From our fun trip to Keller Pointe a few weeks ago. I highly recommend life jackets like this one (it has a chin float to keep muzzle confidently out of the water). Life jackets decrease the amount of effort for dogs with a double coat (older dogs or dogs new to swimming).

We will be going to the End of Summer Dog Celebration (called doggie dunk) at Keller Point pool.

Introducing your dog to a life vest walk him daily the dog life jacket on the dog after the walk and give him/ or her extra affection and food! This is the Emust brand life jacket in size “medium” , he is an average size sheltie weighing 25 pounds (he is physically fit size, more fluff than fat but not skinny).

This way by the time he goes swimming he has a positive outlook on wearing the vest, therefore calmer than otherwise when entering a new and unfamiliar pool.

Every year they allow dogs on the last day of the season. It has a beach entrance which is ideal for dogs who are new to swimming.

The ONLY way to increase confidence in shy or fearful dogs is to respect their boundaries and limitations, too much too soon or forced affection will make them feel violated and further not trust you! New adventures and positive experiences help but only if affection is not forced. The more people force the more negative associates are created or strengthened.

Trust is earned not forced or expected.. this also applies to humans! This Doodle, Lady trusts my dog but not the others, notice how she has her hip to him.

Often in the human world ruled by extroverts and more dominant but unstable people, the shy feel pressured. The dogs who are shy or introverted need more time to trust just like introverted people and sometimes decide not to trust which is also perfectly fine. As I watch dogs who are more natural than us I understand what trust is and why it’s not or should not be given out like cookies, dogs who are less dominant (like these two) should be discerning about trust even more so than dominant pack members otherwise they are highly likely to get hurt and or attacked by others in the pack (or out side the pack) who are insecure yet more dominant than them. My dog has learned to keep a “boundary” until he (not you or other dog) decides he is safe. His limitation of “trust” has allowed him to take his time using discernment as I advocate for him and he discerns his confidence has greatly increased! He is now a much more confident shy meek dog! I tell people who want to pet him “wait”, then I watch his body language, he’s prefers strangers who are small children over strangers who are adults (smart dog) he seems to understand them . If my dog is in disagreement of trust with a stranger who wants to pet him I advocate for him by not allowing the petting; some strangers act loud, wild, and or pushy) therefore he prefers personal space which I respect and advocate for.

After the dog sniffs confidently and turns his or body away from you while staying close. Dogs show trust by laying down next to you while facing away ( hip towards you).

New group for people in Keller, Fort Worth, and surrounding area who have “omega dogs”.

Dogs in the “back of the pack” sometimes called “omega dogs” tend to be less dominant, cautious, and a little timid ( or fearful). These dogs do not do well in most dog daycare or obnoxious stressful dog park situations.
