Someone somewhere mentioned something about a solar eclipse … so we are looking at options. Dr. Gregg is super proud of his pinpoint holes in foil in a box. Profed donated a pair of official eclipse glasses, and then the CAT glasses are just cute.

Today in Boone county …
Dr Gregg Barnard is attending the Indiana Equine Practitioner meeting. Industry legend, Dr. Jack Easley and veterinary dentistry resident, Dr. William Rainbow are presenting an amazing day of complicated equine dentistry cases, radiograph techniques, CT, cutting edge procedures, and what’s new!
Also began with some interesting history of the whole veterinary industry.

Dr. Gregg Barnard and nurses … (Ann Glass-Barnard, Trisha Hall, and Sarah N. Smith) are attending the Midwest Veterinary Conference in Columbus, Ohio …. Equine dystocia, and field emergencies, high risk pet anesthesia, pain management, in-house cytology, ophthalmology, dentistry, and management are a FEW of the topics.
Our guests Tracie and Wendy from the Humane Society of Noble County attended the great “Shelter Animal” lectures.

If you might remember, on December 1 (a super cold day) we posted about Shakira - weak and barely able to stand from blood loss and her severe heel bulb laceration … way more blood than Facebook would allow… but Dr. Barnard (with a small army of her family) got it sutured and later a cast was applied.
Today Dr Gregg Barnard removed the cast and it looks pretty darn good! Tho a bit pruny.

Happy case alert!
Happy cat, happy doctor, happy nurses… you get the idea….

Charlie presented to us about a week ago in extreme pain, unable to use his hind legs.

Dr. Gregg Barnard quickly made the diagnosis of a Saddle thrombus - a VERY PAINFUL, catastrophic condition, most times resulting in euthanasia due to the pain and poor prognosis.

With some aggressive treatment and pet parents who wanted to give it a “go”, he is doing surprisingly well and we received this video of Charlie playing at home!!

We were lucky to have a special assistant in today’s equine surgical procedure. While nurse anesthetist Ann suggest we intubate … the surgeons decided to mask down the patient for a smooth and quick recovery.
Patient Neigh Neigh had a serious hoof injury but 6-O Ethicon closed it nicely.
Owner / assistant was pleased with the outcome and both were able to drive the Kubota to dump manure only minutes after recovery.

We are so blessed to have staff that not only WORK HARD and love caring for our patients (and patient parents) …, but also love to PLAY together! What a great work family. Love every one of them.

Mr. Sparkles has an announcement! Tri-State is changing our "F***l" procedure for cats and dogs. The new testing will be a PCR test which looks for the actual DNA of 20 parasites and protozoa (instead of just looking for the microscopic eggs in previous testing). The reference laboratory also has veterinary pathologists to review and recommend treatment and prevention protocols.
So Merry Christmas and cheers to PARASITE CONTROL!!!

Folded laundry last night and came across this little quilt - lovingly made by one of our clients for one of Bella’s birthday parties. It was a sweet reminder of Bella (and all of our “BELLA’S BIRTHDAY BASH” events), but more so a reminder of what a clinic “family” / “community” we are lucky to have.

On the coldest day yet … Shakira came in the barn with an IMPRESSIVE heel bulb laceration. Let’s just say Facebook wouldn’t approve of the video we took Tuesday … Horses can safely loose a lot of blood to be in danger but this wound was at least a couple hours old and was still pumping and she was visibly shocky and weak.

Her family was incredibly supportive and helpful but with 25° temps (freezing fingers) and a weak and wobbly patient, Dr. Barnard’s surgery was challenging!!

So happy to change her bandage tonight and see that the bleeding is under control (😵‍💫🤞😜) and she is using it pretty well and that suture line looks pretty good!!

Our nurse Alyssa Manth … applying Phovia light therapy. Phovia is a newer therapy to reduce inflammation - helping wounds to heal more quickly.
