When piglets are born each piglet picks a teat to nurse on; that becomes their special teat. Hint.., First born gets the best flowing milk teat while last piglets get the further back teats( some teats may dry up causing slow growth;very important to watch for these signs to supplement if needed)

How to Start Growing Your Own Meat🐷
(Part 1 Finding the right feeder piglet)
1. Find a farm that has healthy feeder piglets. (Feeder piglets are already weaned from mother at about 6 weeks old, breed as meat pig not a show pig) Do Not buy a pot belly pig for raising meat. Good weight is 25 to 30lb
2. Look for healthy large litters to choose from.(ask questions about mother’s history of litters (1. How many successful litters?how many deaths? ) (2. Any complication with sow mother?)These questions are good when you are seeking to raise a feeder piglet to grow into a gilt (female breeding pig at 6 months maturity)
3. If you are looking for a possible female piglet to raise to breed and have her farrow piglets (future sow) look for these qualities (1. Good mothering abilities...Yorkshire/blue butt breed is known as good sow mothers ) (2. Check piglets teats to confirm there are at least 14
4. Bringing piglets home.. it’s best to pick up your feeder piglets in a medium size dog kennel with a little bit of straw hay to comfort piglets.( make sure to secure door with a tie down; don’t want accidents while transporting piglets. ( if transporting in summer bring a spray bottle of water to cool piglets)(Also note piglets do better when you buy at least two; they can grow faster, reduced stress and they are social)
5. It’s also good to ask seller to provide a day at least if not two days worth of feed the piglets have been eating it’s important to change food diet rations slowly (or piglets can get (stress) or edema disease, which can kill pigs.
6. Using isolation practices to prevent disease if piglets were purchased from separate farms or if a piglet becomes sick.
7. Using good health management practices (Providing plenty of fresh, clean water)
8. Deworming should also be a practice in healthy pigs on their arrival home
9. Piglets raised on wood floors or concrete are deprived of natural iron. It’s better to raise pigs on the earth to provide natural iron dirt.
10. Best pen for piglets should be a secure three wall hut to protect from weather; and training them to be pasture pigs either by hot wire training (look up Joel Salatin videos online)
11. Piglets love running, becoming escape artist, but can be trained to respect hot wire and always use a bucket of feed if needed to return a piglet back safely to its pen.
12. Look for good temperament and easy to manage(docile friendly pigs will be safe to raise
