss of balance. There are few causes of this (inner ear infection, head trauma, or tumors), but if no specific cause is found, it is known as an idiopathic vestibular syndrome.

If your pet ever has any of these symptoms, it is best to contact your veterinarian right away to discuss the best treatment option.

U is for Urinary Tract Infection (aka UTI) 😿

UTI's can occur in any species at any age- they can be caused by bacteria, but can also result from other underlying issues as your pet gets older. They are very uncomfortable, so if your pet is showing any signs, it is best to have them seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause symptoms in female and male dogs, but should you consult your vet or treat them with natural remedies?

T is for TICKS! 🚫

Ticks are nasty little parasites that like to feed off our furry friends. They carry diseases that can be transmitted through bites to our pets, and to us too! Lyme disease has become more common in our area, so we recommend YEAR ROUND flea/tick protection. Ticks don't go away during the winter time, and seem to actually be more common in spring/fall. The weather is unpredictable and so are these parasites. Simparica Trio, Simparica and Revolution Plus are great products to keep your pets safe. We also carry the lyme vaccine for dogs- if you haven't gotten that yet, give us a call! πŸ“ž

S is for Stomatitis!

Stomatitis is a condition where the mouth becomes inflamed. This condition is becoming more common in veterinary medicine and it is still unknown what causes chronic cases- it is suggested that it is caused by a hyperimmune response to bacterial plaque in the mouth, so we recommend yearly oral exams and cleanings. Noticeable signs of stomatitis is pain while eating, drooling and lack of appetite. If you believe your pet may have symptoms, it is best to speak to your veterinarian to discuss management options. 🦷

Q is for Queening 🐱

Queening is the term for a cat giving birth to kittens. As cute as baby kittens are, it is important to remember to have your cats spayed or neutered (especially if they go outside) to reduce the risk of overpopulation. Unfortunately, there are so many kitties without homes due to the lack of reproductive alteration in the outdoor cats. πŸˆπŸˆβ€β¬›

P is for Pancreatitis!

Pancreatitis is "inflammation of the pancreas" and is a very severe and painful condition in our pets. The main cause is eating food high in fat (ie: table scraps), but it can also be triggered by diabetes, hypothyroidism, and other underlying issues. Some signs to look out for are vomiting, pain in the abdomen, high temperature, bloody diarrhea, inappetence and lethargy. Pancreatitis is easily diagnosed with a blood test, and can be treated with IV fluids and antibiotics. πŸ’‰

O is for Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is commonly seen in older pets, (20% of dogs over the age of 7 and 90% of cats over the age of 12). It is the most common type of arthritis seen in our pets and is caused by the deterioration of the cartilage lining of the bones, causing friction, inflammation and pain. It cannot be "cured" but the pain can be managed through medications. Talk to your veterinarian if your pet is showing signs of osteoarthritis, (ie: lameness, hesitancy/inability to jump, behavior changes, poor grooming, stiffness, increased sleeping habits). Not all pets cry out in pain, so it is best to monitor behavior/activity changes to determine whether your pet may be uncomfortable.
