Many of you have called with concerns regarding the respiratory disease circulating the news lately. Please see the OVMA’s recent statement with the most up to date information in more detail. In summary, cases may have a virus component that looks similar to prolonged kennel cough or pneumonia. There is no specific vaccine for it. The bordetella, influenza and parainfluenza vaccines are recommended for dogs who may have interaction with other dogs including boarding, grooming, dog parks etc. Reduce risk of exposure by avoiding contact with unknown dogs. The veterinary community advises caution rather than worry. Please schedule an appointment if your dog develops coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge, or lethargy. https://www.oregonvma.org/news/reports-of-severe-canine-infectious-respiratory-disease-in-oregon

Thank you to those of you that were flexible with your appointment times so Dr. Bohard could go get her eye looked at. She’s on ointment 4x per day and so far she’s been fairly tolerant for medication administration. She can’t put her contacts back in until she’s all healed. We will continue to monitor and make sure she can’t rub or scratch it.

Dr Bohard, Synthia, and Kelsey spent their Saturday helping a crew of Oregon State Vet Med students and veterinarians castrate 27 wild stallions on the Warm Springs Reservation. This was an important piece of the population control program the Tribal community works diligently to maintain. All horses recovered well and are back to their normal lives.

For horses and other outside animals, limit their exercise as much as possible. Provide extra fresh water near where they eat. Water keeps the airway moist and facilitates clearing inhaled particulates. Limit dust exposure by soaking hair and/or watering down dusty paddocks.

If your horse is coughing or having difficulty breathing contact a veterinarian. Especially horses with a history of heaves or other airway problems are at a greater risk for complications.

Many places in Oregon are seeing (and smelling) wildfire smoke, which is being pushed by strong winds. Smoke, ash and dust from wildfires affects pets, birds, horses, livestock and wildlife. Pet birds are particularly susceptible to particulates in the air.

* Keep pets and pet birds indoors with the windows shut. Pet birds should remain indoors during the highest level air advisories.

* Avoid intense outdoor exercise during periods of poor air quality. Exercise pets when dust and smoke has settled.

* Limit time outdoors for pets on days designated with a red air quality alert to quick potty breaks. Air Quality Map: https://oraqi.deq.state.or.us/home/map

* Animals that have cardiovascular or respiratory disease are at increased risk during periods of poor air quality.

* Include your animals in your plans for possible evacuation: https://oregonvma.org/care-health/disaster-preparedness/disaster-preparedness-pet-owners (companion animals) and https://oregonvma.org/care-health/disaster-preparedness/disaster-preparedness-equine-large-animal-owners (equine/large animals)

If you are evacuating from the Cedar Creek Fire, here is animal evacuation information: https://www.lanecounty.org/news/cedar_creek_fire_information

Donations of hay and other supplies for large animals are being accepted at Lane Events Center.

It was all smiles at the La Pine Rodeo. We got a little rain but no animals were injured. Dr Bohard and Synthia were there in case any of the 4-legged athletes needed medical attention. Elizabeth did a great job representing us in the military flag presentation. We hope to see you all at the parade tomorrow!

If your pet gets anxious with fireworks please call us before Friday to get medications that can help ease their (and your) stress this Fourth of July. It’s also important to keep your pets inside during the holiday. Besides the heat, pets that normally stick around may run away when they become scared. Just in case, make sure their tags and microchip information is up to date. We hope everyone has a safe, happy Fourth.
